The rules of gun safety follow from this mindset. There are many variations, and one of them is the Four Rules introduced by Colonel Jeff Cooper, which are:

1) All guns are always loaded.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4) Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
—Jeff Cooper[1

I truly believe it is all of our responsibilities to not only ad hear to,
but teach these rules whenever the opportunity presents itself.

The best place for this is at the public shooting range. Unfortunately, most places do not dedicate an employee as an active obsevant Range Officer. I see #2 violated regularly. Its a lot like traffic, there's always a fool who is convinced the rules don't apply to him.

Many thanks for the reminders. I needed it, particularly after reading thru the thread on "screwups" on this forum.

Yeah, I remember those. I imagine a lot of ranges are like the one I use where there's plenty of proof that lack of safety abounds. There's no designated range officer, just windows behind the shooters where the gun store is. If you look around, there are bullet holes everywhere. I've seen lasers tracking on the ceiling and ceiling tiles flying! I think the .22LR semi-auto carbine shooters are among the worst offenders.

Rule #1 has kept me safe during a few incidents. As a child, I'll always remember my uncle telling me of the "famous last words"...
"I thought the gun was unloaded"
