Ok, I'm in a search for a 1911, the choice used to be a ruger LS1911, Citadel, Springfield Ranger Officer and a STI Spartan. Money is of essence, the Ruger are hard to find, I've seen one and they look great, I've read nothing but good stuff about them. So I have narrow it down between the RO and the STI Spartan, I'm tilting toward's the Spartan mainly cause is a couple of hundred $ less, I know the slide and the frame it's made in the Philippines, the inters are made by STI. I don't know about there warranty or how the costumer service is. This is for range use, I may do some matches (IDPA) I have a PM9 for EDC, also I would like it in a 45acp but they have it in a .9mm which the ammo is cheaper.It just seem like if it's a 1911 in a 9mm something is a miss, :blah::blah:
Any input would be appreciated, I know some of you have STI's, even though there more expensive than the one I'm looking at:typing::7:

I have four 1911's and among them are a SA Lightweight Loaded 5" and an STI Escort. I don't think you can go wrong with Springfield or STI. Both companies have excellent CS. I say that while my STI is in Texas for a small problem, but I have every confidence that it will be made right.

I think the most important part of a 1911 is getting a good standard GI type frame, from which you can start building your custom masterpiece the way you want it. Nothing wrong with buying an inexpensive pistol and upgrading it as you are able.
My 1911 is a standard sized stainless Springfield that's been totally reliable with ball, hit or miss with HP ammo, but I've done little work to it. I think perhaps doing a little work to the feed ramp area would help with the HP ammo feeding problems. Worse thing about it is it has those little GI type sites that are near useless to my aging eyes. After things calm down some in my life, I hope to be able to pick up an officers sized 1911 myself. Will probably find something inexpensive and build it as I go.

My Spartan9 is my first 1911, but I've loved it so much that I currently have two more 1911's on order. Cost of ammo on the 9 is what sold me. HUGE cost savings if you shoot a lot, which I assume you will. The Spartan9 is one of my favorite guns I've ever owned. The ONLY misfeed I had with it was with my reloads, which I typically build at max COAL, so one might have been slightly long. One misfeed, w/ a reload, and round count into the thousands. LOVE this gun. Since it's normally dirty, I don't have many pics of it, but here's a cheesy pic I took on March 29th for the 100th anniv of the 1911. I don't think you'll be disappointed w/ the STI. Worth every penny, and many more IMO.

I heart Spartans. 9mm, 45, whatever it takes. =) Just the IDPA legal mods for these two. One thing I would suggest if you make no other changes is to get some good fiber from Brazos. It's cheap enough to get a foot of each color and find which one works best for you. I like the yellow the best, but that could be because my indoor shooting glasses are also yellow tinted.

I'd not hesitate to buy a Ruger, sight unseen.

OTOH.... I've been outrageously blown away with the quality of the Caspian receivers I've gotten, so far four this year. There is something to be said about building your own. Hard part is the barrel. The rest is easy peasy.

My RIA full size has been flawless and the price was good ($385 now at Buds now but I paid about 20 dollars more). It's bare bones basic but I cant complain one bit. Bought some new Houge grips I will try out in the next week or so.

How is the recoil difference between the two, I know that they are two completly different caliber. I used to have a 1911 that got stolen and I don't know anyone with one, right now I own a g26,PW9, PM9,LCP.380 and a 1988 Sig Sauer P-226 that was made in West Germany, that's when they were made right, never had a single problem, I just don't like going from double to single action specially going fron a 12# pull to a 3-3/4, I don't shoot it much, I'm trying to sell it...so since you have one of each you are the "THE MAN", which one do you like most....PS: I love those grips....WOW:hungry:,,:phone:

I'll be honest w/ you, I'm horrible at describing triggers. I like it, but that's about all I can say. It's completely different than the Kahr trigger of course, but nice just the same. No idea what the pull numbers are. :cool:

But your ok with a 1911 without doubt. I've heard alot of good about the Rocks if your budget concious and you can upgrade a little at a time if you feel the need. Other than some decent sights you might be happy as is.

You aren't kidding about "wearing on me" thing, hell I have had dreams about it, the only GS that carries STI it's about an hour and a half, near the North Carolina border and they don't have any in store, they're on order Dawson has then in stock??. Right now I'm hoping the Sig P-226 would sell and if it does I would have enough to intertain the though of maybe getting the Trojan :eek:. It's a Regent. It's a good price, but I would pobably just to with a Rock Island in that price range; their support is supposed to be top notch.

I think as you say it was a great place, maybe back in the 40's and for the brief period when Ronnie was running the place. Sadly just too much for one man to fix in such a short time.

Eklipto is in SC so he's probably ok.

FWIW that Range Officer has appealed to me since I first laid eyes on one. One of the detectives here was pondering getting one, so far it hasn't happened but maybe some day.

AHHH! I love that bad boy too...STI does not do business in Commifornia either...If the RO's price $810.00+ would be close to the STI $639.71 shipped I would really be a basket-case. Right now I'm debating between a .9mm or 45acp, 1911 of course....choices, choices :confused:

Really no choice to be made there. A 1911 is a 45. Anything else is a poser.
I can see a 10mm easily, a 38 Super on a good day but a 1911 in 9mm thats a large body of water to cross.

Course this is just my personal instigating faster fingers than brain speaking. If a 9 is what you seek, by all means GO FOR IT. I'm starting to get a little impatient.

+1 On the RIA 1911. I have the GI model and it's been 100% from the first shot. The last 5 mags I shot out of it during break in where rapid fire as fast as I could pull the trigger. The gun sure got hot but never missed a beat.
It is pure 1911 fun to shoot.

I saw it, didn't realize it was your first 45! Wow this calls for some celebration of some sort. I suspect you soon find out what all the 1911 hype is all about, if you haven't already.

Congrats Rainman. It's an addiction. I blame my addiction on Kahrs... bear with me and I'll explain.

I was always a Glock shooter, but ended up wanting something thinner for carry and looked to the PM9. Loved it. Then realized how much better I was with a single stack, bye-bye went the G34 and then came an STI Spartan 9 1911 for pistol competitions. Now, I just recently picked up this beauty below, and am looking daily for a vintage USGI 1911, I've already decided that I want both an original M1911 and a M1911 A1, I've also got the Colt ANVIII on order (ANVII below). There's a couple others I want too, but they're further down the priority list. Addicted.
