Does anyone use an Ultrasonic Cleaner to help clean their polymer frame guns?

I just bought an UC and I've read several posts about what solutions people use in the UC. I'm considering using the following options in the UC.

- Ed's Red Home made bore cleaner minus the acetone
1 part Dex III ATF, 1 part K1 Kerosene, 1 part Varsol/Naptha low odor mineral spirits

- Simple Green mixed with water

- Breaking down and buying the Crest Ultrasonic Cleaning Solution at $89 a bottle.

Does anyone know how Ed's Red or Simple Green treats a polymer frame in an UC?

Does anyone know how Ed's Red or Simple Green will affect Night Sights? I have the XS Big Dot sights on my Kahr PM9.

Thanks! I'm new to this forum. It looks like there are a lot of great people here. Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't used one for cleaning the frame but I do use one for cleaning cases to reload. For that I use a 50/50 solution of vinegar then a clear water rinse. This will probably not help, but I thought I would at least answer.

Thanks for the reply! That is good to know because I am eventually going to clean brass too.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with the notion of dunking my poly frame into a US bath. I'd say a maybe IF it were completely stripped down including the internals and each part wiped down and oiled before re-assembly. I'd say yes to only the barrel.

Finally, I'll say it is not necessary and the downside of moving any crud around outweighs the upside whatever that may be.

I got my wife an ultra sonic cleaner for Christmas or something for cleaning her jewelry (the guns I could have bought?) It works with mixed results, alot depends on what you put in it.

Alot of gun ranges around here have them and offer cleaning in them, I've never tried it. To me the downfall is your removing all lubrication in places the average guy really can't get to. I could see it on a neglected gun but not so much as a regular cleaning tool.

We have a solvent tank here at work, actually I have one at home too although I never use it. Its good for the officers to quickly scrub down their guns. I'm not concerned since they are Glocks and I can tear them down completely and detail clean and lube if there is ever an issue. I clean at my desk with Hoppes or MPro 7 and qtips and brushes. Old school I guess.

I kind of compare it to putting your gun in a dish washer or hand washing. I prefer hand washing myself but I'm anxious to hear responses from others who have experience with the ultra sonic cleaners.
Maybe my preferences would change.

I don't know what cleaning solution they use, but I sent my nickel P220 to SIG last year for service. Part of the service was a complete disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning. The 14 year old pistol came back looking like a new gun. They installed new NS's afterwards, so I don't know how it effects sights.

wonder why something like DAWN in an ultra cleaner would do??? Not sure anultra will do a good bore job but other than that I see no reason why it would not work great. Just make sure what ever liquid u use is not harmful to polymer..

I worry about metal to plastic vibration causing wear, but I would REALLY worry about subjecting Night Sights to solvents and "intrusive" cleaning with US!

It's one thing to "wash" your white dots off as several owners have done, but something else to erode or defeat the bonding agents used to secure the Tritium vials!

JMHO, but YMMV.

Wynn:)

They have a product (and have for years) called dunk-it, even have it for tupperware these days, that was supposed to be used in a bucket with a rod to do the same thing. A bunch of PD's have a USC (well those that have WAY too much money), I haven't heard anything bad except that they don't get used because no one cares to do it. I would also hesitate to use that red's stuff. Naptha=lighter fluid, kerosene=do I even need to say it? Trans fluid, not on my guns thank you. Simple Green will take ALL the oil and lube off metal, and leave the plastic an ashey gray.

That Dawn soap is amazing stuff. I tried it in the jewelry ultra sonic cleaner and got better results, still not great but better. They even use it to clean up the oil soaked Penquins down there in Louisiana at the oil spill.

I occasionally get a nasty nasty weapon that needs to be cleaned (think suicide) a bucket of warm soapy (Dawn) water is the first step. Along with good quality rubber gloves, sometimes doubled and a mask. Thank goodness we don't get many of those.

If they made ultra sonic big enough for a rifle this would be one time I'd happily use it.

They do make them like that, but they cost both arms and a leg.
