View Full Version : Nifty free Gun database (in beta)

On another forum a member pointed me to this (http://myifsgundb.com/) site, where a free gun database is in the works (free beta right now). Called Intelligent Firearm Solution database, it runs via Adobe Air on either Windows or Linux. I've been playing around with it and it's pretty cool.
Disclaimer: I do not get any compensation or reward from mentioning this, just thought I'd pass along the info to folks who are interested in maintaining a gun database. Check it out. It has many handy features, plus allows users to encrypt their databases.

Do you know anything about the folks providing this service? It's hard not to be suspicious of anyone who wants you to effectively register your firearms on the Internet. Yes, I might be paranoid, but with so many scams on the Internet . . . :o

The person that referred me to the program is a staff member of wvcdl.org (West Virginia Citizens Defense League), and is a friend of the developer.
My understanding is that this is a downloadable application that runs and stores the database locally (you can specify on your system where you'd like it saved and also where to keep a secondary backup locally). This does not appear to be a cloud application that stores data on some foreign website. The only internet connectivity required is for downloading updates or for searches you specify on gun auction sites. Feel free to contact the developer on his site with questions...he's started a little mini-forum on the site for discussions about the beta testing and the IFS database.

Cool! The description makes it sound like it might be stored on their site.
Edited to add: My bad, sorry. I need to read more carefully and completely. They are clear about my concern, "MyGunDB is a downloadable program that stores everything encrypted on your system, not online."
Still, if you care about these folks you might suggest that they add some identification. I would never have guessed it were supported by West Virginia Citizens Defense League from their domain registration informaiton:

That's an excellent suggestion. I've contacted him to suggest he offer some identification on his page so people know who he is. The developer's name is Alan Ellis (there is a facebook link on his site as well), FYI.

Wow, I just got an email back from him minutes after sending him a message on his site:
I'll add an About Me section on there. Thanks for the suggestions
As a heads up, the app is signed with a code signing cert which is pretty much tied to my drivers license, home phone (they had to contact me on it for verification), etc so they can be sure I am who I say I am, and if anything malicious was done with my code, the cert provider would revoke it -- Just one of the ways I am trying to reassure users.
I added a mention about the code signing cert with a link that helps explain what it is. Hope that'll help. I really do understand the requirement for security and privacy and I'm doing everything I can to demonstrate it.
But hey, thanks for trying out the app! Let me know if you have any other suggestions! I love hearing feedback from users.

Very cool! That's better than relying on a FaceBook link that many people will avoid because of the bad press surrounding Zuckerberg's handling of other people's data.
I presume you are aware that every time you use such a link it adds more information to the FaceBook databases allowing them to further zero in on who you are and what you do? Oh, and then FB sells the aggregate data to advertisers and retailers. Ever wonder how so many websites seem to know what you are looking for as soon as you arrive? On first glance, it might seem like a convenience, but FaceBook is worth a lot of money because it can sell everything about you to anyone who is willing to pay. :(

Sorry to jump in, I'm actually the developer. Couple things: 1) the WVCDL isn't partnered with me -- I'm friends with a member who was letting people know about the app since he liked it. Just wanted to make it clear ;)
2) The secret registration is setup because of 2 reasons. The first is that since this is developed on a personal level and not a business, I don't want to have phone calls in the middle of the night ;) The second is that the domain is registered with the company I actually work at and I want to keep the two separate to avoid confusion about it.
I understand your concerns, and that's why I have encrypted databases for users, signed the app with a verified Code Signing cert which verifies my identity, etc.
My father was an FFL and I'm a C&R, and this app is being made to replace a hardcopy bound book for us. Your bound book is safer encrypted than being hardcopy -- anyone can read a hardcopy book, but not an encrypted database.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

Welcome to the forum, Mr. Wolfrage!
With any luck, you will find many people here who appreciate the value of your application. There are several active members who are or were part of the firearms industry.
Please don't let the old curmudgeons like me discourage you.
Oh, and just so it is not lost in the babble, here is the Link to My IFS Gun Database (http://myifsgundb.com/).

Ha thanks, looking forward to meeting everyone. And hell, people like you help keep everyone else honest! But hey, even if you don't want to use mgdb for "real", you could always play with it and see if you can break it, or have a better idea on how to do something. While I generally don't have to worry about running out of people online willing to tell me what I'm doing wrong, I could always use another pov heh

And thanks for the welcome, I'm already enjoying the general chat this morning!

