View Full Version : Carry while mowing?

Just got done mowing the lawn. Was carrying my almost 40 year old S&W snubby .38 special loaded with Critical Defense with Hogue rubber grips in a OWB Glaco. I always carry while mowing. Do you? If so, what do you carry?

You wouldn't want to carry anything real expensive or new because you'd potentially get a lot of sweat on it.

I've gotta admit that I'm past feeling the need to carry a weapon when mowing the lawn or hauling the trash out to the curb. But I live in a "safe", residential neighborhood, lawn takes me <45 minutes to mow, and garage door to curb for the trash is about 100 ft of driveway. Your mileage may vary.

I carry a High Life tall boy in the tractor cup holder and change it out every 10 laps or so...I don't normally CCW while mowing, I'm more afraid of being hit by lightning (For some strange reason lightning hates riding mowers and tractors and many have been hit while mowing...) I figure if a BG wants to take on a bush hog then go ahead, make my day...

Nope, same mileage. Safe area, doesn't take long. It's just comforting knowing it's there. Plus, it gives me a reason to clean it!

Here in the Tucson area, the standard "yard" is something like 20 tons of crushed rock. Mowing is not an issue anymore . . . much to my relief after mowing more than an acre when we "lived" in New Jersey.

Needless to say, carrying in New Jersey was not very practical.

You could still mow the rocks if you miss it. Just take the blade off. :D

I carry anytime I`m outside my house.A neighbor has some dogs that are darn near wild sometimes. They have advanced on me and were getting their nerve up until I pulled out my PM9 and said loudly,"All Right, which one of you mother#%$&@*% wants to die first?"Their whole demeanor changed abruptly,as if they suddenly realized they had lost any advantage they might have had.Other people have had trouble with them since that day but they haven`t approached me again.Between that and the fact that a new neighbor has moved in and breeds pit bulls [he says for sale but everyone else says he also fights them] pretty much ensures that I will always be carrying when I`m on that John Deere.Or off it for that matter.

Yup.
I'm kind of a stickler for triggers on a gun.
My S&W 629 has an action job and over-travel adjustment.
It's just plan amazing.

Also have a stock Sig Sauer P220/45 and P239/357.
Both have really nice SA/DA auto triggers out of the box.
But for an auto, I must say my Kahr MK40 Elite is in a class by itself.

Interesting.....when I lived in New Jersey, and I find your quote marks appropriate, I did go armed while mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, and anywhere else beyond a foot and a half of my front or back doors. Fortunately, due to time and profession that was acceptable.

I do appreciate Tucson front yards. Tucson is one of the four places I've long had on my short list for retirement since forever.

I've also got a P239 but mine is in 9mm. It's my favorite trigger so far, but the T9 is quickly taking over. I love the smooth trigger pull on the Kahrs.

Come on down. We have a lot of ex-LEO's at the nearby Pima Pistol Club, my favorite shooting range.

House prices are a very low here right now, so if you can swing it, this might be a good time to invest in your future. :)

I had my P380 Inside Belt carry... outside the jeans, though, along with a reload while I was on MY John Deere this evening. I also shut the garage door and stay vigilant when I'm out in the yard.

This way you could ride the rockin' chair on the deck with a proper shotty while this does the work.

Truthfully, glad I don't need to be, or feel the need to be armed 24/7.

I open carry while mowing or doing anything outside at the farm. What pistol, depends on the mood I'm in, could be my little Buckmark .22, might have been my Taurus 4" 66 .357, except I gave that to my son since he got an apt. I suppose it'd be my Taurus .44 special until I get something else. Kind of eyeing that Taurus model 608, 8 shooter in .357. I like Taurus for that kind of thing. If it gets dinged up it's not like screwing up an heirloom. And 8 shots of .357 otta take care of about anything I'd run into out there. Used to be a lot of feral dogs out that way, but they tapered off a lot since they paved my road. Guess the city folk think it's gotta be dirt road to dump a dog off on and that's fine with me, except for the dumping off the dog in the first place, Makes me feel like first shooting the dog, then the owner.
A friend had middle aged gal dump off a small cockapoodle type dog right down the road a little bit, and he got out his gun and shot it while she got back in the car, she had the nerve to start raising hell about it, "oh you shot my poor little fluffy" and my friend said "Well lady what did you think was gonna happen to it? We aint the freaking humane society, and btw, I got your tag number and gonna call the Sheriff soon as I can get to the phone." She shut up and peeled out like her a$$ was on fire. Wish I could have seen that!

