Well first you have to have a mission, then a plan, and it doesn't hurt to have a back up plan.
The mission: I recently acquired an early, carbon steel, K9. I really like the gun, but found it shot low for me. I figure I can live with it that way but would think out some other options.
The plan: After giving consideration to filing the front sight down, ordering a custom sight from Dawson, ordering a complete set of night sights (risking that they would correct the problem), and one other option (to be explained later), I stumbled upon an unused MMC adjustable rear sight on Gunbroker. I won the auction and have installed/tested the sight. It's a winner in my book: the K9 shoots to it's sights now, the sight is well made, and (IMO) looks decent on the gun:)

I did mention a back up plan. Actually, it was plan "A" but the gent had decided not to sell the item. He later contacted me with an offer. I had just won the sight auction, but felt this was an outstanding deal...and it's good to have a back up plan.:D
Here's the "back up plan":

A note here, I'm a retired Master Gunnery Sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corps. Now, while Marines always use the rank not the paygrade in conversation, the pay grade for Master Gunnery Sergeants (and their not so accomplished counterparts) is E-9. So, I have an affinity for Kahr's E9:cool:

Looks awesome Greg. You were able to use the factory front? Looks like it was born to be on that gun. Nice and clean.
So now in addition to being the smartest man alive we now have to salute you in passing?
I can't see what the backup plan is as the picture don't show but I got a suspicion I'll keep to myself till I know if I'm right.
Well drop my skivvies and call me daddy, I was exactly right. That's a darn nice backup plan for sure. I salute you.

Thanks Bawanna! Yes, the front sight works well with this sight. The sight is drift adjustable for windage (two small set screws hold it in place) and there is a click, adjustable screw on the right side of the sight for elevation. No salutes for me brother, but I did get a smoking (and very smooth) deal on the complete E9 upper and a slide stop (nice case as well). Spare parts, gotta lov'em, but I guess I'll have to have a shoot off to see which unit stays on the gun.
I do have a quick question for you boss: ever do any grip work with micarta?
Regards,
Greg

Dang, Greg, it's no wonder you're so handy and knowledgeable about so much!
I once wanted some MMC sights but they developed a bad rep and kind of disappeared after screwing a few guys with unfinished work and keeping their pistol slides! I was glad that I checked them out online... while trying to find them!
Nice looking setup there. Is the front sight Tritium and does the rear bar still glow? It looks like it's pretty bright in the light.

I worked on a piece of micarta that MW Surveyor sent me. I fit and shaped and he sanded and polished. It wasn't too bad to work with. I don't think it ended up being the color that he was looking for but was nice.
He sent a small piece of barb wire micarta that looks very promising. I've yet to order a large enough piece to make grips out of but hope to some day. I know the place was local to MW so if I can't find the name of the place he'll be my go to guy to find it.
What are you thinking of hangning micarta on?

Hey Wynn,
Thanks:) The sight has a little glow left to it, but I'm not too concerned by that. The front is non tritium for the moment, but I probably pony up for one in the near future. I'm sorry to read that MMC had develop some reputation problems. I had not worked with them since the whole PT Night Sights thing came to exist (The PT website doesn't work anymore, so I wonder if the company has gone under). My previous MMC sight was purchased in the mid 70's. It was the sight that put them on the map: a small foot print, fully adjustable sight for 1911s, that fit the factory dovetail and worked with the factory front sight (for those interested, here's a link to what that sight looked like: http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=191532 )
Bawanna,
I'm thinking some sand blasted, black canvas micarta would look good on the K9.

Greg

"Bawanna,

I got a K40 (early) and so far I've not found any differences in grip fitting. I could whittle out a set. Do you have the technology to do the sand blasting? That would be a brand new thing to me. Someplace around here I have a sand blast kit I used to use to clean up truck parts but not sure it would be the right kind of set up for blasting grips.
I'll see if I can find that place MW Surveyor told me about or perhaps you know of a source yourself.

Brother, I can do the sandblasting. What size raw material would you need? I'll shoot you an email to work out the details to commissioning a set of Bawanna Custom grips. Thanks!

That's a very clean looking sight.
I've been on the fence about picking up a K series but I think I'm sold now. I have the same issue with the sights on a couple of my firearms. Nice to know there is a fix for the Kahr.