I'm not sure what I think about the new Unity interface. I didn't mind a similar layout for the Netbook version in the past year or two, but for the stock desktop I'm not sure what I think yet. I'm not so keen on abrupt GUI paradigm shifts.;)

Tell you what, I've been using Win7 since the day it was released on my home office machine, and I STILL can't get over the fact that they moved my damn minimize all to desktop button to the opposite side of the taskbar. So, with that said, I know exactly what you mean. :D

v0.87.6 released -- It's a point release because I still have a couple things to finish before 0.90 (like data validation for .CSV imports).
* Selecting Business name sets fields
*Resizable -- not everything works as intended yet with resizing but it's a start!
* Audit system in place -- changing fields required by ATF for A&D reports will create a log entry to be displayed in A&D reports.
* Stats count for firearms now only shows stats for Owned firearms
* Save system - you now need to click Save to save your changes when editing the General tab or the P/S tab data
Wolfrage

v0.90 Released:
First image added for a firearm gets set as the default image.
Cancel button now switches to View mode for General tab. Yeah, that annoyed me too.
SBR and DD added to NFA items.
Accessories tab
Clear button added to search tab
Left padding reduced in reports
Manuals can be any file type, not just PDF (I.E. HTML, .jpg, etc)
Random backend fixes/tweaks
I got a sun tan as proof I go outside

Hey guys, I really need your help testing this version before I release it. Please backup your database, just in case as always.
http://myifsgundb.com/ifs/Test/IFS.air
You need to manually install it.
Test the accessories section and let me know if you have any issues or not. This next release will be a rather large one, and I'm not done just yet -- I still want to try getting images to zoom when hovered over, let you set the DB location and have a function to restore your backup from Dropbox; I may not get it all done before the release as I don't want to screw with the code again until I make sure nobody is having issues with this version. I made HUGE changes to the backend, so there should be a performance increase as well.

* Maximized state is persistant
* Accessory images fixed.
* You can get anything you want at Alice's resturant. Except for Alice.

Not sure what the black market has to do with your serial numbers -- the black market would be selling guns, not serial numbers so I'm a bit confused there, but with MyGunDB the database is automatically encrypted and data from the database never leaves your computer at all. It is far more secure than having a hardcopy boundbook or written list, unless you keep that list in a bank safety deposit box.

have you ever seen a black market gun? original serial numbers are removed and another can be easily put on, there are people out there making billions off black market hot guns that would probably love a fresh list of legit serial numbers linked to manufacturing brands. hopefully the ATF would catch a double serial number incase one got transferred but still. best of luck but i'm seeing no benefits. just another thing for the gov't to get their hands on then they have a list of your entire gun collection. sorry just seems like another thing to be easily corrupted.

I'm going to gloss over the part about numbers being easy to replace as removing etched markings and replacing them without it being obvious is far from 'easy' from a strictly technical aspect.
You are missing the point -- it's not "just another thing for the gov't to get their hands on". The database is encrypted. So it'd actually be easier for them to simply use a search warrant for your firearms and/or paperwork if they were trying to get your info. As for no benefits, what method are you using currently to keep track of your firearm data? Paper? Excel? Memory? MGDB allows automatic backups, stats tracking, ammo and accessory management, storing or images, manuals, tax stamps, etc.
As for renumbering a firearm serial, aside from the fact that someone would need to get your serial (which again, would be rather difficult since the database is encrypted) they would have to hope that you had the same make and model to use the serial -- otherwise if that didn't matter they could make something up.
So in short, some black market hacker would not only need to find your computer, figure out how to access your computer (you ARE using a firewall and anti-virus program, right?), but they would also need to crack the encryption on the database and then they would need the same firearms you have... You have better odds of winning the lottery. Three times. In a row. By finding the tickets on the ground walking to your car.
And besides, any C&R or FFL is required to have a boundbook -- it would make no sense for them to use a paper boundbook over digital.
I am a firm believer in security and privacy, but oy.

