View Full Version : EDC knives?

It's been said that most gun-people are also knife-people. So, what's in your pocket?

I rotate 3 folders for my EDC. First up is a Hogue EX01 with a 3.5" blade of 154CM steel. It's got a button lock and a slide safety. Designed by Allen Elishewitz. This is my Go-To knife.
Next up is a Spyderco Manix 2. A 3.5 inch blade of 154CM steel wrapped in nicely gimped G10 handles.
The final knife is a 0350 Zero Tolerance 3.25" assisted opener. This stout blade is made of S30V steel and is built like that famous brick outhouse.

With each knife I get different advantages and trade offs. Each one rides in my left hand pocket (NOTHING else is in there but the knife) I consider them to be backups for whatever pistol or revolver I'm toting around.
Someone once said "A knife never runs out of ammo." They give me a handy tool and another option for self defense.

So, what's hiding in your pocket?

Too much stuff in my pockets already so this days I'm carrying a lightweight Kershaw Skyline and sometimes my ESEE Izula.

It's little but much more useful than it looks. The knife is little and useful too. :D

The M21-04G by CRKT with a 4 inch nitride coated spear point, flipper activated, hollow ground, "v" edged blade, 4 point carry G10 handle. Also in my left pocket with nothing else.

LaP,

Looks like you are a fan of the drop point blade shape unless the Hougue is a tanto style. You are right, each blade has something different to bring to the table. Havent found the one perfect knife that has it all for me.

you did it!

Always liked the sypderco.....they do it right from the multifunctional blade shape to handle shape ergonomics to the jimping. Always wished they had more clip mounting positions though. I am not good with quick opening with thumb studs or holes unless assisted opening is there to help.

I like the deep belly on the top knife's blade (cant remember the name of it sorry). That generates extra edge speed when cutting and looks bad *** too.

Please rate them for me as to which is your most favorite to least and why.

I'm a total slacker when it comes to taking along a knife and light. Fixed that this weekend so hopefully my Benchmade mini Stryker will be with me more frequently. At least it will be when I am wearing pants with a cargo pocket.

CRKT Sting fixed blade blade is 3 3/8" long . I got sick of carrying a knife in my pocket never seems like I could get it out fast and it was always in the way every time I reached in my pocket for anything other than the knife. The sting goes in a nylon covered plastic sheath that the knife snaps into .It came with a thigh rig but I adapted it to go on my belt from parts of the rig.

The middle knife, Hogue (they are also the handgun grip company) is my favorite at this time. It opens like smooth butter and then the lock snaps it in position. It handles very easily and every edge is rounded for a comfortable hold. The blade holds an edge very well and a Spyderco EdgeMaker puts a keen razor edge on it. The price was about $150 at Knifeworks.com.
The Zero Tolerence is a bit heavy in my pocket. It is an assisted opening knife that pops open with authority. The price was right at about $110. I had to have it.
The Manix 2 is my in-between blade. It fits my hands very well and the G10 has just enough texturing for a solid grip. The blade can be made scary sharp. I like that.:D Price was about $80 at Amazon.com.
I've got a bunch of other less expensive/ lower quality knives that I use occassionally, but these three just keep finding their way into my pocket.

I carried this for a long time. I try to buy USA made stuff but this knife was a pretty good value for this style. Not as well made as the aforementioned knives but it sat well in the pocket, had 2 position clip carry oprions and deployed like lightening with the emmerson wave feature. The steel was not all that though. I gave it away but kind of miss it. For my training the conventional blade shape is more practical so that is why I stopped carrying it.

Never would have thought that one was the number one. I wonder who makes that for Hogue.

I'm not a knife geek so I'm not sure if the mini Stryker is active or discontinued. I picked it up a last year or the year before. I don't exactly remember when. It looked good and felt even better so it picked me. It does have the nitrous assist. The box says made in USA.

I really like the Kershaw Leek and it's assisted opening system, but find them to be heavy for their size and the scales lack grip.

