View Full Version : New CM9 Clarification

Still waiting for my CM9 to arrive and have everything prepped. Canned air, NAPA Brake Cleaner, etc. In reading the threads I just wanted some clarification. I did order 2 extra 6 rd mags and they showed up. I disassembled and cleaned them. Two comments on the tech threads that are being referred to:
- Make sure the mag spring is properly installed. I assume all this means is that the spring should be "leaning" the proper direction. But is one end of the spring better at the base and the other at the follower? Both ends appear to be the same. Seems that if it doesn't have the proper "lean" you would have a heck of a time reassembling (that nail in the last hole trick works great). Is there some photo I can refer to to make sure the spring is in there correct?
- Another comment is to make sure the open end of the recoil spring faces forward. I am guessing that this will kind of explain itself once the CM9 arrives. But again, if anyone has a photo I would appreciate it. Makes it easier when I can see.
Thanks for the help.

I'm sure you know, but be careful with the compressed gases, as they can ruin the temper of metal and ruin plastic with temperatures approaching -200°! Don't invert the cans or allow the liquid to slosh around and hit the gun. Liquid "air" is fun to play with, but not with pistols.

u did right hoghunters, either end will worki, and the angle of the springs speaks for itself in the follower. Nice job, ur ready for the show to begin!!
The open end recoil spring will speak for itself to. that is a no brainer. Why is it like that to?? If you had the open end the other way it might try to work itself over that recoil assembly back peace (flat washer looking)... wyn: releasing compressed air in my home is called a "fart".and indeed it can make paint krinkle..

Thanks, Wynn. I have never used canned air on my pistols but for that matter I have never used NAPA Brake Cleaner either! Thanks again for the warning and I will definitely keep it in mind. I'm just trying to hold true to the instructions on the tech thread. Want to do all I can to get this CM9 running the first time. I also want to avoid disassembly of the striker/firing pin area and spraying the Brake Cleaner followed by the Canned air seems to be the answer. I will admit, however, I have always just surface cleaned the breach face & firing pin "hole" and have never got down and dirty with the internals of the channel on any firearm I've owned. I would hope the Brake Cleaner / Air combo would also work on a large frame CZ and S&W 15-22? Or am I asking for trouble?

jocko, thanks to you as well. Seems like the folks that don't read and don't ask questions end up having some issues. I have no fears of asking the stupid questions!! Thanks for reassuring me. Seemed like some no-brainer type of questions but rather safe than sorry.
Cannot wait to get this CM9 !!!!!

I have no idea about other guns. I have taken all of my Kahrs apart... the entire slide. You need to make a wire "C" clamp to hold the striker spring compressed while you remove the back plate... each Kahr needs its own... all different sizes... my 4 were. But it's cheap to cut and bend the coat hanger for the "specialized" tool.:D
There are some threads and posts for doing that procedure. After the first time, it's not so scary, but it's not something you need to do often. I was concerned that debris was building up inside the striker channel and i alleviated my fears of that and taking the slide apart. 4 Kahrs... so I've dont that at least 5 times now... not scary at all, and it was neat to see what was in there and how the things go together, because there is an order to re-assembling several of those component trains. And there are two spring loaded trains that can pop out, or things start falling out as tension is removed. The striker/spring/guide rod one and the extractor, pin, spring, and rear pin that locks the back plate on can all exit at high speed if you release them without catching or holding them in place!
Pictures of the parts all laid out are listed in some posts at the beginning of the area where the lube diagram and such are found.

on the kahr tech section are some great picture tutorials on take down the slide if necessary and also for making that little coat hangertype tool wyn is referring to.
For my 2 cents on this, leave the slide alone, use that little clean out hole in the bottom of the slide kand just spray the hell out of that area andit will clean and it will stay clean, do it every time u clean your gun. Less u mess with taking down the slide kthe less time u will spend on the floor looking for those two little springs that flew hell "someplace". If it ain't broke don't fix it...

Sure will. I've got the extra mags, Remora holster, and 1000 rds. of Speer Lawman ready to go. I also have CZ 9mm on order so the Kahr will share the ammo.

Canned air is good to get some of the excess oil out of inaccessible places like the mag release. I'll run a drop or two down in there and blow it to keep it from running out in my holster. I don't invert it tho to get the cold stuff. I chased a horse fly once with that and he only got a big smile on his ugly face and kept going.

I haven't used any air on my CM9 yet, but when I do it will come from my scuba take. Totally dry air and won't cause problems. I am the IT manager here at work and I bring my tanks in whenever I need to blow out keyboards, fans, motherbowrds, etc. It leave no moisture residue and since I own the tank hardly anything to keep it full.

Just to be certain, I bought the 3M Brake cleaner from Napa (3M part #08880 comes in a black spray can). Several folks here mentioned it being $2, but down here I paid $5 for a 14oz can. I got the right stuff, correct?

I was given a very small Cambell-Hausfeld electric air compressor for Fathers day a few years ago that works great for blowing out or drying pistols while cleaning in the hot garage.
I highly recommend if you are a home owner.

heeler,
good thought. I have a pancake compressor for my nail guns. I would just need to get a spray adapter. this way no concerns about that nasty chemical in the air duster cans. just pure air. thanks!

I just picked up a 150 lb. POrter Cable compressor at Lowes last month. What did I ever do without it????
Oh yeah, paid for air. :p
