View Full Version : Interesting FedEx shipping situation today

Thursday, the 29th I called Kahr, spoke to Rich, discussed my P380's ejection problems, got a R/A and shipping label emailed.
Today, the 3rd, I boxed the P380 and magazines up, along with an explanatory letter, and went up to the nearest FedEx shipping center, the same one I've shipped it from twice this year already.
I had the pistol and box inside the box Kahr had used to ship it back to me in April.
Gentleman at the counter looked everything over, and asked if Kahr had provided my a copy of their FFL. I said no, told him I had shipped from this location twice this year already, and had not been asked that the previous two times. He said Yep, they needed it. He gave me a card with their fax # he said Kahr could send it to.
I went back home, called Kahr and amazingly enough, went straight through not only to a human being, but it was Rich, the guy I spoke to on the 29th. He remembered our conversation of the 29th and had my case # at hand.
I explained the situation. Rich said the equivalent of "BS', and said they were making laws up. He took the number of the FedEx facility and said he'd call me right back.
He called me back inside 5 minutes and said I was ready to go. Just take it back up there and be sure to talk to XYZ who was the person he had explained how the cow ate the cabbage to.
Went back up to the FedEx place (5 minute trip which is why I wasn't too torqued up about the situation) and had all 3 counter employees almost falling over themselves to get it boxed, taped, and shipped. Aplogized almost too profusely.
Anyway, thanks Rich of Kahr customer service.

All's well that ends well.
My guess is that FedEx already has Kahr's FFl info on file, right?

Like a dummy I never thought to ask, but was mentally kickng myself on the way home for not thinking of it while I was there.

Probably not. An FFL on file isn't required to ship a firearm back to the legitimate manufacturer via FedEx.

Exactly, same rule that allows a legitimate gunsmith or manufacturer to return the gun directly to you and not to an FFL.

The last time I sent my P 380 to Accurate-Irons for some work, Fed Ex told me I needed his FFL number before I could ship it. After asking for the supervisor and not ever getting one to talk with, they sent it "just this once" but from now on I will need the FFL number of who I am sending it to. Is this something new with them?

With as many P380's going back to Kahr I'm sure FedEx didn't want to loose their business... :behindsofa: (Sorry I couldn't resist.:D)
No, you were just dealing with an ignorant clerk who figured this was the best way to deal with the immediate situation. If he/she worked for me I would have them shot for caving in violation of what they perceived as federal firearms law. After that I would have demoted them to just carrying boxes for not knowing their job.

All but one time out of 5 returns, I had the package picked up at my house... just picked a time.. a convenient window, like 1pm to 2pm. Once I thought I had scheduled pickup, but found out an hour after what I thought I had scheduled, that I hadn't and had to drive out to the office at the air port... the one open the latest on that Friday.
I talked with a guy at Kahr and he asked what I preferred, so I went with home pickup... just a few more bucks to Kahr. Several times, I scheduled the whole thing myself online at FedEx with Kahr's permission, using their account number, including the time I screwed up home pickup. I was a regular customer.:D

Afterwhich the idiots took turns throwing your gun against the brick wall as revenge for you getting them in trouble....Good Luck:p

I wouldn't call them idiots, and it didn't have that kind of aura to it. Kahr will be the first people to put eyes on the pistol after it leave FedEx. I'm not too worried.
Like I said in this post (http://kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?p=99569&posted=1#post99569) a few weeks back on KT, the service I received from Rich was just awesome! Glad to see you had the same experience and you got things resolved with our new future postal carrier :)

The silver lining to this cloud was that I had remembered Kahr's Rich as "Rick" and had used that name in my letter. I had also broken a pencil tip while writing the case # Rich was giving me, and garbled a character in the case # I put in the letter.
So during the brief trip back home, and after the phone call to Kahr, I was able to modify my enclosed letter with a correct name and case # and print another copy before going back up to FedEx.
Silver linings are good things. Keeps the ulcers away.
I used "Interesting" in the title of this post for a reason as applied to the situation with FedEx. I didn't use "AH's", "Idiots", "Pissed off", "Jerks', "Incompetent", "Stupid", etc because they didn' t apply.
It wasn't that big a deal. And now somebody knows something they didn't before. They've always treated me fine up there, and I'll need to be going back. I don't burn bridges unless there's a mighty good reason. Whatever Rich said to them was between FedEx and Kahr. I made an effort to come off as NOT pissed off about the situation.
I much prefer dealing with FedEx in getting and receiving a firearm back from the manufacturer. With Ruger, for example, who uses UPS, if you want them to pay for it, they make you schedule pickup and delivery from the house. You get a morning/afternoon choice. You've got to have a "21 or older" adult receive the pistol. If you've got somebody that's home regularly, I guess it could present no problem. My wife is a flight attendant and only home about half the time. Never when I'm waiting on UPS of course. You can waste the better part of 2 days waiting for that big brown truck to show up. There is no option, at least here, to hold the received firearm at a facility for pickup like FedEx gives you.
Anyway, it's over. No problemo.
