Mexican Coke

I'm talking about the the soft drink here. :p While grocery shopping in Kroger today, I ran across some Coca Cola in the Mexican section of the store and bought a bottle. It was the Mexican formula with real cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Have ya'll every tried it? It doesn't really taste like Coke to me. It is just as carbonated but seems to be missing the bite. Just thought I'd share....

Hmm.... no Mexican denigration, but have you tried it with a twist of lemon ? I do that to Pepsi to simulate that Coke "bite", comes pretty close.

Actually, yes I have tried that. I had to go to Juarez to get it, but I used to have some. It was smooth, and mixes well with vodka, or spiced rum.

I'm not wild about lemon in my drinks, but some Captain Morgans would help the taste! :)

I've found that "The Captain" does spice up my Cokes, and Pepsi's also.:D

I took several church groups across the border from El Paso to build small houses for the poor. (to dangerous now) The two favorite drinks were the Coco Cola and an apple drink Manzana Lift. People liked them enough to bring back several bottles of each when they could. If you like the coke Sams now sells it by the case.

Costco sells it by the case here & most "real" Mexican restaurants have it by the bottle. It tastes like the old original Coke to me.

Yes. Mexican Pepsi and coke rock.

Tastes like the original stuff, not the syntheticly sweetened crud you get from vending machines these days.

I dig one now and then as a treat compared to the usual water:D

Usually Mexican soft drinks are sweeter than their US version.

I too have had it. To me it tastes like the Coke I drank as a teenager in the 60's. Much smoother with none of the "bite" I get from the current formula. Captain Morgan definitely improves the taste of todays stuff.

I would agree, it's pretty good stuff. Reminds me of how Coke used to taste way back (well, the mid-70s at least when I was allowed to drink it) when. Not as cloying as the modern Coke.

A few years ago when stationed at FT McPherson, GA I met a reserve officer that was a member of senior management in Coca-Cola there in Atlanta. Since I am a Soda-pop-aholic I have drank Cokes in many many countries. So I ask him why does Coca-Cola tastes so different in other countries? His answer will dampen your enthusiasm for Mexican Coca-Cola (Mexican Coke could cause some confusion here).

He said that here in the US they strip the water down to the basic H20. In other countries they only provide the bottlers under license the Coca Cola Syrup.

So the answer to why it taste different in Mexico is "the water".:eek:

A lot of countries outside the US use real cane sugar in their Coca-Cola and Pepsi formulas. They also often come in the glass bottles!

Tip, though: if you go to a foreign country and buy a glass-bottled soft drink from a vendor, you aren't supposed to walk away with it. You have to drink it right there, because they want that bottle back (they get money back for returning the bottle).

HFCS is trash, IMO. Cane sugar is clearly superior.

Be careful with some of those "old style" specialty colas they sell in some grocery stores under some "small" brand - look at the ingredients. They often still have HFCS. Seems some people just don't understand - use real sugar or go home!

i recently purchased a 12 pack of throwback pepsi here in st.louis and ill have to say it was not very good lol. granted its made with real sugar it just isnt dr.pepper.
My drink of choice(since you are talking about mixing) is red stag jim beam (black cherry bourbon whiskey) and dr pepper. try it, its fabulous.
