I recently purchased a used 2005 CW9, with intentions of converting it to a "covert". After putting 300 flawless rounds through it I figured it was ready to chop.

I took some pics along the way. I thought I'd try my first photo tutorial, in case someone else might be considering chopping there's. It's really not that hard, as you will see.

The first pic is just the magazine overlaying, to get an idea for the first cut.

Here is the first cut. I worked very slow and used the grip texturing as my guide. I figured I'd cut it long and sand the rest. This gave me plenty of room to work with.

After a lot of sanding

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/chorizoisgood/kahr3.jpg

I decided I want the magazine as flush as possible, and I also wanted mag well cut outs. So that worked out nicely together. I used a washer as a guide for my dremel and sanding drum.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/chorizoisgood/kahr4.jpg

And even more sanding, starting at 180 and finishing at 600 and a 3M extra fine pad. I also added a new bevel inside the mag well.

Good to go, it now resides in an "Uncle Mike's #3, right front pocket. I'm going to pick up a multi tool pouch to carry a couple 6 round mags. Still shoots great, both 6 and 7 round mags. And I will admit to running it a bit dirty.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn237/chorizoisgood/kahr6.jpg

I'll admit I was a bit nervous but I think it went well. It actually wasn't that bad, I just took my time. If your thinking about it, all I can say is go for it. It's not really that hard.

looks great, love it when someone actually mods a gun for ease of use versus worrying about "stock" or about resale value.

Sure wish that you guys would quit posting stuff like this. Since I held a PM9 yesterday have been giving this mod some real serious thought for my CW9.

Very nicely done.

So the idea is to have a longer barrel and sight radius for their benefits and a short grip for better concealment, right?

That would seem to be the case .

I have an SA XD SC 9mm , w a 3" barrel .

I shoot it real well , love the fit , is a relatively decent EDC size but have been thinking lately that a longer barrel w the resulting longer sight radius is in my future .

AND I've had an itch for a .45 !

So today at the range we rented an XDm .45 w a 4.5 barrel and it was real nice . With the longer barrel and the additional weight I didn't notice much diffference in the recoil at all . And it is easy to shoot accurately .

So in the worl of how do I justify this ? , the answer is I get a .45 AND a more accurate piece . How can I refuse myself ?

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I'm really happy it turned out as well as it did.
And yea, it's all about the concealability of the grip. Plus I get the added sight radius with a bit more recoil control.
I have found though, that I need a different pocket holster. The Uncle Mike's is a bit too loose in some pockets. Anyone have any recommendations, I'd prefer synthetic and slim, maybe something different than a Superfly for a change.

Since PM45 is illegal in CA I was thinking about getting a P45 and cutting it down. I'm guessing the longer barrel length will conceal the same as the shorter. If I am to do this it has to be before mid-December when the P45 certification expires. The new certification requires LCI and mag disconnect.

Now you have me thinking what a CW45 would be like if it was chopped to PM45 grip size. I have the pistol and holster, but would need a mag or two.

Load up the truck Old Lincoln, move out of Beverly. You deserve better than that place. I know you been thinking about it.
We got enough moving up our direction but we got room for you guys.
I know you were talking someplace warm, whereever, just make it someplace out of CA. I hurt for you.

Just wait until "Hollywood" designs a really "safe" gun... like they depict bombs in the movies with blinking red light and a beeping countdown-timer... for something you don't want anyone to notice or find!

Then there was that episode of "Jag" where the troops were moving across the field in the dark with BRIGHT GREEN-GLOWING eyepieces! Spooky, but hardly stealthy... Hollywood!

If I move too far from Hollywood I don't think the studio would helicopter me in when we have a shoot. Have to keep in range of whatever that fancy thing is.

Oops, for a minute there I thought I was Secret Agent O'Dell.

I use a horizontal cell phone pouch that a 7 round magazine will fit in. With the pistol carried mexican under a tucked-in polo shirt...Total urban camoflage.:D

That's a cool conversion. I like the idea of converting a CW45 to covert as well.

I'm guessing you have to curl your pinky underneath the magazine? Or is there still room for a full grip? How is the recoil?

Wonder how the CW45 covert would handle with a two finger grip, pinky under? Would you kinda have a PM45 at the price of a CW45 plus some labor?

The grip is now the length of a CM9, so no, pinky curl, yes. As for recoil, feels the same as before the conversion. There's a bit more mass than with a CM, so I'd imagine it's a bit less if compared to that.

I just did this cut as well, and I found that the material responds really well to a sharp woodworking plane (not so well to files), so after sawing I approached the final length by shaving the grip on a block plane clamped upside down in a vice.

Incidentally I also found that the A & G spacers are rough on files and blades and really need to be worked with sandpaper.

After seeing your post I decided to go for it and cut down the grip on my CW9. The first cut was easy (hacksaw) but the sanding took a little while. I started the sanding with 180 and finished with 600. It came out great. I put back the agrip and trimmed down to fit the new handle. I took it to range and it shot great. Now I’m thinking of selling my PM9.

Looks rather nice...kinda reminds me the way my XD45 Compact looks like only it is in the blued version with only one exception. My XD45 compact holds 10 rounds with thr flush fit magazine.
I haven't seen many of those around at any of the dealers or gun shows over the past few years.

You need a remora holster! I just got mine a month ago and it is made of the super grippy synthetic material. It works perfectly for pocket carry and fits my cw9 well. I also use it iwb, and it sticks in place better than some clip on holsters i have used in the past. For 30 bucks you cant go wrong. And plus they have a size specifically for the medium frame kahr CW9 or P9. Just check out their website, they work as advertised.

This looks very interesting. Your came out awesome! I am now considering doing this to my P9.
If I end up making my P9. A covert, how do I get the mags to flush fit? Do I just switch to PM9 magazines?
How did you measure in order to determine were to make first cut on the grip and how long the final grip needed to be?

The first cut was up to the were the texture start on the bottom of the grip. After that I used 180 sand paper. I would sand for a little while and check to make sure the grip was even. I continue sanding until I reached the 11th dimple on the front and 16 dimple on the back of the grip. I also used a PM9 magazine. I would insert the magazine to see if it clips in. When the magazine clip in I start to use the 600 sand paper to smooth out the grip.

alot of talent on this forum. alot.. quite a few guys have made this covert mod with great success. the great one posted his first grip stipplying job and it is awesome. he has posted many grips he has made for members and they are out of sight. He can even make grips blindfolded, course they don't fit but never the less he can do it. I marvel at his ability to refinish my herretts J frame stocks with a bottle of walnut stain in front of him and yet the grips came out all Pink. He is amazing to say the least.:banplease:

Now all you have to do is chop down the muzzle end about a half inch! :biggrin1:

Seriously though that looks pretty sharp for a hack job. Nice finish work!
