View Full Version : State of Emergency

When the governor of this state,Queen Beverly Purdue, issues a state of emergency concerning the upcoming storm,I wonder if it will contain the disclaimer that says it does not infringe on ccws or private citizens possession of firearms.Originally a SOE stripped away those rights for the duration of the SOE.The last few she has issued contained the disclaimer about firearms but I wonder what lies in store for the upcoming one.It seems to me that a citizen needs their firearms for protection more desperately during a SOE than at any other time.I have seen people turn into animals at the slightest hint of inconvenience.I remember when Hurricane Fran hit Raleigh back in the nineties. There were fistfights over bags of ice and at gasoline pumps.Fights broke out at grocery stores and Wal Marts. The State Patrol had to be called in to escort line crews from the power company to their work destinations. This is one time when I will become a lawbreaker if need be.On a good day, response time from my county sheriff`s dept.runs between 25 and 45 minutes.I shudder to think what it`s going to be like if we end up with a worse case scenario. All that ammo I have reloaded and my modest arsenal don`t seem so overdone now.But let`s see what Bev has to say.

Same thing happened back in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo tore up Charlotte N.C. I remember standing in a long line to get a gallon of gas from the one station that had a generator to run the pumps...One gallon for a chain saw was all they would sell and some people had 5 gallon cans and wanted to fill them...I was glad to get out of there before something bad happened...I also remember an ice truck pulling into a parking lot and selling ice for $10.00 a bag and people were paying that much until a mob beat the truck driver up and stole all the ice they could carry away...In rough times people can get crazy and do stupid stuff while there is no law and order...

I think it won't bother us much... rain and winds. I filled all of my gas cans, generator, and vehicles Tuesday. I have plenty of water and we'll be okay if we don't lose power for more than a day or so... gotta run our a/c... about 2 gallons an hour maxed out, so not cheap and impossible to keep going much longer than a day.
I wish all of you along the coast further north, the best of luck and I hope that the hurricane diverts further East and you have little impact.
The "c0ckroaches" south of us are probably already queued up waiting for ice and other freebies. The Gummint will take care of them.

Thanks for your concern but I think I`ll have to stay put.Down here,if you left your house for a storm, when you got back your place would be looted. There are some of the nicest people here you would ever want to meet but there are also some of the most common white trash I have ever seen.Their lives revolve around drugs and alcohol and they have no morals at all.Inbreeding isn`t unheard of in some areas but like most vermin, they don`t have the nerve to come at you face to face. The knowledge that they may get shot keeps them in their holes. You just can`t give them the opportunity or you will pay the price.

My wife "Irene" is kind of put out with how they named this one.
Dietrich, I'm thinking maybe you should bury the outhouse flush or a little below grade, maybe a pair side by side kind of like them bathtubs in the Cialis commercials. Get ya one of them telecope kits so you can watch for looters, stay below so the winds and stuff can't get ya and it'll be all good.
Looking at the map your definitely in the hot zone according to the folks that try to predict where these things go. You might have to reconsider that mountain offer. You get yourself took out by the storm I'm gonna give ya 30 demerits and take away your normble button and membership card.

Atlantic Beach actually has nothing to do with the community of Atlantic.AB is about 35 miles to the south. The media doesn`t ever even entertain the notion of soiling their Topsiders by coming this far into the marshlands.I`m kind of glad too.All they are hoping for is death and destruction.Might be fun using them for target practice though.

Like Diet said, Atlantic Beach is on the Intercoastal Waterway and Atlantic is at the end of the island, they are about 45 min- hour away from each. TOTALLY different towns... Kinda sad though Deit that jlottmc and I KNOW where they stay, at the Sheraton Hotel, EVERY time they have a freaking hurricane there. Course, kinda helps that is my old stomping grounds. My second home is Atlantic Beach/Morehead City/Salter Path/Indian Beach. My parents owned a trailer for over 30 years down there. MMM, sure do miss my NC beaches though and that area. 5-6 days my ass, you won't be able to get on the island in 5-6 days, more like 7-10 days with the airline flights, driving to GET to the island, manging to get on the island with the mandatory evacuations, then driving to Atlantic IF you can find it.... Oh yeah, did mention that they CLOSE the two major high rise bridges to get on the island and even after the hurricane is over, ONLY owners with a sticker showing they own property can get on for at least a few days after the hurricane blows through. NO tourists. Only property owners.

Okay we may be delayed a bit as uncle B will need to drive around the PRO Illinois but not much. Actually,Atlantic is the highest point of land in the Down East section of North Carolina.Flooding here isn`t nearly the problem that it is in other nearby communities during hurricanes. Also just for the record,Atlantic isn`t the last point on the island. It isn`t located on an island.Atlantic is located on the mainland.Atlantic Beach, much further south,is located on an island.Don`t take my word for it.Check out a map.Back in the late nineties, the coast of NC was hit with two storms back to back within a couple of weeks of each other.I believe they were named Floyd and Dennis.Flooding Down East was widespread and caused much damage but Atlantic didn`t flood. My brother in law`s house in Sea Level [3 miles away]suffered extensive flood damage and during its` repair, he and his family moved into his Mom`s house in Atlantic.