According to Allen Elisewitz, he designed it and Hogue did the entire production in-house. They plan on making more models in the future. For their first effort, I'd say they did an excellent job.
TACTICAL KNIVES did a cover story on this knife a few moths ago. After doing a little more research, I bought one and have been thouroghly pleased. I may be getting the Tanto version with their "G-Mascus" patterned handles. It looks great.

Elisewitz designs for other makers too. His stuff is straight forward IMHO--nothing crazy in design.

"fairly" is the op word. I have seen some great stuff from Fox and some pure crap. I heard the Italian army are going to carry knives with the emmerson wave feature now. Not sure if Fox is going to supply them or not or if it is the karambit style or not.

The top 2 knives are Kershaw, the top is assisted opening with a 3" blade, the middle one opens with a flick of the wrist and has a 3.5" blade, and the bottom one is a Benchmade pre production knife collectors knife number 979 out of 1000 that lost much of it's value when my wife thru the box and documentation away. It has a 3 inch blade. The top one is carried 98% of the time, the middle one I carry once in awhile since the blade is longer than 3" and not sure if it's legal everywhere, and the Benchmark mostly stays in a drawer.

I always carry the little red one and usually the middle one, Gerber Quick Draw (3" blade, assisted opening) as well. I got the Covert (Gerber F.A.S.T.) with the 3.7" blade and larger grip for more of a "fighting knife", but with little or no training, I hope to never need it for that. The little Swiss Classic "Variation" is handier to me than the others with the scissors. I use it a lot. the tiny blade is sharp enough to cut coupons at the stores and to get the foil/plastic cover off my wine bottles. Too bad it doesn't have a corkscrew, but that would make it too big. It weighs about 0.7 oz. and the others are 4.83 and 3.35 oz., from the top.

My knives are very adept at cutting foil off the wine bottles. It takes a fine pression instument to get just the right slice around the bottle top. I make sure my knives are always up to the job and I do performance tests as often as needed.;)

I slide the knife blade up from the bottom of the "foil" usually removing a small strip, and then just peeling it up and off the bottle, leaving nothing to capture and release wine after pouring.

I wasn't paying enough attention one time, and the new bottle of wine had a metal twist cap! OUCH! I had to resharpen the blade!

Yeah but, one way or another that top DID come off didn't it!!!?:D

Years ago while young and unprepared, I didn't have a corkscrew.... I used the head of a 16Penny nail to drive the cork thru and then enjoyed the fruit of the vine. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

These are what I usually carry though. The SOG Pentagon Elite is a heck of a knife, fast easy opening and closing. Not nuts about the blade shape but it works.
I really like the feel of the Fox & Hound fixed blade, always liked fixed blade knives over folders but of course folders are easier to deal with.
I'm embarassed with the leather sheath I made for it but it works and is 100 times better than what it came with. I'd love to get a good horizontal carry scabbard made for it someday.

That Bowie was my dads. I never saw it or knew that he even owned it. Going thru his stuff after his passing my ruthless, vulture like step mom who I liked and got along well until his passing allowed it to go with some of his other belongings for my sisters and I to have. My sisters and their husbands graciously agreed that I was the proper and just new home for it. I have no idea when he got it or any of it's history which is terribly sad but its in good hands now.
I do on occasion carry it even at work, no rules against knives at my PD.

Actually I just quickly grabbed a rag off my bench. It's no doubt Coco Bolo sawdust which stains really well. I thought it was cleaner than it was. I just don't have the artistic photographic capablilities of some here. I did contemplate taking them outside as everyone says natural light is better but it was wet out and I was feeling plumb lazy.

I have a drawer full of sharp objects, that I rotate when I feel the need to. Usually, I have a carbiner on my keys (kershaw, why I don't know), a multi-tool, a locking blade, and a non-locking blade on me at any given time. There was a thread I did some time ago called opened up the hurt locker, and it has a bunch of my stuff in it, there is more since, but you'll get the idea.

Believe it or not, this is going to be the first "real" knife I've carried (as opposed to a Swiss Army-type pocket knife).

The company where I work has a weapons policy that forbids a knife blade greater than three inches, which is one of the reasons I picked this knife. It also looked like a good "starter model" to me.

Any advice y'all would like to give? Something a little more advanced than "fold it up before putting it in your pocket."

