About a year ago, my son bought himself an A4 (?). I think it is the carbine version of the AR15. It was made by Daniel Defense. He went to the range today with a friend and called to say he (my son) put every in a two inch bullseye at 50 yards using the gun's iron sights. I don't remember how many rounds were included in the term every round, but I know I was impressed when he told me.

Question, is this degree of accuracy to be expected with a rifle of this type?

I don't know if that is good for accuracy, but I will say that the Daniel Defense AR's are awesome guns. I haven't fired my carbine from longer than 25 yards, but at that distance I can put 3 rounds into a dime sized group with iron sights....from a rest...occasionally! LOL!

I'd say it's capable of far better accuracy than that. I suspect its M4 versus A4 but theres a million varieties out there now days.

It's a great carbine without question.

I have a bushmaster A3 w/ 20 inch barrel and it can do 2 inches at 100 yards if I do my part. Back when I was shooting it regular if I could see it at 100 yards I could hit it. Now I'm a little rusty using irons but with a scope it's still right on. You just have to compensate for bullet rise and drop if it has the handle on it but that can be learned. If you use the IBSZ and zero at 50 yards it holds a tight group all the way out to 200 yards just aiming at the same spot every time.

I believe 2 inches at 100 yards is the acceptance criteria for a Military M4.

From personal experience, I will say that I am VERY impressed with my ARs when I do my part.

There was a guy that use to frequent a certain range. He was generally pissed when his bullets didn't touch when shooting 100 yards. He of course was shooting a non-chromed barrel, and hand loads.

The Daniel Defense M4s are very good quality ARs. Depending on the exact model, your son can probably coax sub inch groups, with a scope, at 100 yards. That would be a feat with iron sights though.

As said, the DD M4 is one of the finest out there. Sighting in the EoTech at 50 yards a few months ago, my DD M4 was shooting 1/2"-3/4" 5 shot groups if I did my part. The gun is capable of probably 1MOA or less. More than 5-10 shots in 2" at 50 with irons would be pretty decent for my eyes.

Stoner's design is inherently accurate. Couple that with a quality barrel (which DD has), and good ammo, you are set to get nice, tight, groups. Really I have found any mainstream maker's ARs with good ammo will do very well. The choices in AR vendors now are many. It is the best situation I have ever seen for building ARs. Prices are excellent as well. Truly a buyers market. :D