LOL, I remember Floyd and Dennis Deit...Remember I'm a NC girl. jlottmc was actually flying in and just getting stationed at Camp Lejeune at the time, that was 1999. He later got transferred to the Cherry Pit in Newport. With those hurricanes they flooded even in Raleigh/I95/I40...The radio stations in Raleigh were doing doing fund raisers to collect water to take down to the coast and I heard despise Clint Black's song Like the Rain because they played it OVER and OVER and OVER again. Those two were pretty bad storms. This one I don't know if it is bad, but HUGE. Looks like another one that is going to reach up into Raleigh.

What I like about Colorado's constitution is that it may give the gov the power to declare emergencies, but as far as weaponry goes, he can only control the sale of ammunition, not the possesion or use of firearms.
To buy more during martial law, you must have his approval.
I think you'll be more worried about other things than stockpiling ammo at that time.
Good reason to do so now.
No Katrina crap is gonna happen here.
We'll be like the LA shop owners and sit on our roofs and shoot anyone trying to loot or attack.
Still though, I do not understand why in heaven's name, anyone would allow the gov even when declaring martial law to control your right to bear arms?
You have the GOD given right to self defense and the constitution just clarifies that, doesn't state that the government gives you that right.
They can't and shouldn't be allowed to take those "rights" away for any reason. They then become a dictatorship/monarchy.
Not in America we would say. But then look at what happened in Katrina...
Unbelievable.

Having dealt with both tornadoes are worse than hurricanes. Tornadoes happen unexpectedly with ony a thunderstorm as a precurrsor. Hurricanes are ponderously slow comparitively and getting ready is possible.
Hurrican evacuation is possible and the smart thing to do. Tornado evacuation is not possible, yet.

Hey Diet, If you do decide to stay and hunker down during the hurricane be sure to slather yourself up real good with Crisco so if some flying debris hits you it will slide right off...Seriously though, if this thing brews up to a category 4 storm like they say it might be best to bug out because if you get a direct hit there won't be much to save or loot....Reminds me of what Ron White says..."It's not that the wind is blowing, It's WHAT the wind is blowing and if you get hit by a flying Volvo its not gonna matter what precautions you take"...Last time I drove up to Camp Lejeune from Atlanta it took a little over 7 hours and if you find yourself in need I will be happy to come and help in any way I can... Brother Diet, you take care and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers and let us know as soon as you can how you are....Good luck my friend...

Thank you all for the advice and JFootin, you in particular. We have stocked up on food and emergency supplies including First Aid items, batteries and gasoline for the generator. The gen can keep our freezer and fridge running along with our well.If I don`t let too many things run at the same time it will also heat a tankfull of water so we can take comfortable showers.Hopefully, after this storm,Mrs.Dietrich will give me the go ahead to buy a generator that will run the entire house. Now I will tell you an interesting bit of information.Atlantic,NC is situated right on Core Sound. You can look across the sound and see Core Banks which is part of the outer banks barrier islands. Here`s the kicker.FEMA and FIRM[Flood Insurance Rate Map] do not put this community in a flood risk zone. This locale is actually the highest point of land for many miles.I found that hard to believe until I went to get my property surveyed and the county verified it.The bank demanded the flood zone info and I was glad to provide it.We will lose power for several days but I will let you know how it all goes when I can.

Sounds a bit exciting, it does. Looking at the map, there's not much of anything between you and the storm should it come in. Heck it looks like you can spit in the ocean from your front porch. Even the Outer Bank has an open door in front of you. I truly wish you well should you stay.
As for the subject of the OP, it's a darned good reason to support the Second Amendment Foundation, who have for example sued North Carolina to overturn the emergency powers ban on firearms.
http://www.saf.org/viewpr-new.asp?id=329
If you want a leader in Congress or in legislation, there is none better than the NRA. But if you want to push your rights through the court system, the SAF has become a clear leader in that venue.
As for Irene, we're depending on you Dietrich to soften her up a bit before you send her on up our way into Maryland. i figure we''ll be following in your footsteps only about 10 hours behind. I know we can count on you as our vanguard to take her down a notch or two first.
When hurricane Isabel put a whoppin' on us several years back we were cut off in our neighborhood by fallen trees over the road for 2-3 days & didn't get electricity back for about a week.
This time we're better prepared. Got a nifty generator for the house, stocked up on lots of gas, an obscene amount of ice cream, and enough ammo to defend against any marauding zombies that might be washed up on shore by the storm surge. I'll man the front porch with my CW9, put the wife up on the second story with the Beretta 92, and have the kid out back on the deck. Her Ruger 22/45 isn't past the waiting period just yet, but she'll be happy enough toting my Uzi with her.
Keep your head down Dietrich; we're praying for you!