I'm a computer guy. I run a computer consulting business. All of my business receipts and check stubs from customers are scanned and the paper copies recycled - I don't even bother shredding them. My password list for my own servers, vendor accounts, etc. and the same for all of my customer networks is in an encrypted SQL database with a web front end.
I'm telling you this so that you understand I am not a technophobe, nor overly paranoid about storing things electronically.
I think this database is a fantastic piece of work, and great for people who work with guns for their business (and who already have a BATFE grappling hook embedded in their colon anyway).
But I would be hesitant to use it myself, for my guns.
Why?
1. Back door. What is the password reset procedure? Is there a "master" password (one that you will admit to, or one that you won't publicly admit is there)?
2. What if the government leaned on you to quietly introduce a "feature" in one of your bugfix revisions that uploads the database to them?
3. If the authorities can get a warrant to search my place, they can also compel me to reveal my password. This has been proven in real life. There are many arguments about whether this can or cannot be done, and many instances that can be referenced where it went one way or the other. Some were forced to do so. Others were not. Some were overturned in an appeal. Here are a few search results: http://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ie=UTF-8&ion=1#hl=en&safe=off&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=court%20compel%20reveal%20password&oq=&aq=&aqi=&aql=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=af73696fe4de10c7&ion=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1920&bih=963
The bottom line though, is that if there is a password that can be revealed, and a database that can be accessed via that password, the authorities can make it VERY expensive and unpleasant for me, whichever way it turns out.
It's far easier to delete a password-protected Word doc, defrag the hard drive, and burn any paper copies and pretend they never existed than to wipe out a database application and all traces that it ever existed (registry entries, DLL files left behind, temp files, event log entries, etc.).
So I have to decide just how paranoid I am about the government and their possible interference, and whether I want to go to the trouble of setting up a virtual PC that has no access to the internet, with the data stored on a removable USB stick that I can throw in the fireplace.
Oh, and whether I want to pay $40 (or $20 for a "lite" version) for the database.
I do have one question: Does the registration fee cover all upgrades, forever, or just within the major version (purchase of 1.0 registration works for all 1.x releases, new registration required for 2.x releases)?
Wolfrage

1. Back door. What is the password reset procedure? Is there a "master" password (one that you will admit to, or one that you won't publicly admit is there)?
There is no password reset -- the password isn't stored anyplace. When you type in your password, it uses that on the fly to generate the decrpytion hash to decrypt the data stream.
2. What if the government leaned on you to quietly introduce a "feature" in one of your bugfix revisions that uploads the database to them?
You mean after I went to the newspapers and TV media or after I told them to go fornicate with themselves? I'd release the source code to the public rather than do that.
3. If the authorities can get a warrant to search my place, they can also compel me to reveal my password. This has been proven in real life. There are many arguments about whether this can or cannot be done, and many instances that can be referenced where it went one way or the other. Some were forced to do so. Others were not. The bottom line though, is that if there is a password that can be revealed, and a database that can be accessed via that password, the authorities can make it VERY expensive and unpleasant for me, whichever way it turns out.
Yep. But of course it's far, far, easier for them to get a warrant to just go to your house and see what you've got instead of them trying to get your password, much less trying to hack the software.
It's far easier to delete a password-protected Word doc, defrag the hard drive, and burn any paper copies and pretend they never existed than to wipe out a database application and all traces that it ever existed (registry entries, DLL files left behind, temp files, event log entries, etc.).
I wouldn't store anything in a passworded word file that I want to keep private. Plenty of tools to crack them easily ;)
On the other hand my encrypted database is far more difficult.
So I have to decide just how paranoid I am about the government and their possible interference, and whether I want to go to the trouble of setting up a virtual PC that has no access to the internet, with the data stored on a removable USB stick that I can throw in the fireplace.
Again though, it'd be far easier to just get a search warrant and look at your collection, if it came to that.
Oh, and whether I want to pay $40 (or $20 for a "lite" version) for the database.
Well there I can't argue :D I feel it is a fair and reasonable price but I understand that monetary value varies person to person.
I do have one question: Does the registration fee cover all upgrades, forever, or just within the major version (purchase of 1.0 registration works for all 1.x releases, new registration required for 2.x releases)?
It handles all future updates. I plan on releasing addons that will be a separate cost, but all updates to the main system will always be included with that one time payment.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

