I just finished cleaning my new CM9. I bought a second mag for it at the gun show today. I noticed that both baseplates of the mags are magnetic. Is there a reason for this? Thanks, I'll be racking the slide a bunch now.

They're magnetic because they're made from steel. The whole mag is steel except for the follower.

I know they are steel. They are magnetic, you can pick up paper clips with them. All steel is not magnetic, it has to be magnatized. I just wonder if there is a reason they were magnatized.

my 4 year+ PM9 is not magnetized. I just checked it,nor is my P380 or K9. I would bet ur magnetized magazine in due time will loose all that magnetism.

Now I can attest that when Bawanna wheels past anything metal that they all attach to his a-s. yUP GODS TRUTH.

LOL! jocko, you're funny! How the h--- have you managed to put 32,000 rounds through your PM9? How many parts have you had to replace? Springs? Barrels? Mags?

Working with metal this is what I know. 400 series stainless is magnetic. I dont know if the mags are a grade of stainless or not. They look like cold rolled steel to me. They are an internal part of your weapon so moisture and rust should not be a problem so therefore steel would be ok.

recoil springs, mag springs, two mazg followers. nothing else. barrel looks like new as does the gun, still IMO as tight as it was after the first 1000 rounds. What is there to wear other than the above mentioned??

the mag followers didn't wear, they cracked but never giave an inidication until I took the magazine apart to clean and inspect.:smash:

You can demagnetize the magazines with a video tape eraser as I have, or you can float one on a plastic saucer and use it to find magnetic north... as I have also done!

I noticed that most are somewhat magnetic and did a post on that:
