They had a thing going where you could make 4 payments on the USCCA Self Defense Shield, so I decided to buy a month, get all their literature on it, and compare it to my Homeowners policy. It was $51 for the middle level protection. You get a few extra videos and PDF files with it, no big deal. I have heard stories of the outrageous cost of a good defense attorney, $30,000 and up, so it might not be a bad deal. Anyway, I have a sense of comfort that I didn't have before. Not that I'd be reckless or more prone to get in a fight, but more like I have one less thing to worry about. Maybe something that might cause me to hesitate a moment while thinking over the justification and get shot in the meantime.
I guess you pick your own lawyer in criminal court, and they will provide one in civil court. They want you to go ahead and get a lawyer retained or agree to work with you should you ever need it. The attorney they suggested for my area is, a state congressman, past president of our 2nd admendment society, very active in all areas and pro gun activity, and I would love to have him represent me, but I doubt he has time, so I sent a note asking him to recommend someone.
Having a lawyer on call is not a bad idea for any of us. I've just never got around to it, I bet a lot of us are in the same boat. I'll let you know my opinion of the insurance, and if I think it's a fair value or not.

I both joined and took the Defense Shield on June 6th. So far, 60 days later, NOTHING has arrived in my mailbox. I called at 30 days and confirmed I was in the database. They said "give us two more weeks".

Dang, guess I won't have anything to compare with my homeowner's policy.
Do you regret joining? I feel a little better knowing I'll have some backup if the cops or DA give me a hard time. I sure don't feel gun happy, like I'll be looking for trouble or anything, but kinda feel that someone has my back now. I still hope and pray that I never get into a confrontation, and never have to use the insurance. Kind of like my car insurance, hope I never have to use that, but it's handy to have if you need it.
It seems like it did take awhile to get my first issue of the magazine, maybe a couple months or so. But am getting it every month now.
