View Full Version : Is It My Imagination?

I participate in several online gun forums, but KahrTalk is among my favorites. Now, having said that, is it my imagination or is there an inordinate number of "crusty old gentlemen" on KahrTalk as opposed to other gun forums? Being a member of the "Crusty-Old" fraternity, its ok with me. I feel welcome here. Was just curious, that's all. :)

Ok, everyone who considers themselves a member of the Crusty Old Fraternity enter and sign in please.
If your not a member but get along better with Crusty Old as opposed to snifflling runny nose younguns log in too.
If your a sniffling runny nose youngun and now hate me more than liver and spinach I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me. I are one too. A mere lad at 57 Friday.
That does it, next year I'm starting to count backwards. I still remember clearly thinking my dad was the oldest man alive when he was 36. Aah to go back to 36 when I could see, and hear a litte bit and walk, walking was good, really really good.
But I digress, log in oldies but goodies.

I saw a poll over at The High Road a few days ago and was surprised to see that a large number of the people were under 30. I guess it's not my crowd.

I would guess yes. Reason is I notice so much weekday work time posting here and figure half of us must be retired in order to do so. Generally it is older people that retire and I believe there is a natural correlation between age and crustiness. BTW, I'm 67, 5'10' and 160 pounds of romping, stomping former Marine. :)

I thought about retiring a couple of years ago............... for about 5 minutes.
The thought of getting up in the morning and not having any place I needed to be terrified me. Money is no longer much of a factor, but I just can't do it. My jobs aren't of the 9 - 5 variety, and I'm self-employed in all of them. In my car interior repair business, I gave most of my dealers to other people in the company. I kept the ones where I've been working for 12-15 years and work 3 or 4 hours a day 5 days a week. I own rental property, but my tenants are long term, so that takes little time. In my computer company, I used to build 12-15 systems a month, but with computers at $400, I can't make any money. I do a couple of high line business or gaming systems a month for, maybe, 6 hours. I write for two magazines, mostly 12-3 AM for another 6-8 hours a month, depending on the required research. The Diner used to take 4-5 hours a day.
Fortunately, I don't need much sleep. I average about 4 hour a night or whenever. I saw Vickie 5 times this past week for about 20 hours. The earliest we hooked up except for one dinner date was 12:30 AM and Tuesday night she called at 2:00 AM and asked me to meet her for coffee. I got home at 5:30 and left for work at 8:30.

Man, I'm in my mid-50's, 54, and I don't know whether to feel old or young around here.
I have found that as we age we tend to be more gray -- we understand the gray areas inherent within issues and debates, but we know which side we're on and we stick to it. In an absurd and cockeyed way that makes us old curmudgeons easier to get along with.

Oh I've done that too. Talk about awkward. We had a sgt here offer to buy a ladies lunch saying she'd need the money when the little one arrived, she wasn't pregnant either. King size ooops.
I had a really nice gal working with me at a hearing aid place and I noticed she was bulking up but damned if I was gonna say anything. She finally brought it up and wanted to know why I hadn't noticed. I told her I did but I wasn't taking no chances. She got a big chuckle out of that.

Well I'm feeling a little better knowing it is a common thing. That was a long time ago and I remember like it was yesterday.
Kind of funny in hindsight but at the time I could easily have crawled under the rug and mingled with the ticks and fleas and I think that's what she would have preferred I do also.

It's funny, I used to refrain because of the faux pas I committed many years ago. But more recently, I think it's a respect for personal space/privacy.
I remember a couple of years back, I hurt my arm. It wasn't serious, just a tennis elbow sort of thing. I wore a sling and took it easy for a few days. Man oh man, did I ever get tired of people asking about my arm, offering condolences, etc. I wished I had a portable "somebody else's problem" field generator.
I imagine that (barring attention fiends), pregnant women grow tired of people inquiring about their status in much the same way. So I don't contribute to it.

Scary, but ...
I've been on this board since sometime earlier this year (I think) but threads like this keep popping up without my awareness of their earlier existence. Right away, that must be some kind of evidence of aging on my part.
Also scary, but ... I have trouble keeping track of how old I am. Usually have to do some arithmetic to figure out "how many years" old I am. Late 50's somewhere - I'll have to get back to you after I get my calculator out.
I'm still part of the working world, but for some time now I have been the oldest person in every group that I have worked in. I long ago got over having a boss that was younger than I am. I've never had a woman boss, though, so that's one other "first" that I doubt will ever happen to me.
On a serious note, the relative youthfulness of most of my work associates also shows up in their relative inexperience and the type of judgments they make based on their lack of experience. Soon I plan to check out of the working world and leave it to the youngsters, knowing that they will still be out there making all the same mistakes over and over again. Which is one reason why things are so messed up today. <End of today's philosophical comment>