Keep it sharp, don't abuse it, and maintain it once in awhile, you'll be good to go. Stainless isn't (worked with lots of water before, and even now have "stainless" blades that'll get some of the orange flakes on them).

I like the Spyderco H1 Pacific/Atlantic Salt - Rust Free knives.
http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=128
H1 steel is a PH steel, meaning it is a precipitation-hardened steel. Utilizing .1% nitrogen instead of carbon to harden the steel, it reaches a Rockwell hardness of 57-58rc. Spyderco uses H1 on its new C91 Pacific Salt model. All internal steel parts are treated as well making them impervious to rust and pitting and of course, salt. Those challenged by cleaning and maintaining their knives will find the Pacific Salt stays rust-free even if put away wet. The blade's hole is enlarged to 14mm for easier opening/closing with gloved, wet or cold hands.

I've got two of the Pacific Salt H1's and love both.

I have two Spederco's, one an all stainless Byrd knife, which replaces the old Endura that I semi-retired (carried that one in Bosnia, as we were not allowed to have personal weapons, or knives of any kind there). My wife and I were talking last night, about the decline of the pocket knife, and how it pisses me off. I find myself less trusting of someone without a knife in their pocket these days (though trust no one anyway). My Byrd knife is S30VM type steel I believe, and it has spotted on me. My Endura is AUS6 or AUS8 steel, and it won't take the edge it used to, but it has yet to spot on me. I just keep an eye on my blades, and oil as needed these days, it doesn't really bother me anymore. Besides, I have been known to carry carbon steel blades too.

I found a bait and tackle in the midwest that had two for like $300 + $15 shipping.
Called and told them now you have one!.
It's triple laminated stainless steel like a samary sword.
Super high quality

I got mine several years ago.

Super high quality, ya think it's worth 300 bucks? You use it much? Not that that matters to me. The cool factor and capability is worth at least 250 by itself. Maybe I'll put it back on the list. I think it's a must have myself!

I never use it - LOL.
It's a Super Mas Macho, have to have one before I die, thingy.
Plus being used in Resident Evil made it that much sweeter.
$300 bucks, is it worth it? I don't know.
Bragging rights I guess.
But the $205 price - you bet...

Update: That site says the blade is carbon!
There is a much cheaper carbon blade version.
It has to be Stainless Steel! Looks like they run about $400.
Sorry everybody!!!

My old standby is a Surefire combat light, model ??? the metal one, that I've had a long time. I recently picked up a Fenix PD31 that does a few more tricks. I had a Surefire gosh can't remember the models but the small one PD1 has the correlated edge on the front for hitting people. Guy at a gun show gave me a great deal. Brought it home, wife chewed me out for spending so much on a flashlight, but then took it and never gave it back. Wench!
I want one of them 500 lumen Milleniums but not sure why, big bucks and I could use it if the headlights on the van go out.
I think I might have enough in a slush fund to order that Kukri from Nepal. How can a man go on living without one of those. Even a half man, have beast in a wheeled contraption?

Flashlights are kind of like the old nuclear arms race, ya know? How many lumens are enough? My flashlight won't be bright enough until its a real weapon all on its own...kinda like a Star Wars laser blaster or something. Of course by that time the battery would probably be as big and heavy as a Wookie....

I meant justify taking money out of my weapon/ammo account
for a flashlight. I know you can crack someone in the head with one.
But my Hand Cannon / Edged Weapon account is sacred.

let me give you an example.

May I suggest the Spyderco Police 3 as your first proud EDC knife?
G10 handle done very well not too grippy not too little either.
over 4" reach on the blade
lock back so it is a sound folder
good steel
seats well in the pocket
lot of knife for little weight + or - 5 oz.
4 point clip versatility
needs a "wave" for auto opening upon deploy--so I fashioned on myself.

Okay... I'm big on form and function... simplicity and symmetry, etc. But these bizarre looking kniives... this one reminds me of a whacked out Woody Woodpecker... the original or OLD one, and just aren't attractive to me. Of course, we all have different tastes, and you are free to pick things like that for yourself.

