View Full Version : CW9 deforming ejected cases

After shooting around 3,000 rounds out of my CW9 I've started collecting my spent brass in contemplation of learning how to reload it.
I've noticed that the open ends of the empty cases are deformed. Rather than being completely circular, the rim of the open end typically has one or two flattened spots. When there are two flattened spots they are always adjacent. Each flattened spot is about 15% of the circumference of the rim. It's as if something pushed the rim at that point in towards the center of the opening about 1-2mm. Many cases have a small scrape mark on the outside of the case, just below the rim, and at the same location as the flattened spot.
Is this normal?

Pretty normal. The flattened area will round out in the sizing die if not too bad.

the owners manual shows that and states it is normal. they will resize fine.

You should see the brass ejected from my .380. Not a problem though, give them to my brother and he reloads using the brass without issue. Have not gotten that happening with the brass from my PM9.

Thank you for your answers. I'm reassured that this is normal for the CW9.
But now a follow-on question: My only other handgun, a Springfield XD-45 doesn't leave deformed brass, and none of the brass (in the 9mm to .45 caliber range) that that I've found left by previous shooters (not that many cases) at my range seem to be deformed. Is this something unique to Kahrs, or is there some percentage of handguns on the market that also eject deformed cases?

No, not unique to Kahrs! The .380 that I spoke about is a Kel-Tec P3AT and it flattens a portion of the brass big time. That would be each and every ejected casing of which about 45 degrees is flattened. MY PM9 does not do it and my Glock 26 doesn't do it and my neighbors Berreta and Taurus .45s do not do flatten the brass.

I have two KelTec P3ATs and mine don't do it...they will throw the cases 25ft over my head and behind me though...:D
My .45 Sig P220 Carry puts big ole dent in the side of the ejected case though....but they mostly iron out in the press. I actually rounded the back edge of the ejection port on the P220, it was a pretty sharp corner and really popped a dent in them, now it is much smaller and smoother.
My two CM9's just barely deform the case mouth a little, no problem to reload, the press rounds 'em back up nicely.
