View Full Version : PM9 - Feed issues with 7-round magazine

Hi all! My first post here.
I recently purchased a PM9 from Kahr via their Instructor sales program. I have 500 rounds through the pistol now, so it is well past the break-in. I've only had one issue early on with the 6-rd mag, a failure to lock the slide open when empty.
The 7-rd mag, however, is another story. Numerous nose-down jams. Some could be cleared with a simple tap-rack, but in the majority of cases, the nose of the round would get stuck under the feed ramp, jamming the pistol up. This was with 3 different brands of 115 gr FMJ ammo - Federal, WWB, and Blazer Brass.
I called Kahr, and the tech told me that gripping the gun "too tightly" could cause the 7-rd mag to tip forward in the mag well, causing this issue. I kind of doubt this explanation, as I could detect no wiggle room in the mag well at all.
I sent the 7-rd mag back, and they replaced it with a 6-rd mag - just got it so I have not been able to test it.
My question is - is this a known issue? I did a search and did find some other reports that seemed similar to mine. Kind of stinks to pay for a 6 and a 7 round mag, and to end up with two 6-rounders instead. I had planned on using the 7-rd mag as my spare.
I asked Kahr in the letter I included with the return to maybe send me another 7-rd mag in addition to the 6-rd one, in case it was just a bad mag, but they didn't do that. I'd think they would want to make a good impression with Instructors...but apparently not.:(
So, what does the collective wisdom over here say about this issue? Any idea of the root cause?
Thanks!

yup sure is, the 7 rounder give issues. MY opoinion is a short mag well and everyones grip is different, some exert more pressure on the extended grip than others and issues. arise.
You did the exact correct right thing IMO, u sent it back for a 6 rounder. You bought the gun for concealment, so you would probably only use that extended magazine for range time and possable as a backup spare if you carry a spare. I personally feel one should practice with his defense gun the way he truly intends to carry. the extended magazine gives a diufferent feel than your flush fit. IMO u did the right thing. Ur only one round less and if u you didn't think that 7 round extended magazine was the most butt ugly magazine u ever seen, then, I think you have sight problems.
You could jack around and find a 7 round mag that will work, as some send um back and just get another and it seems to work out. Why that is, I have no clue. IMO kahr PM9 owners would be much happier with a spare 6 round flush fit magazine. If one needs that extra round, then buy a cw9..
Just shoot it like you stole it, u now have dependability with the fluish fit mags.

My PM9 is perfect with the 6 round mags. Enough so I've got another one on order. It did the nosedive thing with the 7. So I tossed it. Didn't like the feel of it anyway. But, to answer your question I've seen enough yap on the subject to believe it is what you're calling a "known problem".

Kahr just exchanged 2 extended mags for me. Listen to Jocko. Resistance is futile! :)

Far be it for me to argue with someone with over 30,000 rounds through their PM9!:D
OK - so this seems to be a common complaint. What is Kahr doing about it, besides replacing the 7-rd mags with 6-rd mags? What is the cause of the issue?

IMO, anything that extends beyond the bottom of the PM frames is gonna give issues. The mag well is short in length and we all grip differently. Most don't have issue with the 7 rounder either, as kahr has proabably over 50K of the pm guns out there, so it is not pandemic but IMO it is an issue with some kand they seem willing to replace with a 6 rounder or even another 7 rounder and let the shooter try it to see if it works.
I have used my 7 rounder proabably a half dozen times at the range, and mine worked, but it is so butt ugly that I don't even take it with me to the range any more. and I am a believer that I practice the way I carry. So not a good answer 10thmtn, as if u ask kahr they say they have no issues and what issues they have are shooter issues, which is partially right, but it ain't right also..

I don't think theres a solid answer yet. Many believe and have been told that a strong grip causes that extended mag to change the angle of presentation apparently. I don't totally buy that and many 7 rounders work fine. So I don't think there's really an answer for you yet.

My 7-rounder worked fine with WWB and Federal Champion, but had lots of nose dives with Speer Lawman and Magtech. That leads me to believe that the 7-rounder is ammo sensitive. Just my pet theory...
I just didn't trust it enough to use it as a backup magazine and that's why I exchanged mine.

This can't be good. Do you find yourself making rumbling Harley sounds in your throat throughout the day. An uncontrollable urge to say Shoot it like ya stole it about a 1000 times a day. Along with an urge to go tinkle off your back deck anytime day or night?
He's tried to move in on every girl I ever been engaged to. :( I sometimes feel like such a loser. :(
Maybe I'll buy a hack hack 9 and 5 7rd mags and torture myself at the range.
Drink lots and lots of fluids (no more Jocko kool aid) and maybe we can flush that stuff out of your system. Lock the back door so you can't get to the back deck. Not good........

Bawanna, the only urge I've gotten so far is to tinkle on my bad neighbor's front lawn. Thus far, I've resisted the urge, so maybe it's not too late. :p

Maybe theres hope. Perhaps you could send one of them man eating Corgys over to the neighbors lawn to do your dirty work?
You want me to send over the task force to take out your neighbor?
We could send over the bike squad to do donuts in his lawn, that ought to tick him off some.

Every once in a while I let them stray over to that side of the yard! Also, I bought some stinky-but-pretty Cleveland Pear trees and put them on his end of the back yard. The wind is usually blowing in his direction. Hope he enjoys his new patio!
He's calmed down some since he first moved in beside me, but he started out complaining about me cutting grass on his side of the line and about my storage building only being 7 ft. off the line.

Ok, I'll send the task force to take him out. We just don't have to tolerate people like that.

I don't know for sure why this happens, but I believe the shape of the base (Someone called it a Roman Chariot) may have something to do with it, as it gives no support to the rear and provides leverage on the front. So under recoil any play will be exaggerated and could cause it to nose dive rounds and jam.
(As a side note "rant", Kahr seriously needs to redesign their mags and floor plates??? They have great guns, I love the two I have... But they have the worst mag plates I ever seen, They don't fit flush or look fitted on any model. Also the stacking is not really great and the top round hanging way out the top seems a little lame as well. Really Kahr... try a little harder, this is the easy stuff) Rant off.
I have a new CM9 and a CW9 I tried the 7rd mag with the ext (Roman Chariot) base from my 8rd mag on it in my CM9. It pinched the crap out of my palm. So I stopped using it after a few shots. Yesterday I got to the range again, this time I used a flat steel floor plate on the 7rd mag and shot with it using it just like I would be using it as a back-up reload. I went through 50 Fed.115gr FMJ and 50 Gold dot 124gr +p HP with no issue at all. So about 50 rds went through the 7 rd mag. I did not get pinched, and it worked flawlessly. And as a bonus it is a little smaller for pocket carry. Works for me... so far.
Did taking away the Roman chariot help it work by taking away some leverage? Don't know, But thats my theory.

I got my new PM9 yesterday, and used both the extended mag and the regular mag "equally" for the 200 round break-in. Being that the extended mag holds one more round than the regular mag (duh!), I used the extended mag for over half of the 200 rounds. I had zero issues with either of the mags. I have big hands, and grip pretty hard, too.
Not sure if that is useful info, but so far so good for me at least with the 7-rounder.