I'm not really a "knife person" and I'm definitely not a knife fighter, but I like good-looking things... to me, anyhow. I want a sturdy, good-looking blade with simplicity in design and function. It has to be substantial and lock up solidly. Another MAJOR consideration is price. I don't put a premium on "name brand" and "uniqueness". Some of these knives cost as much as some of the guns I own! If it costs much more than $50, I'm not interested. I'm pretty free with my money and "waste" a lot, but $200, or $300, or even more... for a knife, just doesn't "float my boat", so more power to you if you can spend that much on a knife, but I can't see it.

People collect lots of stuff and that's fine, but I'm more into utilitarian stuff. I really got turned on by the kukris at KHHI ( http://www.khukurihouseonline.com/ ), and was seriously considering some of those but the choices are bewildering and so many that I don't know where to start. I really wouldn't USE one of those, so it would be a display kind of purchase that I really don't usually do. Indecision!

I DID order a "collectible" from the NRA... http://www.nrastore.com/nrastore/ProductDetail.aspx?c=5&p=HO+24695&ct=e

because that "turned me on"... being about the centennial of the 1911 being adopted by the Army as its official sidearm.

So, to each his own, but we all have our own tastes and pursue those things that interest us. So, blah, blah, and blah... just my opinion.

Carry on!

big knife for sure. I like the way they tried to take a machete and make it into a folder. Heavy but not that heavy for such a big blade. That knife could be awesome if they skeletonized the liner made them from titanium ect to cut weight and made more relief around the thumb studs for easier deployment of the blade. A little too big still for EDC IMHO

I just picked up a bear clawish knife... I like it. Now I have a few different neck knives to choose from when I head out. Think I am going to build myself a vest with velcro all over it for a holster and mag holsters and sheaths. That would be much better for mowing the grass.

Love your choice of knife but have to ask how the SB performs on webbing. Doesnt it catch on the belt webbing? Would a PB be a better choice. IOW have you tried that blade type out on that point of use?

I just got the Fallkniven F1 used by the Swedish pilots as a survival knife. This thing is sweet and very well constructed, I'll be using it for short camping and hunting trips near the water ( Florida is basically a gigantic swamp).

I paid $200 on ebay. They are not making the Rajah 1 anymore. But ebay has one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cold-steel-rajah-1-collectible-rare-last-one-have-/180722742051?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item2a13ea3323#ht_500wt_1413

May I suggest the spyderco police 3 for something with a little reach 4.25" blade and only weighs 4-5 oz. I added a wave feature to it. G10 handle lock back design, flat ground VG10 steel. Bawanna
09-28-2011, 01:34 PM
Yeah, I think I've looked at that one. I'm trying to stay 6" or under. I wear it with my civilian uniform or office attire on my left side about 7 oclock. Don't want it to be too huge but I dig stag handles too. It's just for stabbing and cutting the hand of someone trying to grab my gun. Some just wear folders on their left side for the same purpose but I can't even effectively pick my nose with my left hand so I struggle with a folder.

No rules about knives in the dept so I may just try my Khukri in a shoulder sling and just cut the hand off. We'll see how long that goes before there are rules about knives in the dept.

Knives are almost as addictive as guns. I think when we don't have enough marbles to gun shop, we resort to knife shopping for a quick fix. I have a drawer full of evidence of this and many here apparently do also as seen in pictures of knife piles.

True story, different strokes for different folks and a completely different stroke for Dietrich.

People have told me I have weird taste for so long that I've started believing them and feel the need for other peoples approval. Sadly I usually still get what I wanted or liked in the first place so it's kind of a waste of time.

I saw a T shirt the other day that said "I like me, and that's all that matters."

Profound when I ponder it. Is it a sin to wear a shirt that lies?

That's a nasty looking blade on that thing. Amazing what they get for some of these knives now days too.

I have a bunch of knives, it's like when you can't afford a gun you buy a knife to fend off the want pains.

I found the cure with a little help (actually a lot of help from Greg). Once I got my sheath made I've found it's perfect for my needs and I carry it everywhere.