In the State of Emergency issued for Isabel, our governess issued the one that does not restrict firearms carry at all. There is new legislation that will do away with that horrendous restriction in the other forms of SOEs for good but it hasn`t been through the hoops it needs to yet. From what I understand,it won`t be long.IMO,it shouldn`t have been there in the first place.NC lawmakers tend to drool sometimes.

Probably a little late to ask now, but do you have a power inverter that plugs into your car cigarette lighter/power jack, Dietrich? I also had a chargeable portable battery that I have a small Black and Decker Power Power chargeable battery that can supply 16 watts for ~4 hours for items with non-polar plugs or via usb (this was useful for cell phone or small mobile gizmos). While it's a small power source in its own right I used it to charge my cell phones and such when no primary power was available.

Going back to Dietrich's original posting, I agree that during an SOE is when your conceal carry permit is the most valuable. During the NC Legislature's debate over making changes to the conceal carry laws for the state, I wrote to several of the legislators suggesting that one thing they definitely needed to do was to prevent any state or local government from suspending the right to carry during an SOE.
I don't believe that was in the legislation they passed. When I lived in PA, my neighbors told me several times that if the **** hit the fan, they would come to my house. I had enough guns and ammo to fight of the vermin for a long time.

It's pretty much past Atlantic NC now and winds are down around 25 mph. According to the tracker, the center past about 5 miles to the West and he must have been hit pretty hard. At least it was a Cat 1 by the time it got to him.
Hopefully all have survived and he will have a story to tell. I wouldn't count on cell or landline service though so don't let it worry you if you cannot get through. Cell towers, if still standing need power to operate and the hard communication from towers to network can be down also. Good part is they can get them back up quicker.

They probably got a lot of water and wind and rain. Some parts got hit pretty hard. It came in as a Cat 1, but two piers in Atlantic Beach, one in Emerald Isle got hit hard and half of it got carted off into the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately that area in Atlantic Beach gets hit with flooding even with normal rain fall, its even worse in a hurricane. Trust me, jlottmc and I have been there and stayed on the island in a single wide trailer during a Cat 1 and 2 down there. Diet is probably without power for a few days. Nobody can get on or off the Island right now because the bridges are still closed. I imagine they will be able to get back on either tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

You do realize that he is in Atlantic and not AB, right? No island for him. Remember when I got sent out there and forgotten about? The place where we were drag racing the TRAM, and EBFL down the flight line? We lived on the island then, and you of all people should know that Atlantic and Atlantic Beach are two COMPLETELY different places. Damn tourists.

I do realize that Atlantic and AB are TWO different places. I remember where you were drag racing and had NO phone reception and in the middle of now where in Atlantic NC. I know it is not on the island, but he is still close to a huge body of water at the end of the mainland.

If you want to see where Diet lives, open Google and enter Atlantic, NC. You'll see a small map that ties to Google maps and shows the town. You can choose satellite view and see the area well.

That was my point. She was being a ding dong, twice in one thread. She knows damn good and well were Atlantic is, and where AB (Atlantic Beach) is. Like I said been there, done that. She had it in her head that it was AB we were talking about.

I think I saw Dietrich on TV Saturday afternoon...The Weather Channel had a guy standing on a street corner in the height of the storm telling people that the wind was blowing and it was raining cats and dogs...:rain:... walking behind him but in camera range I see an old quy wearing nothing but shower shoes, a bright red Speedo and a pink shower cap with yellow duckies on it doing the moon walk so I felt better knowing Diet was doing ok...

I saw that too. Comforting isn't it. I also looked it up on Google like Old LIncoln suggested and when I zoomed in I think I saw him on the roof of a house, like he was holding the shingles down or something but he was nekkid cept for the pink shower cap.
All is well.............I hope. Still haven't heard officially.
Reporting in from Kahr's Hurricane Irene Command Central, Maryland Chapter.
The rain started here in central Maryland about 1100 that morning and by 1130 it was getting heavy. By dusk the winds were strong, probably 30-40 mph sustained. We were watching TV at around 2130 when we heard a thud and felt the house shake. I immediately knew what it was: a tree fell down.
We went outside to see where it was & I was surprised to see that it was one of the tulip poplars in our side yard. It had fallen down across the road & completely blocked the street. Our neighbors downhill from us in the cul-de-sac were completely trapped. Other than that, it was very fortunate that it fell where it did. God was looking out for us because had it fallen in just about any other direction it could have struck our house or our neighbor's house on the same side. Indeed we had been sitting out on our front porch earlier in the evening watching the storm and were only about 20' away from the tree. We easily could have been squashed like bugs.
The poplar trees are the most predominant trees in our area, but I hate them. These monsters easily grow 100-150' high in our area but have very shallow roots - just a few feet thick. So if you get lots of rain and wind, they are easily toppled and can crush a house. That happened during Hurricane Isabel a few years ago. Three blocks away a poplar fell on one of our neighbors' house and literally cut the house in half - two stories deep. Had they been in bed when it fell they would have been killed but fortunately they were in their kitchen at the time.
After notifying our neighbors downhill, we went back inside, only to lose all power, phones, cable TV, and internet at 2200. Having learned my lesson from Hurricane Isabel, however, I was ready with my generator, and so we were able to go about our business, minus A/C and the clothes dryer, which are too much for my generator to handle. The power was off almost exactly 24 hours, as were the other utilities mentioned above.
Early the next morning we ventured out to survey the damage. Besides our tree, one other had fallen further up also blocking the road, and two more had fallen across driveways, blocking those individual families in. The whole community pitched in and worked together however, and by afternoon we at least had the roads and the driveways open. Since I had the largest chainsaw in the area and also had a logging tool (cant hook) I was in demand and worked all day on both our neighbor's trees as well as the one in our yard. Today I continued working on cleaning up the one in our yard. I have everything done except about 6 feet near the root ball. After two solid days of essentially logging, and considering I'm normally a geeky desk jockey, as you can imagine I'm pretty tired & sore.
No zombies washed up on shore to report; all is well in that department.
I hope Dietrich is OK. I notice he hasn't reported in yet. Gotta get me one of them shower caps; as you all know I do follow his fashion advice after all. Well except the nekkid part...
Some photos of the tree from our yard are attached. Gotta run now. It's late & I need some sleep. Plus our anniversary is in the morning. We're headed up to Gettysburg for the day which is double coupon day for me: I get to CCW since I'm leaving the state of Maryland and also we know an absolutely excellent restaurant in Gettysburg that serves the best prime rib I've even tasted. Yum.

Excellent report Maryland bureau I'm thankful to hear that you and your loved ones are safe and unharmed. Thank God the tree fell as it did. And yes we're still awaiting the Atlantic NC bureau report. Uncle Bawanna has played it pretty close to the vest but he's been quite jumpy lately and he only has one and a half fingernails left. Thankfully his trigger fingernail remains intact and unchewed. Hope you and your wife have a wonderful anniversary and may you enjoy your time in Gettysburg enjoying and lawfully exercising your 2A rights! P.S. Admit it aray, it was fun being a lumberjack for a day wasn't it? Tiring, true, and wishing you didn't have to use the tools wisely purchased but...that's how I feel anyway taking care of trees knocked over in storms. If only they always would fall so nicely away from people and property.

Great pix and report. I'm sure glad the trees didn't hit anything or anyone. It's terrific that you were prepared with the proper tools and a generator. I don't think I could get my chainsaw started... used it once... and I have enough gas for just about 24 hours on the generator... maybe... full 16-gal tank and 5x5gal cans. My generator will barely run the house A/C and I can turn that off to run anything else as needed. It's 15Kw, but I can only use 12Kw with one 50amp 220-volt outlet tied into the house panel(not to code, but I bought and read a few books on wiring:D AND I wired it in HOT as a challenge... neat panel and I did wear rubber gloves) with a homemade interlock to prevent back-feed. I made a sliding plate that allows the main on OR the input C/B from the generator to be ON, but not both. The danged generator uses 1.6 gal/hour at half power, so I figure about 2 gallons an hour... pretty expensive these days and I'm not going to be running back and forth to the gas stations, if they're open!
The storm pretty much missed us. I even had to water my lawn Sunday. I had thought we would get more wind and some rain, but I'm happy that we didn't get horizontal rain to fill the walls... I didn't get through caulking because it rained a tiny bit off and on Thursday.
The hurricanes usually pass a little East of us and then bang into the Carolinas like this.
Take care.
Wynn:)

Ditto on the report Ray. Glad things went well and congratulations on your anniversary. Enjoy your night out and prime rib sounds good to me. Maybe we'll follow and go to our favorite steak house Saturday.
Wynn, what can I say. Wired it hot did you? I'm glad that went well as we'd likely not know why you disappeared from the forum. A few years ago our whole area was off for almost a day. There was a run on generators and all. Don't think power has been out for more than a couple minutes since.
Like others I'm anxiously awaiting new on Deitrich. He was in the heart of that monster and needed a stout house to hold up. Although word is he laughs at a Cat 3 storm and Irene was only a Cat 1 by the time it hit him. I'm thinking he must be okay and probably is just without power or internet. Still, like Ray said, trees can be menacing as well as other airborne debris.
