I put on an informal seminar this weekend for my son and his friends and then let them shoot a 9mm P226, .45 cal 1911, and my favorite, a PM40 hand canon. The idea was to show them a little about recoil versus gun weight, size, and caliber. I love the size of the PM40, but it is light, and the gun is a challenge to shoot for long for a novice. My question is this: How comfortable is the steel version of the PM40, the MK40? I would think the steel KM40 would be much more comfortable to shoot. I saw one in a gun shop on Saturday and nearly bought it, but held off until I could get some input from here. I will check the MK forum as well.

I have an Mk9 that I bought by chance and love it. I've put around 500 rounds of every type of ammo thru it without a single malfunction. Very easy to shoot I like 147 grn standard pressure (not +p).

Personally I've got rid of two .40s, one Sig and one Glock. I don't like the caliber its a solution looking for a problem IMO. (Please note IMO) If 9 is too small get a .45.

I have a K40 and its a brisk handful to shoot. I've often thought the PM's must really be something to hold. Many absolutely love them.

I had mine mag na ported to reduce some of the flip and it helped but it's still a fire breathing dragon. The MK I imagine would be a bit more to contend with because of the smaller grip.

I can shoot it all day but to me it bucks too much for a defense gun.

I took jmurch's suggestion and got a PM45. I like 40 in larger frame guns, just no so much with these little compacts.

Thanks for the replies. I like shooting the PM40 because it is always surprisingly accurate. I can't imaging what a PM45 would be like, however, recoil-wise. What I am guilty of is comparison between my light P226 9mm and my all stainless X-5 9mm. The X-5 is not quite a pound heavier and shoots like a dream in IDPA style matches, due to the reduced flip in recoil. I was wondering if the MK40 is more manageable than a PM40, that's all. Would an MK9 should shoot something like a full size polymer gun, recoil-wise?

The recoil on my MK9 is just slightly more than my Glock 17. I would bet there is someone or somwhere near you where you could shoot one.

I have shot all these four: MK40, PM40, MK9, PM9
They're all about the same size (dimension-wise).
Here is what I see:
1) PM40 - this give the most kick
2) MK40- less kick than PM40 but heavier
3) PM9 - the kick is hardly noticeable
4) MK9 - smooth as silk but heavier than PM9

My choice of carry? PM9

I'll see if I can find an MK40 or MK9 locally to shoot. Weight doesn't bother me. I already have a CM9 and PM40 for carry. Thanks for the feedback.