Went to my son's graduation yesterday at a big event center. I didn't hear but wife said he asked if I had a knife in my pocket? I just rolled past. Had this on my belt, the Ruger 1911 on my belt and the PM45 on my ankle. Never know when bad guys will attack a granulation ceremony.

Up to a couple of months ago, this was my EDC combo. Now most of the time instead of the TP-9, I carry a 200DS Chiappa Rhino along with these two knives. I still carry the TP but it depends on what I'm wearing (shorts, tee-shirt and short sleeve cover shirt), generally just stick it in the waist band, no holster.

I try not to leave the house without my Gerber F.A.S.T. Draw... 3" spring-assisted blade... the half-serrated version. It's a backup to my CCW and a valuable tool. It cost me $30 at Walmart and now they're up to about $32, but very solidly built.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ6Z9yV1TlI&feature=related

I usually keep the F.A.S.T. Draw clipped in the top of my left pocket in case my right hand is busy... as in warding off an attacker or holding my pistol and grappling with an assailant.

I also have the F.A.S.T. Covert model with the 3.7" blade and a heftier grip, but I can feel that I'm carrying it... it feels huge, but more of a fighting knife... and inexpensive... relatively... under $40 on sale at the BX with 15% off and no tax, one time.

At the other end of the size spectrum I love this little beauty. Tiny little AG Russel neck knife. Sharpest knife I've ever owned I think. Right handy but I'm careful when and how I use it, don't want to mess it up.

I lost my EDC a couple weeks ago and was bummed. It was a Kershaw Ken Onion Blur 1670BLK. It's a pretty big knife and was stout as an ox.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/KevinJenne/1223111442.jpg

So yesterday, I bought another Kershaw, a little Ken Onion 1620 Scallion, a great little EDC that doesn't take up much real estate. Sharp as a razor with a untra fine point.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v385/KevinJenne/0614121615.jpg

Last night I found my Blur in my wife's Pathfinder :)

I traditionally like to look at, sharpen, and collect traditional knives, like Case, Buck, etc, but my EDC's are usually assited opening tactical-ish knives.... just like I carry semi-autos, but my real love is revolvers. Go figure.

Let me say that I don't really KNOW anything about fighting with a knife... only that I would do almost anything to avoid getting into one, BUT, I practice getting the right leg forward for longest reach for thrusting or slashing... try it... you don't want your weak leg forward... really limits your reach... and exposes your leg to slashes or kicks. If this was unclear, the leg on the knife-wielding side should be forward, knee bent, not locked... and your stance should be balanced over your two legs... ready for movement in any direction!

Again, try it... and think about how you would employ the knife. Knife fights can be NASTY! I wanna have my trusty Kahr... any of them... for a KNIFE FIGHT! If you're close enough to get slashed... Defense "Experts" say INSIDE 20 feet... it may be too late to start THINKING about drawing your weapon!

Those razor cuts bleed like crazy and don't heal well.

Those are some nice and/or wicked looking knives in the photos. I'm not a knife man myself, though. I could cut myself with a wooden chopstick from a Chinese take-out place. It's been a looong time ago, but I still remember how I cut myself every time I took my M7 bayonet out of its sheath. The M7 was double-edged and both edges were sharp! Now days, I just carry fingernail clippers. :o

Here is mine with the exception of my mini Swiss Army that I misplaced the other day. :(

http://img.tapatalk.com/c6e4d5f5-fd36-8452.jpg

The top two are Kershaw imports. The quality is great and I couldn't pass them up because of the price ($15ea)... and it won't sting so bad if I loose one. I'll get a nicer US made one later. The bottom one is a Columbia River. I really like that one, but it doesn't have assisted opening. The middle one is my favorite, and I really like the tip up carry after I got used to it (I will change the top one, but haven't done it yet).

Boxes beware! :D

I liked knives when I was younger (had a small collection) and then didn't carry one for the last 20 years. Recently got back into EDC and boy do I use them all the time! I didn't realize what an important tool I was missing.

Actually one is a closeup of the other so really not a bad thing.

I had a Columbia River similar to that and even though technically it isnt assisted opening it open fast and easy with the index finger on that little hump in the blade. They make some pretty nice knives.