With all the options available to folks there is no need to be putting a dog out on the side of the road. Those people should be horsewhipped.I`ll kill an animal if I feel the need to protect myself but I`ll be damned if I`ll be cruel to one. Those that treat animals cruelly have something dead inside of them. They are to be shunned.

I agree about harming animals. It's just wrong. If I'm gonna eat it, then no problem, but I won't torture one like that. Not that I've eaten dog before. That I know of... I do travel to Costa Rica fairly often, so I've probably eaten dog and cat.

Back to cutting grass, I stick with my normal wardrobe. PM45 on the ankle and depending on the day or conditions the Cbob on the hip. Last week I had a good shot at a huge rat but I discovered quickly that the ankle rig on the mower isn't very quickly accessible. I suspect the Cbob will be on the hip more frequently.

at the risk of being labled paranoid, or thought of as living in a "dangerous neighborhood"..... yes I carry when I mow...I also carry when I eat, when in my office, when I drive, while I work in the field, at church, at social events, and everywhere else... except the very, very few places I am required to go (court house in particular). As far as mowing, why would you be any less likely to be approached by a thug with bad intentions at that time? Actually, while mowing I have had more occassions to dispatch copperheard and coral snake than most other times.... but I live outside the "city limits" where it's considered not only acceptable, but the proper thing to do with them critters in the yard. And, I will go another step further and defend the sentiments of themanski concerning dumped "pets". Those of us that live on the outskirts have no obligation to take in or care for the sick, decrepit animals that the "city folks" seem to think they can dump on our property. We have our own pets to care for, and do not need the fleas, ticks, mange and diseases dumped in our yards by those inhumane, uncaring city people. In the country, our "humane society" is simple.... the city folks dump them in our yards, and we have to put them down.....as humanely as possible. When mrs surv and I moved into our current (and in my opinion last) house in 1985, we were still considered "out in the country", and for nearly 10 years we had to endure constant pet dumping. Those that were nasty sick got put down pretty darned quick. A few that were healthy (a pair of blue tick hound puppies come to mind) were found homes. Dog packs....aka ferral dogs... get dispatched asap, as well as ferral cats. We ain't the city's humane society out here in the country.

You do what you gotta do!

Your post Mr Surveyor reminded me of why I carry alot of times even though I'm probably ok. When I'm on the lawn mower or anyplace far as that goes, my ability to run and / or escape are negligible at best. Actually I'd have a better time on the lawn mower than the chair.

In the fight or flee scenario I usually have to go with option 1 as would most derelicts, the aged, or disabled (think Jocko after a icecream ride).

I guess just cause you can't run it don't mean you gotta roll over and play dead.

itxi, not sure what you thought I found amusing. I can't stand people that dump animals out in the county thinking that those of us that live there are going to provide them a home. When my dad raised cattle we lost young calves to these starving animals, and one of my current neighbors has lost many lambs. I've personally been threatened by feral rottweilers, and other large breeds, and was damn glad I had a gun on me, a shot into the ground sent them running. I probably should have dispatched the rottweilers myself before they could hurt some small kid getting off the school bus or something. It does no good to call the humane society or the law or anything, as they won't come out and spend any time looking for these wild dogs, so the farmers have little choice but to dispatch them as quickly and humanely as possible. If you think I'm cruel of find this amusing, then that I guess I'll just have to be on your sh*t list. That's just one of the unpleasant sides of living in the county. We never asked for these dump off's and do as we deem necessary to protect our livestock and children. I have tried to find home for some of the friendlier little dogs, but 99% end up at the pound and get gassed.
I still would have liked to seen the woman's face after her dog was killed, how in the hell could she be so indignant over what happened after she did what she did. What I'd really would have liked is to be able to slap the crap out of her for dumping it in the first place. I do hope the guy turned her tag number in, but I doubt if anything ever would have come from it. Pehaps my wording made it sound like I thought the incident was funny, I did not. Amusing is not the word I'd use, more like surreal or incredulous or something. How can you dump a dog like that, then gripe about what happens to it? I believe that the landowner also told the lady to spread the word among her city folk friends that this is what happens to the vast majority of the dump off's they seem to think they can just drop off in the county and forget about. I've taken in my share of strays, as a boy, every dog I called "mine" was a dump off. It just gets to a point where you can't take everything in. This is not a sport, not hunting, just defending livestock. I will admit I did hunt a dog down once and kill it after it killed and ate part my "pet" calf I was raising bottle feeding. Damn I was mad. That dog was vicious and not afraid of humans and needed killing before it hurt someone.

