When ordering a new Kahr on-line what is the procedural order of things? Do you make a deal and place the order, then have the receiving licensened gunsmith fax or mail a copy of his FFL, or should things be done in the reverse order with the FFL being sent first? I thought he would just order it for me but he says he doesn't do that anymore but will allow use of his FFL. The other gunshop in town charges an arm & leg to order the gun direct.
The CM9 is beginning to show up on-line so thought I'd better start getting my ducks in line to receive one. Also, if the gun is available about how long does it generally take for all this procedure to happen? Been used to just walking in the store and buying the gun they have in stock so all this internet ordering is new to me. Thanks.

You have it correct there at first. I generally make sure I got my FFL lined up and ready. Then when I find the deal or place I want to buy it from I make the deal. Arrange payment. Your FFL will then fax his information to the seller who then sends the gun to him. Then you just do the paperwork and pay the transfer fee and your good.
I don't think any shop can order direct from Kahr, you have to go thru a distributor. Shopping yourself I'd go to like Buds or shop on Gunbroker etc.
The time frame depends on the sellers speed at getting it shipped, your speed at getting him the money and your FFL's speed at sending his info.
FFL's usually aren't near as anxious to get your gun as you are, neither is the seller. With my impatience I've gone thru a few FFL's who didn't move fast enough.

You can get the best price online and then shop for an FFL dealer at one of the large online auction sites that has FFL dealer lists and the prices... all by entering your zipcode and finding the closest, best priced dealer. I used Gunbroker.com and I believe Buds has an FFL locator as well. If a local dealer has to order it for you, he wants a profit and charges you tax. That's why you make the buying deal online and shop for a dealer to receive it and fill out the yellow form for you. He'll make the NIC call. You should be able to shop and get a fee around $20-$25. My FFL dealer charges $25 total for that. The gun range/store dealer wanted $50 + NIC $5 + tax, or close to $60! So, I shopped for an FFL dealer. You may want to do the same because your friendly dealer would like to make up for a lost sale on his fee... some more than others.
You can get this info online at the sites, too, how to buy a gun and get it delivered to your chosen FFL dealer.

I could only find one FFL in my city and he took it without complaint. At first I was unhappy with the $60 charge, but after watching him fill out forms for 30 minutes I'd say he earned it. He said he doesn't make money with it but will be damned if he'll allow the state (CA) to discourage gun purchases.
The state must be unhappy with him because they have harassed him for months with auditors sitting in his office going through all his forms, etc. It's quite a story, but then he specializes in "black guns", which I understand are on the very edge of the law.

When I ordered from Davis and Jet Guns (formerly Bud's in Paris KY) they already had my FFL's info. You might ask if they already have someone from your area on file when you order.
Wow $60 for the transfer? Mine only charges $20, and i've heard of lower than that. In Kansas now we just have to show our CCW permit and fill out the paperwork and they don't call in on us anymore. Oh I see you are in Kalifornia comrade. I imagine they do everything possible to foul up internet gun purchases.
What state are you in Allen? (If you don't mind sharing) Seems like it's easier to get done in a gun friendly state.

I order from Buds Police Supply (Retired Military), and my FFL is already on record there. No problem and quick shipping after payment.

Hi Tom,
I live in Oklahoma just over the line from Kansas where I grew up. The gun shop in Kansas will order a gun for me and ship it to my FFL in Oklahoma and since I'm ordering from out of state they don't have to charge sales tax. The last time I checked I was told the price for the CM9 was $430 but haven't been able to decide between the CM and the PM. Notice Bud's has the CM for $420. Don't know if it's worth a little difference to be able to drive a few miles to talk to the ordering shop in case things go haywired (Murphy's Law usually enters everything I do). The local gun smith told me last spring that he'd handle the transfer for $10. Hope he will stay with that. He's done gun repairs for me in the past so maybe he's helping me out on the fee.

Another vote for Bud's. I put my CM9 in the basket, chose my FFL, paid, and it was there in 2 days. Paid my $20 FFL fee, and was out the door.

I used Bud's as well. Tip: use a "preferred FFL." You don't have to call these FFLs ahead of time. You can just click and buy, done. Your FFL should call you once they have received the weapon and are ready to sign it back out to you.
If you have a waiting period in your area, then you may want to call the FFL ahead of time anyway. You might be able to fill out the 4473 ahead of time and burn some of the wait time, possibly. Florida has a waiting period for handguns, but people with a CWP are exempt, so I don't have to worry about that anymore.
Note the FFLs that charge high fees often do so because they don't like transferring guns from other dealers. I wouldn't recommend dealing with them if you can avoid it, because they'll probably give you the stink eye the whole time. I deal with a local pawn shop. Really nice people, and $25. I've transferred about four guns through them, all from Bud's. They pretty much know me by now, lol.
