My stepdad gave me his Marlin Model 97 22LR Rifle about 55 years ago. The serial number is 289730 and I think it was made in 1904 (if I looked it up right). I shot it quite a lot as a kid but not for over 50 years. At the gun show a while back a man had a similar one for sale for $900 and we talked a bit. He thought it should be worth $700 or more as long as it doesn't have a barrel bulge (it doesn't).

I've been thinking about it since and have decided to sell or trade it if I can get a good price. I'm okay with selling this gun as opposed to Dad's Colt, but only for a good price. I have in mind adding a CM45 to my collection when they come out. Maybe range membership or something more if the price is right.

I know some of you are collectors and may have a pretty good feel for what it is worth, so please chime in. Here are the pics I have.

You don't want to sell that. Its in fine shape. Hang on to it, pass it along to kin.

Ok, yah, I'm too sentimental

I'd keep it too. My few years old Blue Book has it ranging from 2,500 at 98% to 375 for 10%
60% is 1,000 bucks. Impossible to grade accurately from a picture but what I can see looks at least 50 or 60 condition and easily better than that. 50% is 850 so the guy might not be too far off.

Wish I had some disposable income might solve this issue real easy. I love old stuff.

Yeah, between you guys and my wife - plus the look my son gave me - have me rethinking selling it. It comes down to wanting a CM45 and since they aren't out yet I'll wait.

Linc Ol` Buddy,I`ll have to go along with CJB on this one. That rifle looks to be in pretty good shape and would make a fine heirloom IMO.Get yourself an old coffee can or something and start throwing your loose change and whatever else you can scrounge in it to save. Then just leave it alone and let it grow.By the time the CM45s come out you just might have the funds to jump on one.Have a yard sale and sell some of your wife`s stuff when she ain`t looking. You can come up with several hundred dollars quicker than you think if you`re inventive.

Okay guys, I give. The rifle stays, so does the Hi-Standard 22 Military pistol I got when I was 12 and the antique violin handed down several generations. I got it when I was about 8 and it took 1 lesson for me to know it wasn't for me.

We have a lot of stuff to sell via EBay that we collected over the years and decided that's a good job for our 14 year old granddaughter for the summer. So, all in all I guess we'll scrape by, but I'm gonna get me a CM45 when they come out.

Do we get to see a picture of the Millitary Hi Standard? That's definitely a candidate for adoption right there.

I think you're making the right decision. Money simply can't match the historical and family value there. Pass it on to your kids.

Good choice to keep that Marlin OldLincoln. I have a Winchester collection from my father-in-law and before he passed, I promissed him that I would not sell them. I built a nice display case for them and put his name on a plaque in his memory. He got to see it before he passed and was delighted. Pass them on.
