9mm 1911s

Who's got one and would you recommend it? I held a Colt Defender, Colt New Agent, and Springfield EMP today. One felt really good in my hand. One was heavier than the others. One was DAO. :)

I had a Para carry 9 that was 1911 style, didn't work out good for me, as much as I loved the gun, it didn't love me back.. I even question why Ieven bought it..

I had a 9mm Commander "conversion" by Colt once. It worked well enough, but for the size and weight (at the time) I chose a S&W 39, getting DA/SA in the choice.

The tiny 9's... if ya gotta have one on the 1911 design, Colt New Agent looks interesting. I dig the no sights ....

LOVE my STI Spartan 9. That thing is damn accurate, it really makes me look good. Here's a pic I took for the 1911's 100th birthday back in March.

I had one FTF, but I'm pretty sure it was my reload. Can't blame it on the otherwise flawless gun.

If memory serves that is Mrs Bigbob68 in the avatar who could most assuredly be referred to as Mrs. Bigboob68. But the other part of my memory tells me Big Bob actually is 6'8" tall, what one might refer to as a big ole boy so forget I even brought any of this up.

I have the Springfield EMP in 9mm and I like it very much, though it has problems with WWB for some reason. One day I plan on sending it back to Springfield for them to repair. It shoots very soft and is very accurate !!! God Bless :)

I think I'd opt for the Browning Hi-Power if I wanted a great SA 1911 type weapon. Mr Browning invented them both, and both are great pistols and are pretty similiar. I just don't see the point in chambering a 1911 in 9 when you have the Hi-Power available.

I own a HiPower and ,in my eyes,it truly is a thing of beauty.Its` finish is in silver chrome which is like satin nickle and it has factory emblem Pachmeyer grips.I don`t carry it very often,only when I`m wearing a sweater or jacket,and I intend on using it only on the classiest of Zombies.Wish I had the computer skills to post pictures but I don`t.Ain`t got no digitil camera for that matter.

Thanks guys, I was wondering what the point of a 9mm 1911 was. That picture is a nice looking High Power, and makes me kick myself for passing up a clone that I could have gotten for a song. Thing was two things would have happened with that 1 I still despise 9mm and that would have led to problems, and 2 I would have had to pass up my beloved P45, so in the end it worked out well.

At the risk of demonstrating what a 1911 bigot I am . . . the left side of the Browning Hi Power has too many odd looking levers for me. Add the visible, external extractor on the other side and there isn't much beauty there either.

The 1911 design seems elegant by comparison. Although not a 9mm fan, I have fired a 1911 in that caliber. It was steel and had very little recoil. The slide sort of ambled to the rear with each shot. Yes, the cost per round of 9mm is lower, but .45 ACP seems to be more fun to shoot.

I guess I am out of the 1911 closet now. :eek:

The beauty of the 9mm 1911 is lower ammo cost, and greater availability. If 9mm and .45 carried the same cost, I don't think you'd see nearly as many 9mm 1911's. Just a guess. I've never felt like less of a man while shooting my Spartan9, but I was able to afford to shoot a little more than most men. That said, now that I'm reloading .45 I see myself shooting .45 a lot more. :)

LOL: If you were to follow the intent of the original MIL-SPEC 1911A1 you'd have to believe that a 9mm 1911 is an oxymoron. In the strictest sense a 9mm can't be a 1911 and still be compliant with the specification. But we all know what liberties the manufacturers have taken with this classic design...some have actually improved it.

Although I like the looks of the Colt New Agent, I'm leaning toward the Colt Defender. The New Agent has trench sights, but it is DAO. I've got my PM9 for pocket carry and don't need another DAO.

Yeah, I think that looks dumb too! I suspect Colt has licensed Para Ordnance's LDA trigger (http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_pistol.php?id=58). I've shot them and they are sweet.

To their credit, Para stuck with standard grips, as pictured below.

I share your reservations about 38 super. Given that it was introduced in the late 1920's, it is certainly out of place in a 1911. But, like 9mm, it was probably a cheaper alternative to .45 ACP. Money talks. But, I don't have to listen, just ask my wife. ;)

Although I don't have a 9mm in a 1911 format I do have my Colt Defender stainless steel in 45 ACP. I just love mine. A fantastic weapon for sure. It is one of the only mini 1911's with a 3" barrel that actually still has the feed ramp built into the frame just like all the other 4" 7 5" Colt 1911's. Most other manufactures (in their 3" versions) have the feed ramp built into the barrel. I noticed that just last week when I pull out all of my other 3" shorties. I suppose thats why the darn thing works so well, especially when one examines the clearance that little pistol has...just rack her back and look at the positioning of the top round in the magazine. All of my Kimber 3" guns has the feed ramp buit into the barrel component and I beleive Springfield and Para's are the same. Now my 4" barreled weapons are like the full size 1911's. Just something to look into I suppose.

I got no experience with them but the Defender looks good to me. Not warmed up to the New Agent very much. We put big dot sights on P380's why use a ditch for a sight on a gun that size? Don't seem natural to me. Course me and natural are rarely associated with each other so that could be a factor.

I have three 9mm 1911s but none the OP has indicated interest in. The attraction is (1) cheaper ammo (2) pleasant shooting, though with enough kick to know you're shooting a "real" gun. :) It's also an excuse to buy another gun.

My three 1911's are 45, as have been the six or seven I've owned in the past. 45 ACP - a real man's caliber! :D

A HP was my first pistol back in 1966. It was my service carry for several years in the Navy. I still have that old gun packed away. I bought a new one in 82, but gave it to my son last year for his birthday. My second pistol was a Colt 1911, but my brother 'borrowed' it in 1978, and I haven't seen it since.

If you just look quickly, you can't really tell the difference between the two. Both the .45 and 9 shoot very well for entry level guns. I added some stuff, but they are mostly stock.

I shoot a 9mm 1911 RIA.
It's wonderful.
The recoil is less, you're back on target faster, more accurately and you can get more rounds downfield if you need to. Lighter both in ammo and pistol weight.
That's why they are the most commonly used military pistol round in the world.

As to the OPs question, I would recommend a Kimber Pro Carry II in 9mm.

I had a SPringfield 9m Target which was very relaible but the best groups i could obtain at 50 ft were ca 4+ kinches - that after 2 trips to the factory. I finally sold it and purchased a Damn Wesson PM-9 which is equally relaible and provides ca 1 inch groups at that distance. I also shoot my PO18-9LDA which will provide 1 to 1 1/2 inch grouips at 50 ft.

^ I'd check your barrel lockup tightness first, then your sights.


Note: using a Rock Island GI 9mm 1911 I can get 1" groups no problem.