I wouldn't store anything in a passworded word file that I want to keep private. Plenty of tools to crack them easily ;)
Just as a clarification: My current gun database (Word doc) isn't very secure and isn't even really intended to be. It is perhaps a little bit more secure than the paper hard copy stored in my wife's desk so she has the list in case I croak unexpectedly.
I know it's not a secure system. I'm not saying it is, or that I want it to be. Just that it's easy to dispose of. If I were going to go looking for a more secure system, the paranoia employed in that planning session might not allow for a computer database written by someone else.
Easy for you to say now that you'd never write that code in. Not as easy in some wild, paranoid, government-is-taking-over scenario where they've imprisoned your pet parakeet in gitmo and won't give it back until you write the code and release it.
It is a good and fair price. I've spent more for less many times, and will do so again. But as you said - it's subjective. I mean, some guys on this forum reload their ammo!
Anyway, I just wanted to lay out the parameters as I saw them in case anyone wanted to discuss it further.

I do understand the privacy/security aspect -- the program isn't for everyone any more than any other method is. Originally the program was written because I needed a way to have a digital bound book, as I had gotten my C&R, and nothing met my needs. Only later on did I realize others wanted to use it. C&Rs and FFLs have different standards, since they're required to have a bound book -- it is very different for the average collector. It's always a matter of how much is 'enough' when it comes to security of any kind -- kind of like single stack versus double stack for CCW discussions, or the choice between using a metal gun cabinet and a 1/4 ton safe, I guess.

I recently purchased the complete version, and noticed on FB that you've been working on a mobile version, Wolfrage. LOL, didn't I suggest last year you ought to make a variant for mobile devices on another forum? Santa got me an iPad 2 for Christmas so if the AIR platform will work on that I may have to give it a shot. :D
Though...through serendipitous circumstances I also own a BB PlayBook and HP Touchpad...though I'm lazy and don't know offhand how/if they handle AIR. I suppose I ought to throw caution to the wind and put CyanogenMod on the Touchpad for Android support at some point.

Yes, you did :D I only just now had the time to nail it out though (took off from my day job all last week just so i could spend the week coding it).
I will be releasing MyGunDB Go on the iPad and iPhone -- just waiting on Apple to finish my paperwork so i can release versions for them. it's the exact same code for the program as I use for the Android version, just packed to match the platform.
And it should run on ********** as well, though I have no experience with exporting for that platform -- shouldn't be hard, I just need to read up on it a bit. You're like the only person I know with a BB these days so you can be my test subject ;)

BB really dropped the ball (why does NoirBerry get asterisked out in posts here...spam control?) launching it before it had all its stuff in place. Truth be told, as you alluded in your post, I'm not sure how many BB-toting firearms enthusiasts there are out there, particularly with the PlayBook form factor.;)

What I'm dying to see is how the IOS version versus Android stats go -- I want to know which version gets used the most once it's in both markets.

I've downloaded this before and played with it. I'm seriously considering paying for it. For those of you that are really paranoid you could run it on a machine that does not access the internet.
I like this because I'm a tad OCD and this allows you to keep track of every aspect of your firearms.

Users upgrading Adobe AIR to 3.4 have run into an issue where their copy of MyGunDB appears unregistered and, if they had set a custom database location the program doesn’t see it properly.
It appears to be due to a change in the latest AIR update affecting access to the Encrypted Local System, which is where settings are stored. Adobe is aware of the issue and is working to fix it.
As a workaround for the moment, you need to just downgrade to Adobe AIR version 3.3 again. Please download the Windows version here: http://download.macromedia.com/air/win/download/3.3/AdobeAIRInstaller.exe
or the OSX version here: http://download.macromedia.com/air/mac/download/3.3/AdobeAIR.dmg
You MUST uninstall AIR 3.4 first before you can install version 3.3.
Do that and it should start working again for you. Please let me know if you continue to have issues.
Divers licsense home phone? YIKES. is that to save big brother time when he gets ready to come take our guns away? NO THANKS!

The program is great for a firearms store, and overkill really for the average collector with a handful of firearms. For personal use, you do not have to enter home phone, dl, etc. If you run a business and need to keep a digital copy of the sales sheet for a firearm sold to the JohnnyQ public, it is great. It is actually nice to have for me as I do buy and flip a few guns a year. I can enter the buyer info for anything I sold in case I loose my paper bill of sale....

I think you're misunderstanding those fields.
The Driver's License field is for when you sell a firearm to someone -- it's theirs, not yours. That's used for printing A&D reports -- for C&R license holders and FFLs. Same with home phone -- it's used for the report header, that's all.