A good holster that I like a lot for mowing or other dirty work is my Fobus paddle. It's ugly and it's not comfortable to sit in the car with it on but I don't care if I beat it to hell. It was only 20 bucks; and I can, and have, thrown it in the dishwasher.

This is what happens to a lot of those dogs that get dumped out in the country. If no one takes them in and the pound doesn't get them, they turn into feral dogs that will prey on livestock or anything else they can get, like your cat or something.

Troule is when I mow I generally wear the least I can get by with. The pants I generally wear wont hold up my Sp101 much less anything larger. I suppose I could just cut off some overhauls but I was seriously thinking about some sort of vest with a holster built in on the chest and a pocket for some speed strips or speed loaders and maybe even a sheath for a knife. Yeah it would be much simpler just to wear different pants BUT part of the idea behind the vest thing is it would be something I can keep ready to go and just grab anytime I wanted something on me whan I stepped out.

As far as wardrobe goes for mowing,I wear my Daisy Dukes with a tee shirt. That way, whatever I`m carrying, whether it`s my PM9 or Glock 30,rides comfortably in a Crossbreed IWB holster.I live in a remote fishing village in a county that has a leash law.It is generally ignored here and the local sheriff`s dept.does nothing to enforce it.Their normal response time ranges from 20 to 45 minutes so we pretty much depend on ourselves for protection. The state patrol is good enough to send a trooper down periodically for the sole purpose of writing traffic tickets.Got to keep that cash flowing into the government ya know.First things first.Fortunately, most of the dogs roaming around are friendly Labs and Goldens but we do see our share of feral animals.I don`t think the Humane Society knows how to get down here.

If you can't depend upon your local LEOs for anything, then you really need to be prepared. If those feral dogs pose a threat and no one will do anything about it, then you have to take matters into your own hands.

On a second note, aren't Daisy Dukes really short jean shorts? Or am I thinking about something else. I don't really want to think about you pushing a mower in short shorts.

Fair enough. I certainly don't condone dumping animals and I understand they can become a problem. I did take your wording to mean you found an incident involving shooting a small, helpless dog funny. Obviously you didn't, so I apologize for my outburst. I have a thing about cruelty to animals and can quickly get touchy about it.

Realizing of course that it's unacceptable, I personally feel it would have been more appropriate to shoot the owner/dumpee.

The only time I dont carry is at work (not allowed to) but I do cary to and from work ,my weapon just gets locked in a lock box hidden inside my locked truck. itxi, you may have missed it, but I said something similiar as you just stated in my first post that you found offensive, I had said something to the effect that I'd shoot the dog, then the owner. The older I got out there on the farm, the less I shot to kill, mostly a warning shot into the ground. One of the biggest heartbreakers, was someone dumped off a big ole black lab. You know labs are among the friendliest dogs around, and yet here was one just skin as bones snarling at me. It knew what guns were, cause as soon as I pulled my pistol he was off and running, thank god, I did not want to put that old feller down. But I wouldn't have taken it in, not knowing if it was rabid or what was wrong with it. Now that was one I wish I could have found the dog dumper and beat him till he was about half dead. Dumping an old hunting buddy like that just cause he got old.
I've had old dogs get sick and gonna die that I had to put down myself, that takes a lot of getting over. I started doing it when I was 12 or 13, so Dad didn't have to do it. It broke his heart worse than mine. Only time I ever saw him cry was when he had to put old Bosco down, and I swore I wouldn't see that again. He was getting old and soft like I am now. We were dirt poor farmers and didn't have money to take a dog to the vet to be put down. I think I saw a vet come around once, when all the cattle were sick and Dad didn't know what to give them, the vet told him what to do and Dad went and bought the meds and gave em shots. We still lost one maybe two head. Dad grew up on a dairy farm so he knew most the cattle diseases and doctored them himself but this one he hadn't encountered before. We were dirt farmers, but dad bought a dozen head of calves each spring and fed them out and the sold beef to our family and friends. You city folks might think we are cruel and inhumane, but we did as we had to do to get by. Nowadays are different, we do have money for vets, and spay and nueter, get the shots, and all the responsible things a pet owner does. Back then there wasn't money for such luxuries.

