Wow!! Virginia just had a fairly big earthquake, 5.9 on the scale. I live near Quantico and the quake wasn't much different than a large explosion from the base, but the news is making much-ado about it. My son lives very near the epicenter but he reports no damage.
Next weekend we have a hurricane bearing down on us. I'd better go out and buy some toilet paper, water and batteries... maybe some ammo.

Yup,
I'm in SAP training in Philly.
We had to stop class and evacuate!
I'm from So Cal so I was just laughing...

Felt it a little (20 seconds, stuff on shelves shaking) in Southwest Va..
Felt it up here in Maryland. Shook the third floor up here quite a bit. Most government offices are closing early.
You'll be relieved to know that CNN reported that the President is safe, as he was on a golf course at Martha's Vineyard at the time. CNN breathlessly said that they were going to try to find out if he felt it.
Good to know...

National Cathedral took some damage. That's a shame, it's a beautiful building and being stone is more vulnerable than a normal building.

He'll probably get it too.
5.9 doesn't even slow the traffic down in LA.

Oh man, what a relief. I did the same thing.
More than once. Awkward.

I felt it ever so slightly in Alabama. It felt more like a small building vibration. I wouldn't have noticed except I heard about the one in Colorado this morning and the time I felt it was the exact time it happened in VA.
Roughly the same magnitude, the one down by Trinidad, CO didn't get much attention. The one in VA/DC got major press. Wonder why that was.
A good number of our DC's office folk were here in Denver today. After checking on family, they mostly found the east coast reaction amusing. But, then most of them/us are veterans of L.A.

as for DC, I would be much more concerned about the coming aftershocks coupled with the fact that much of the city is built on drained swampland. Not a good combination.

I think the one to really worry about is the fault near New Madrid MO. They said the last time that one went off it made the Mississippi appear to run backwards for a "spell" Back in 1812, it let loose with 4 major quakes between December and February, with an estimate of 7.00 to 8.1 severity. The effects were felt as far away as Philadelphia, where I've read it rang some church bells.
as for DC, I would be much more concerned about the coming aftershocks coupled with the fact that much of the city is built on drained swampland. Not a good combination.
Donated swampland, DC is that. But given the area and mildness of the immediate aftershocks we don't see much threat.

A good site to see what's going on in the world geologically:
