View Full Version : What’s on your night stand/pillow at night?

I used to have my trusty Sig Sauer P239/357. But started to worry about spring fatigue in the mags being loaded 24/7. Also, I live in a small apartment with thin walls. The Federal Tactical Bonded 357 rounds might find their way into the adjacent rooms. These days my S&W 342 Air Weight 38 P+ DAO revolver, loaded with Speer 135 grain Short Barrel, is my sleepy time girl.

In the side table drawer is a nylon military-like "duty belt" with holster, pouches, and three more mags in pouches for the 645... totaling 5 mags.

the three regulars are CW9 in my headboard, mrs surv has her KT P32 on her side, and then there's my daily field carry SP101 357 on the TV table at the foot of the bed.... and my trusty sidekick, Guinness the "totally chicken" doberman on the bed. On rare occassions there may be a Sig, Kimber or other in place of the CW9, but not often. At least one shorty shottie stays at the ready in my office at the other end of the house.

p.s. for those that fear causing "spring fatigue" by leaving magazines loaded up in semi-autos.... that's a total myth concerning modern springs. It just don't matter if the springs are fully extended or fully compressed compressed.... the fatigue is only caused my the process of compression/decompression, i.e. heavy usage or even loading/unloading. You actually do more harm (which is miniscule anyway) by unloading the mags for "storage".

Not in the nightstand, but well hidden in the bedroom. HK USP 40 with 14 rounds of HST and night sights, plus an extra 13 round mag. It's a bit large to carry but makes a perfect home defense pistol.
For my office/kitchen/living room, a S&W Chief's Special CS45 with 7 rounds of Golden Sabers and a spare mag.
I think my burglars are in jail, but if they come back when I'm here, they won't leave intact.

Being new, welcome, BTW, you probably don't know that I had two burglaries in August, 2010, and again in February, 2011. I lost a total of fifteen pistols, some of them quite valuable. The local police arrested two guys breaking into a house in a nearby subdivision in June, and although they can't tie them directly to my break ins, they think they are the ones. Two of the guns have since been recovered, one I wanted back, a collector nickel SIG P220, and one I didn't care that much about, a Springfield XD c 45. All is good however, since I traded the XD on a Kimber Ultra Carry two days ago.

Imo pistol grips are not the best choice of grip for a HD shotgun. I put a Poly pistol grip rifle stock combo on my Mossberg. Much easier to keep on target when racking the next round in the chamber. Also believe it's faster and easier to aim and control after the shot. One trip to the range and saw that the pistol gips look cool it's IMO is not the best choice for HD. The one I have is very similar to the pic.

I'm reminded of when Dietrich was a bag boy and ran into the lady with the itchy kitty. Drove a Buick as I recall.
To aim the train back towards the track or at least the general direction I have a Glock 21SF in a beside cabinet. My Cbob and my PM45 are on the dresser which requires me to get in the chair but not have to move.
The Glock has a Surefire X300 mounted on it and recently thanks to a friend here XS Big Dot sights.
I used to keep my night guns just out of reach to insure that I was awake and coherent before I got my hands on them but with my reduced mobility along with the fact that I'm sometimes not coherent in the middle of the day I keep one close by at night.

O'Dell, do you have a security system? How about hidden spy cameras to capture their mugshots?
Have you seen the TV commercials for C.P.I. Security? I wonder how much it costs to have two incredible hulks to watch your house and thwart the burglars? And how much payoff to the police so that their response time is 10 seconds? The ads are so far removed from reality—packed with lies—why would anyone want to do business with them?
By the way, there is a great local security company there in the Atlanta area. Very high ratings. I can't remember the name, but they are well known there.

I have a state of the art wireless security system. I know it works because I have accidentally tripped it twice. At the time of the February burglary, I had a wired system with ADP, but they managed to disable it. I have installed "kick proof" steel doors with steel frames on all outside entry ways, and solar powered, motion sensored floodlights at the back and sides of the house. There's a street light in my front yard, so the front is well lit. I also have a seven hundred pound [almost a thousand with guns and ammo] gun safe. I think the house is about as hard as I can live with.

I leave my PM40 ready to go at night, but carry it during the day. I used to leave a loaded shotgun nearby, but read a good article from FrontSight that cautioned leaving loaded guns at home. If a burglar is watching your house, they may break in while you are away. Leaving your loaded gun for them is kind of, well...not so tactical. Leaving your loaded carry gun or any loaded weapon unsecured for a burglar is not a tactical move. Therefore, this makes me be certain to carry it. When I get home, I don't want to be held at gun point by your own loaded weapon. The advice made sense to me and now I only have my carry piece ready at night, and carry it during the day. Everything else is in the vault. While it may make more sense to have a shotgun at the ready, it is not something I want to leave unsecured when I leave home. Locking it when I leave and unlocking it when I return is a nuisance. I have mixed feelings about this, but am confident that my carry PM40 seems adequate for home defense. When the kids and grandkids come to visit us, everything gets unloaded and locked in the gun vault except my carry piece which is locked bedside in a small, cabled key lock metal case.

I did that deal on my 14 year old nickel plated P220 last year. The pistol came back looking and shooting like a brand new gun. Unfortunately, it was stolen a month later, but I got back last month none the worse for wear.

I keep whatever my street carry of the day was/is (depends on whether or not I rotated yet). Then I have the short 18 1/2" Charles Daly field gun in the closet with an empty chamber. Closet also houses the ammo for the real long guns, and all the pistols which stay loaded, as well as the Katana. I have my drawer full of sharp objects under the bed in a drawer. On my nightstand every night is a Tervis Tumbler full of unsweet decaf ice
tea and ice. Also, my bible.....which as of late is my iPad2, and the
current month's version of Tabletalk magazine as well the current
American Rifleman usually. I also have a 4Sevens Quark123 Turbo set on
the "Moonlight" setting, which is about .2 lumens. This is incredibly useful
if you have to get up from sleep and check something out with the light.
.2 lumens won't kill your night vision but is still plenty bright.
In the top drawer is a Stack-on electronic pistol safe (I have kids in the
house) that I unlock before hitting the sack. In the safe is whatever I'm
carrying that week (usually my PM9) Also permanently in there is my
G19 plus 2 extra G17 mags all stuffed with Ranger-T 127gr +P+. This is
my SHTF pistol because I can easily stuff the mags in my pocket and the
G19 "mexican" if necessary and run out of the house with 50 rds of ammo
in a heartbeat.
I can clear the house without losing my night vision with the "moonlight"
mode Quark.
Highly recommend the 4Seven's lights. Absolutely love them. My wife
has the identical light on her nightstand.
Oh and of course probably my single most important piece of safety
gear.......my female Jack Russell "Baby". She gives me PLENTY warning
when something's not right in the house.

On the side table is my P380 in its Uncle Mike IWB holster, as I wear it around the house and usually it's first choice when I'm outside the house, but I have my S&W 645 loaded with Bonded Remington 230-grain Golden Sabers and a reload... in the bookcase headboard... and I have my Charles Daly Tactical Semi-Auto 12-gauge with Remington 00 buckshot against the wall next to my chest-of-drawers... withing reach as I roll out of bed. I have a tactical light in the headboard as well. In the drawer of my sidetable is a web-belt with holster, 3 full magazine holders, and extra pouches for my light and cell phone if I have to venture outside checking out a "disturbance"... things that go bump in the night... it happens, and has.