Personally, I prefer to mow in my Abrams M-3c Tank Mower. Switches between modest 15mm cannon to sprinkler with a flip of a switch.:D

Gotta get me one of those Abrams mowers....

Carry ALWAYS.

Then only time I don't is in the sheriffs office when I need to go there.

I stay out of trouble so I don't go to the court houses.

Unless there's a metal detector I don't say a word.

Otherwise I'm never without it.

that's the DUKAKIS PRESIDENTIAL MODEL. Since his run at the presidency ended up in abject failure, you just don't see that mower out and about much.

A guy was volunteering at a bicycle race this past weekend, Saturday 10:00am
He was parked on the side of the road with an ice chest of water for the riders.
Nice neighborhood on the edge of town, groups of cyclist riding by regularly.
Police officers directing traffic 1/2 mile north and south of him at intersections.
He was robbed at gunpoint by two guys driving a stolen car.

A friend of mine was mowing his yard a few years ago. He's an engineer with a major oil company and lives in a very nice neighborhood. He carried the clippings around to the alley and when he came back to the front of his house there were two guys in his garage stealing his weedeater and some of his tools. They took off when he yelled at them, but the situation could have just as easily turned into a robbery/home invasion.

There are no safe time or places.

If I have pants on I have a gun on, even if it's only a PM9 in my pocket.
Since I mow the yard while wearing pants, yes I'll be armed.

I have carried mowing the lawn on the Tractor but don't make a habbit of it. Live in a pretty quiet area where you can almost hear the grass grow, and I've only had to threaten the tractor once with violence. Since then it's been well behaved.:D

yep. If I'm awake and not at work, I'm carrying. When working in the yard it's the XDm 9 Compact 3.8 on the hip. It resists sweat better than the Kimber.

I think we're easily entertained. I installed a truck air horn on my riding lawn mower that will wake the dead also. Probably don't need a gun anymore, hit the button on that thing and the whole world wakes up.

I toot at the neighbors when they drive my and wife and kids will run out of the house to see whats wrong. Still a kid inside I always give trucker the toot your horn signal, my neighbor drives a dump truck, so now I can toot right back. I usually carry my phone and gun in case I get stuck, or in a jam, out of gas whatever since walking over to get more isn't an option. I fired a shot one time to get their attention, now I got the horn.

No lawn, but if I'm dressed, I have my PM9 on. I live out in the country, read desert, & the law is a long way away. Someone left a nice car on my place, which I thought was probably stolen. I called the sheriff about it. Two days later they showed up. Probably not on the high priority list for them. As it turned out, the owners had lost their keys some how.

As for pets dumped off here, the coyotes handle that.

Thats a viable concern. I can't wait to tell my mom this one, she was a mailman (didn't have an operation or anything) for 30 years. She'll get a kick out of this.

I carry when I mow the lawn because I carry from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. It's just part of getting fully dressed for me. I have either a 1911 or a Kahr CW9 at my side every day.

I've got the same mentality regarding carrying. If I'm not carrying I feel sort of naked. Same as if I'm not wearing a seat belt.

That sure limits the field of fire... more like for drive-bys!

I'd like one pointed forward for the left-lane bandits not passing anyone or yakking on their *********... or generally just driving with their heads up where the sun doesn't shine.

Now for wacking the weeds I use one of these. It's a little expensive to use but it does one heck of a job.

Oh man, I whacked weeds ALL DAY yesterday and dang if I ain't paying the price today. Running a gas powered weed whacker sitting and moving around and in the black berries, and it was probably our hottest day of the summer so far. Only got stcuk once though and had to call for reinforcements to pull me out.

Thought it would do me good and man me up. I ain't moving so good today. I think your weedwacker would work much better and I could sit on the front porsche and run it. (I know I typed porsche instead of porch, closest I'll come to having one.).

Maybe I'll go out today and pressure wash the chair and get all the week guts washed off it. Its a sight.
