View Full Version : Chemical Burn Surprise

I got a chemical burn on my hand last night while cleaning my gun. I put on latex gloves before spraying G6 Crud Buster into the stryker channel of my CW9. Since I had the gloves on I blasted it pretty throughly while working the mechanism. Apparently the glove had split on my ring finger and pretty soon the skin under my ring was burning like a son of a gun so to speak. Dropped everything and went in and washed my hands and removed my ring. The skin looked like a heavy sunburn and the inside of my ring was shining like brand new. I think I'll upgrade to nitril gloves from now on.
Anyone else had trouble like this?

Rings and other jewelry can really be dangerous when working OR playing!
I would definitely wear better gloves and eye protection... and outdoors for sure! You don't want to breathe that stuff, either.
I'm glad you were near a water supply! All of those chemicals say something about keeping it off your skin, but you may not know how bad it can damage your skin!

alot of non cholorinated spray cleaners will take all the oil out of ur skin but I never read of anyone getting burns from non cholorianted spraycleaners. I never heard of G6 crud buster, so I can't say on that, but I always when cleaninbg my guns even with Hoppe's #9 and Brownells paste cleaner and all non cholorinated spray cleaners. Gooves just keeps my hands from having allthe oil taken out of them. Never had any of those cleaners effect my rubber gloves though.

I used some Shooters Choice bore cleaner once and got some on my hand and it burned pretty good for a while and also while using it with an old tooth brush it melted the plastic and dissolved the bristles......Yesterday while cleaning my sons Ruger 10/22 rifle I used some 3M non chlorinated brake cleaner and got some on the wood stock and ruined the finish in several places turning a short clean up job into a many hour stock refinishing project this week...It doesn't seem to harm plastic but it will damage wood finishes which has never happened before when using electronic spray cleaner which is milder and has no smell but I was out....I have accidently sprayed brake cleaner in my eyes before...:w00t:...trust me that wasn't any fun at all so I always wear safety glasses now....I always seem to learn things the HARD way...:o

i think I had mentioned that about getting these non cholorinatged cleaners on wood grips. Hoppe's willdo the same thing. Any good cleaner will work on a wood finish.. I ruined a nice setof Herrrettsw stocks off my J frame that my friend Bawanna refinished for me. lessons learned sometimes are yes indeed the HARD WAY.

Roger that...The most painful lessons are the ones where you do something really stupid and know better but do it anyway... Last week I was backing my crew cab pickup into a very tight parking space at the mall with a light pole behind it and I just bumped it with my rear bumper so I got out and looked at it and there was no damage so I pulled up some and the wife says...:blah:.:blah:.:blah:.. you're way out into the lane, You need to back up again so I did and hit the S.O.B. again, this time leaving a nice dent...Pi$$ed me off but I has nobody to blame but me...

Yep the shotgun deal was probably the dumbest thing I ever did but I'm going to claim being young and stupid as an excuse.... I'm a great deal older and hopefully a whole lot smarter now....As it turned out that was the first and last time I fired that old shotgun or any shotgun for that matter and I now have a MUCH greater respect for what one of those things will do...If you ever have to set one of those babies off in the house for self defence without hearing protection plan on on writing down everything that happened for the Police because you wont hear any of their questions for quite some time...:86:...:w00t:

About the truck, I don't know what it is about this pickup but I can't seem to judge parking distances in the thing other than it's the first crew cab I have ever owned and is about 20 feet long...In the front I when I think I'm about to hit something I'm really about 2 feet away and in the rear it's the opposite, From the drivers seat it looks like I got plenty of room but in reality will be right up on something...I'm blaiming that one on the wife...I should of had her stand between the pole and my rear bumper and backed up until she started screaming...

That should have been G96 Crudbusters Gun Cleaner. It's off the shelf at Bass Pro. I've used this cleaner before without gloves and like Jocko says even being careful it will take all the oil out of your fingers. Decided to use the gloves to protect by hands. The only thing I can think of is I had been out shooting and my hands had been very sweaty along with some bug repellant. Maybe they added to the chemical reaction. Better gloves are on the list for this week.

A little off topic, but I was out hunting & the skeeters were eatin' me alive. I had some "Off" in the truck. I put some on, the kind you rub on. It took the finish off of my Rem 870 shotgun.

Oh, yeah! I remember putting some OFF on while using my Panasonic cordless phone... about four phones ago... and it dissolved/melted the clear plastic over the LCD display!
Some plastics are more prone to that than others. CD cases are/were like that. I used lighter fluid for removing the price stickers' glue residue... before cellophane wrappers... mid-80's... in Europe... and some of the "jewel cases" melted a bit. It depends on the plastic.
