View Full Version : Anyone try a PM/CM in an IDPA "BUG" class match?

I didn't use my new CM9 in the local IDPA match today because I lost some magazine parts and didn't have any spares. I also have a very sore shoulder and couldn't practice much with the CM9 so I shot my SIG P226 instead. Turns out there wasn't a BUG class today anyway. I entered SSP and got beat by the local young and very good LE people. I may try the CM9 next time anyway, just to see how it would do, since it is my usual carry gun. Most entrants don't use their EDC gun in matches.

Anyone have any experience with using the little Kahr or other subcompacts in IDPA matches? What did you conclude? BUG class empty? Not competitive? No fun compared to shooting a full size?

Cut me some slack here. I'm a newbie to both pistols and IDPA. All I know for sure is that both are a lot of fun.

The more practical side of shooting competitions would be to use the gun you carry the most. I think it would be a better test to see how you fair against others who have stock bugs. I don't know much about shooting competitions so I can't say for sure, but I would be interested in using my Kahr for comps

To me, shooting is shooting. BUG, or your regular class, it's all good. I used my K9 for a BUG match and found that two 7-rnd. magazines were enough because it was more or less designed for smaller capacity guns. Not like the classifiers where I'd like to have four magazines for the K9.

I started doing IDPA not to compete against others, but against myself. Hence, I don't give a rat's patootie what other people there shoot. I shoot what I carry, so I'll have the skill and confidence when I need it.

Went back to the range today with the CM9 and PM40 and three mags each, holster, mag pouch, and 10 paper plates. Tried 100 rounds of 2 rounds/mag, 10-15 yards, hit the paper plates with 2 holes each. Got to practice draws, first shots, second shots, moving shots, just like I did with the larger P226 pistol last week. I was able to get somewhat comfortable with using the little gun like the big one. Certainly there are no mechanical difficulties with the CM9 setup if I wanted to try it in a IDPA match.

My stock CM9 sights are different from the PM40 and SIG night sights and I will need to change the sights or shoot a lot more to improve accuracy.

Fairly speedy mag drops and swaps were possible after polishing the magazines and cutting enough clearance for the mag release from the grip tape I had added earlier.

This range session went well enough so that I and becoming more confident that I can try the CM9 in the July club match if I am in town. Need a few more sessions to work on accuracy and speed now that I am sure the magazines and pistol will work fine.

I switch up my IDPA shooting between SSP, ESP, and CDP. I never shoot more than 1 class per night and sometimes I'll shoot the COF twice and compete against myself. The real value of IDPA for me is that it gets the blood pumping, adrenaline going, and really makes you think about engaging the targets. It's perfect practice.

One of these days I'll have my P45 and I've decided that I'll use that exclusively for a few months and really learn the gun.
