View Full Version : I think my firing pin broke?

So I was dry firing my p380 today, and instead of hearing that beautiful click that it usually makes, I heard a dull thunk. Racked the slide over and over, but same result, and I could see that the firing pin was not coming out of the hole like it usually does.
When the gun was cocked and I shook it, I could hear something metal rattling inside.
Broke the slide down, and when I took everything apart, the firing pin is apart from striker...The metal where it looks like it connects is marred and beat up.
Is the striker and the firing pin supposed to be one piece or two?
Will Kahr send me a new striker assembly??
(sorry I dont have pics)

Bummer!

One piece. Check the parts diagram.

Sure! No worries!

they will send you a new one, I would not think dry firing would cause it but maybe next time get some 380 snap caps just to cover ur butt..

Thanks guys!
So any idea what would cause this???
The gun is practically brand new and only has 200 rounds through it. It was dry fired probably 400 more times...
I also dropped it on concrete the day before I noticed it broke... :hurt:
I would really hate to think that a single drop would cause a catastrophic failure in the gun though...Makes me wonder about durability...My cell phone has kissed the floor at least 50 times and still keeps on tickin!
I will get some snap caps for dry firing when I fix it...Just hoping that didnt cause the break either...
Thanks again for the help!

Take it apart, you should be able to clearly see whats going on. I suspect if it is broken it was just a bad piece to begin with. Perhaps too hard. The tip probably just sheared off. Looking closely at the pin you should be able to tell if it's a clean break.
You can also look the slide over close and see if the striker pin hole is off or getting hit.
I figure it's just a bad pin to start with.
You may just find an unusually large piece of junk left inside from machining thats holding the pin back, maybe the drop lodged it in a position to bugger things up.
I never admit to dropping a gun, actually I never have but make something up, like gravity overcame my ability to hold the gun in a neutral position. Be creative, gotta be better than the truth.

I think that there are just flaws in the metal sometimes. A picture would really help but I think Kahr Customer Service will send you a new one without a picture. Email and call. I have more faith in the emails, especially with pictures.
Dropping a Kahr shouldn't affect the firing pin... it's pretty well protected inside the slide, though some kind of scrap metal or machining debris could have contributed to the break. I've stripped all 4 of my Kahrs at least once. The directions are available and the coathanger "C" clamp really make it easy, as long as you don't let any of the springs or parts get away from you.

And I have some Pix and instructions, along with Ripley16:

The firing pin on my P380 broke at about 900 rounds. I seldom would dry fire with out a snap cap. I don't like the fact Kahr's design does not incorporate a striker rebound spring. Kahr CS sent a new part ASAP.
At about 2600 rounds the P380 extractor broke while at the range. Kahr CS replaced it but gave me a hard time claiming I was using poor ammo. I guess Blazer Brass, WWB and Federal is not good enough.

DJK, thanks for the picture. Thats exactly what my broken striker looks like.
Can I ask why those two springs are such different lengths?
BTW, I also called Kahr today and they sent me a new striker...I really wanted to ask him for a new extractor and recoil springs too, just in case, but I chickened out... :(

All new springs are longer. They take a set under compression... which is taken into consideration by master engineers of such stuff.

No worries! If it was Jay that you spoke with he would have refused anyway. I suspect they are measured on how little they can give out and only allowed to send whatever is broken. I remember asking for a spare screw and washer when they sent me a replacement slide stop spring under warranty. The cost of the screw and washer is $1.10 on the Kahr web site, but you would have thought I asked for spare barrel. Jay was adamant that they could not send a spare in case I dropped one. Oh well. ;)

IMO, one should only ask for what THEY NEED and not what they want...Not that they couldn't give u all that either but what if we all called and asked for the same... Ur striker broke, they sent u a new one, I would advise using snap caps to eliminate that possability, although u should be able to dry fire without this striker breaking, so maybe chalk it up to a bad striker in the first place.

I picked up a bunch of snap caps and use those now when I do a alot of dry firing.
You're supposed to be able to dry fire most modern handguns, but I have my reservations about it.
I like using the snap caps just because it makes me feel like I'm being nice to my tools.
