View Full Version : thread jacking/off topic...(*please read)
You all know we have a great forum here, it is really one of the best places to talk gun stuff on the net without the egos and in-fighting that so many have.
So I say this as an honest criticism and not pointed or personal at anyone.
We all get along well and naturally the busting and joshing is going to happen.
In all honesty, its getting out of hand....I'm finding it difficult to read information on topics I'm interested in or follow a thread because I have to sift through post after post of ha-ha's and he-he's. Some threads are completely lost to these on going ball-busting fests. I come to post something on a thread I made and I find 2+ pages of unrelated chatter....
I'm sorry to sound like a fun sucker but there is an inordinate amount of it on this forum, it has annoyed me enough to post this and I'd hate to see a good thing ruined.

ur probably right but this forum started out with a personality different than most forums. I myself tend to over "fun" thinbgs but 90% os directed a bawanna, and no one else, He and I have a repore that is different than most.
I like most tend to post helpful information and suggestions in a thread and maybe in anothe thread I might bantermy ol friend. I try not to mix um up together. I a not defending or offending it either. Mosst like you are straight posters and leave the banter 0out of it,then there is ol jocko who goes both ways ..

Pain send me a list of the guilty parties and I'll hand out severe reprimands.
Ok, Ok, I know I'm the most guilty of all, it's a curse. I suggest we all use the monthly anything goes thread for the good times and banter but also we all know that if we stick to the straight and serious thru out things really get boring and negative around here. No action, few post, nothing fun. Alot like some of the other forums you mention.
So while we need to rein things in a bit (pains right, I'll grant him that) we don't need to go over board on serious either.
Pain I sent you a PM.
Jocko, don't go telling people you and I got a repore, that's kind of a behind closed door thing, no reason to tell the world you know?

It would seem that the OP and others who favor less thread jacking are all off line and unable to mount a defense, not that they need one. They have a genuine concern and I think we all will subconciously cut back a bit on the thread drift.
As me and several have discussed on the side, it seems when there are genuine concerns and problems to solve the drift goes away. Case in point, in all the Hee Haw in the one thread Jocko asked about the interface/stripper bar, the heehaw and banter instantly went away and the discussion was back to lets figure out this issue which is our primary goal here helping others and by default ourselves.
At any rate lets not become uncivil to those who aren't here to defend or interact in their own behalf if you get my meaning.
I'd hate to have Pain log in next time only to find his issue is the biggest hee haw thread we've had in a long time.
I'll send a severe reprimand to the evil nephew MikeyKahr and have him seek councilling.

Man, I tell you what - not sure I could be named any more than I have been this day! Evil and instigator!? Y'all trying to get me to take the fall for all the banter around here or get me on johnh's black ball list!?
While I do agree with PaiN that topics sometime tend to drift, I think it's part of what makes KahrTalk KahrTalk. Kahr-related problems are solved, and Kahr-related questions are answered. It doesn't go right to banter all the time (like question asked, 35 posts of banter, question answered in post 37). Sometimes it does go like this (question asked, question answered multiple times and confirmed with proper follow-up, then banter ensues) - the off-topic threadjacking happens after the issues are resolved or when things get settled. If another question arises, the banter slows or ebbs and an answer is again promptly given. Does it sometimes go back to banter? Yes - but not always. And one needs to remember that one doesn't have to read every post unless you want to! Here's what I would have to contribute today:
My PM9's running like a swiss clock, how about yours? Yours too? Great! Ho Hum. Talk to you in 2012.

And no worries nephew with JohnH. I just contacted him directly on the super secret private mod text machine. Your golden. He says long as I keep up on the monthly payments your safe as can be.
For some reason he raised the monthly fee but I think that's how blackmail is suppose to work anyhow.
Dang it, look what you guys are doing, your jerking me off topic. I'm the major culprit with this drift issue. I really am. I think when JohnH gets back from the NRA show I better put myself on 30 day suspension, maybe 15 day. 30 would be cruel and unusual punishment.
MikeyKahr
04-29-2011, 08:42 PM
And one more point. Some here who would be most "guilty" of thread-jacking or banter or going a bit off-topic (whatever you want to call it) are ones that actually contribute the most and are most helpful to those who have the worst problems. Crack CS team at KahrTalk, free of charge for any who want it 24/7. And we always give the proverbial free return authorization.
PaiN - your PM45 you just bought has been, well, a pain (sorry to hear it!). Do you want me, or straight-laced, stiff-upper-lip and royal wedding watching Willieboy scratching our heads and diagnosing your weapon ("well duh, PaiN, it don't shoot without falling apart!" says MikeyKahr wisely). Or would you rather have the crack staff of jocko, Bawanna, Dietrich, wyntrout, jlottmc, GB___, AZ____ and associates tackling your problems? I'd take the latter (sorry Willieboy, just happened to use your name as an example - right!!)
This is like home. This is my online "family". I take off my shoes and put on my slippers. After e-mails and work responsibilities, this is the first place I want to check. My wife gets a bit jealous when I rev up the computer and hop on here. I would suggest that we should be careful what we ask for, because we might just get it (check back to November 2008).

I just wrote a PM to PaiN and told him I would try to tone down my grab assing ways going forward. While I get a kick out of reading the exchanges between Bawanna and Jocko, and enjoy participating myself in the joking around, I certaining don't want to detract from PaiN's or anyone else's experience on these forums. So, as I told PaiN, I am going to try to tone it down and not take threads off track. I think I'll tickle my wife instead.
Editted to add: I was kidding about ticking my wife. I can barely control myself sometimes and she can't stand me. Even the dog I rescued hates me. I meant what I said though, about toning it down. I respect PaiN for speaking up. It took some courage on his part to bring it up, knowing what an group of off-beat characters hang out here. Good for you PaiN.

