You have to check out this video, which is a great interview (with photos) with a law enforcement officer who got into a gunfight after a foot pursuit of a perp: http://www.policeone.com/policeonetv/videos/3592582-will-to-win-jared-reston

Several things spring to my mind to include but not limited to:

* Profound respect, as always, for the difficult job our LEO community does every day when they put their lives on the line for us all. They risk not only their own lives but their families have to endure the daily stress and knowledge that their loved ones may never come home - every day.
* Getting shot is not a show stopper - for you or the bad guy. The fight goes on - keep going until the threat is completely eliminated.
* Mental toughness (called the "warrior spirit" in the video) is critical.
* Related: think through in advance how you will react and prepare yourself mentally to survive
* Front sight, front sight, front sight
* LEOs have to handcuff and arrest perps. In our case where we're just reacting in self defense to a lethal situation: don't let the perp get within grabbing distance of you or a loved one.

As I said, amazing video.

makes me not think twice everytime i strap my body armor on everyday. Glad he won the fight and to think for less than 100 dollars worth of stuff!

What a true warrior. NEVER GIVE UP!!! WEAR YOUR ARMOR!!! Having been on the receiving end twice and the sending several times it is far better to give than receive. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths a subject will go to for what many consider a minor crime, shoplifting.

Thanks for sharing. Excellent example of the warrior mentality that any of us could need to survive a bad situation.

Also example that there's no such thing as 1 shot stopping with an occasional exception. Even multiple hits with a 45 didn't stop the LEO - but thank God for the chest plate.

Thanks for posting this, Ray. I thought the perp with no record had emptied a Glock 21 into him at close range. Of course there were people saying it was police brutality and why didn't the cop just "wound" him or something. I call that the "He be good boy" syndrome or whatever.

I've mentioned this instance several times from having read it in the news here, but it's the first time for the video and it was excellent full-widescreen.

I'm still waiting to hear about another incident in Florida where a policewoman took on three guys in a garage when separated from her partner. She took a lot of hits but managed to stay in the fight and take down three suspects. I lent my copy of The Sheriff's Star Magazine to someone and don't have a reference for that, though.

Truely amazing video. I wonder if they still use that brand of taser or have a new policy to test them to prove they work correctly? This is great incentive to learn and practice shooting from different positions. LEOs sure have my respect.

Excellent video, thanks for sharing Ray. Something to bookmark next time someone questions a police officer's zeal to protect and serve. And to think, all that for a shirt and a pair of jeans. At 18. Anyone doubt which direction our society is headed?

That video makes me wish my wife was not in the police academy. Glad he survived though.

Definately going to show this to new recruits. And some old timers who complain about wearing body armor. Thankfully, I got policy passed that you must wear your body armor when in uniform a few years ago.

Thanks for sharing. LEO's have a tough job--this proves it. Glad this man is OK. Like it was said earlier. All for a pair of pants and a shirt. How does this mentality start?

To answer my own question above. Maybe the graphic video games desensitize kids to what a gunfight really is?