Subject: This is an Incredible story!
In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University .
On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air.
The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully.
He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.
As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his knife,
after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.
The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.
Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled.
Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.
Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.
Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son.
As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and
walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing.
The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down.
The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.
Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant.
Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure.
He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.
The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs
and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.
Probably wasn't the same damn elephant.
now this is what I would call thread jacking,m but it was cool sent to me by a real jack off to.

KahrTalk is a place you can come to and have a conversation with friends and friendlies about Kahrs or any other make of guns. If I'm talking to a friend, the conversation never stays with what was started. In fact I never know where the conversation will end up but that's normal. Now add 2 or 4 or 27 more people into the mix and you've just stirred up a pot of go crazy. But that's what I love about this site. Our problems always get resolved even if it is in a round about way. I say don't change a thing, just my opinion and I'm not tryin to step on anyone else's toes, except Bawanna, Jocko, Dietrich and O'dell and maybe a couple others who will remain nameless.

I am a member at a medical site I used to frequent. It had a unique feature in that the entire site was in one general forum. Not being used to that I made the suggestion that members would be better served if they broke the site into a few different forums. Holy Molly you would have thought I stole their whiskey, insulted their wives, made a pass at their daughters and worst of all, kicked their dog!
I made my peace with them and over a years saw this play out at least a dozen times. Along the way I finally began to appreciate why they did it that way. It wasn't like a hall with a lot of individual rooms led by stiffness and politeness, but it was a bunch of folks of both genders (perhaps more) sitting around an old pot belly stove chewing the fat.
They would discuss the serious stuff but along the way someone would say hi to another and ask how their granddaughter was getting along and did that thing with the doctor work out for them? Then others would chime in and the thread drifted a bit. Someone dropping in would ask or offer something about the original topic and that would bounce around then drift again.
Once I got to know the players it just "felt right" and I enjoyed the personalities along with the education. Just took a while and some initial patience. A little like some of the novels I'm reading these days where 200 pages are introducing characters and locals before getting down to the main plot. You kinda need the first part to appreciate the second.

Funny story......that reminds me:
This morning I went to sign my dogs up for welfare. At first the lady said, "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare."
So I explained to her that my dogs are mixed in color, unemployed, can't speak English and have no freaking clue who their Daddy's are. They expect me to feed them, provide them with housing and medical care.
So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify.

For example, "why does my gun do such and such?" If someone wants help on a serious issue, that is when they most get upset for hijacking onto something not helpful to them. Make sense? I tend to follow that sort of unwritten conduct rule on forums, at least until the OP seems to have gotten a reasonable answer.

and no doubt John, that is what this forum does we tend to then get off track after the thread has basically run its course.

u are grounded bawanna, just look around. The day u stay focused is the day this forum starts to move backwards. You keep good peace when maybe war is close. U make good sense when sometimes sense is no where even close, u change,, the forum changes, like I say , just the nature of the beast. This is the internet and it comes in all makes an colors..
oh yes and as u know we are all AUTHORITIES..

Thank you johnh for the input and clarification.
I too believe that we need to get to the problem solving first and it appears for the most part that we do. After the problem is solved, seems to be the main area of thread jacks.

I am well aware that I`m to blame for a lot of the off the wall stuff that goes on here.I didn`t realize that it was bothering some folks so much but I can readily see their point. Therefore, I resolve to rein myself in and knuckle down to the business at hand.If I can`t offer something constructive in a thread,I need to keep my mouth shut and my fingers off the keyboard. It will most likely result in a better informed group of gun owners.I am ashamed of myself.Again.

Dietrich,
Please don't do that, some of your comments really make my day, like that possum in the toilet deal. Just save em for after the problems has been solved or question answered. That shouldn't be a problem with anyone, if it is, perhaps they are wound a little too tightly and no doubt need some stress relief that your comments can provide.

+ about a million and a half. Use the anything goes thread, wait till the issue is taken care of or just feel free to drop a bomb now and then. You ease up anymore and you'll be invisible and I'll ground you.
Say hi to your cousin Shirley for me too.

When I first got my MK9 I carried it in a SmartCarry in shorts. When I was at the kiddie pool with my daughter, she was 18m to 2yrs or something, I wore it that way.
She was in the very shallow end having fun with a bunch of kids, her mom and adults friends all around her, me standing on the edge watching.
As the group was playing, they didn't realize they were drifting toward the deeper end and all of a sudden I saw my girl go under, an in that split second, no one watching but me.
I jumped it, grabbed her and calmed her and mom down, everyone was fine.
When I got out I realized I had a very wet gun now hanging around my waist.
Because it was a public pool and knew the bathrooms did not have locking doors I elected to just leave it as is, rather than risk panicking the sheeple, as I assessed my pistol.
Well three hours later I get home, I get the gun disassembled and cleaned, but for the life of me I could not get the water stain off of the portion of the slide that was touching my side! Nothing worked.
I finally found a Stainless Steel polishing cloth at a kitchen shop that did the trick. Some kind of polish in the cloth and it worked wonders on the stubborn spot.
The mark was there for over a year before I found a that cloth! I was sure it was permanent, but I am never one to give, thank goodness.
Still looks brand new four years later and it has renewed my faith in Stainless Steel.
(There, I jacked this thread over to a Kahr subject)

After a period of self loathing I have now gotten over my shame.I feel much better about myself and the way this forum works. It ain`t broke.I have never seen any question go unanswered except the one I asked concerning the Sigma series of S&Ws and I can`t remember what it was anyway.Got to go figure out a new signature.
