ANother article says he was forced in his car and forced to drive across the street where they beat him unconscious. He awoke and his car, wallet, and phone were gone.

Always carry and be aware of your surroundings (even at public urinals!). It's not just females they are targeting.

Nobody is immune... sad for sure.

I'm thankful he survived. Today the mindset is all to often not to leave a witness.

Ok I found the soap box so here goes. Why the F do people always say "he's such a great person and I can't believe that this would happen to him etc." and if they catch the goblins then their families will say that they were on the road to recovery and trying to turn their lives around etc. What happened to personal responsibility, on both parities. What happened to fighting back, ok I get that not every one can/should/will carry a gun, but still. I do not understand this victim this and victim that mindset. On a related note, if you don't fight back but meekly comply, how do you look at yourself in the mirror. Those I could/should haves will haunt you, and personally I think the answer to the questions that come out of not fighting back most people really don't like. I'll get off the soapbox for a bit, but I reserve the right to hop back on.

I agree with your soapbox jlottmc, but not everyone is made like we are. I know of several people that just simply could not fight back, as sad as that sounds.

One of my arguments for carrying is that, honey, I'm not going to just take a beating. I'm going to protect you and me and fight back as much as I can.

BTW, can this be moved to General Dicsussion?

Thought I had posted it there. Sorry.

My point with the fight back part is that anything is better than not, and the aftermath is not always battle scars and such, but rather the feeling/knowledge that something could/should have been done and the feeling of utter cowardice that would ensue when one does not do all that can be done at the moment of truth. That's where I was trying to go with that. Then again, in my eyes failure is not an option when the world shows you that all is not peaches and cream.
Which goes back to the personal responsibility and the everyone's a victim part. And now for the preach to the choir part. The communist bastards that are so prevalent these days would have us all believe that police protection is just a phone call away, and that we should leave all these kinds of things to those who get paid to do it. How's that working for this here pastor again? How well does that work in general? Somebody take this soap box away and put it back up please, before I get cranky.

That is NOT a good place where he stopped. I know that area and I would have to know I couldn't make it another 5 miles up the road and then I still might chance it before I stopped in that part of town. Downtown Birmingham is not a place to stop unless you really have to. He must not have known what type of area it was.

Oh, and +1 on going down fighting.

Half the mushheaded younger kids I know think that if they walk down any city's MLK drive, and just radiate that they understand, and empathize, and love their brother man, then by golly, koombaya, everything will be alright. A sort of Condition Blissful. Wish I was wrong, but I'm not.

Oh man, you saved a dreadful day with a simple by golly koombaya! I'm pickin myself up off the floor I'm laughing so hard.

You indeed nailed it and couldn't be a more correct and meaningful post.

Take notes, MLK Drive, Radiate, Empathize, and love men, and by golly KOOMBAYA!

Makes me want to take a trip and never leave the farm.

Thank you for making my day.

I am reminded of the scene in "The Lost Boys" movie where Grandpa and the kids got into the car for a drive into town. He starts the car, revs the engine a few times, and then turns it off and gets out. The kids ask "I thought we were going for a drive into town?" and he responds "That's as close to town as I like to get these days."

I hope to God that you still have that same attitude when you get your badge, and I'm betting you will.

I'm sure he will too but it won't help. It will be on the down side of the job. It will fit in nicely with his shoot clean rinse repeat mantra.
Find em. arrest em, book em. Turn the nice folks loose and repeat.

Surv, I've held that belief for a number of years now. I have no problem standing up for those weaker than me. I also hear the cops I know reflect those very beliefs that I just espoused daily. I can say this, I'll do my part to make a difference (yes I know that sounds like the PC crap we get shoved down our throats), and my mark will be made like that. It just bothers me to hear some one say "I can't...". Just as an FYI, the director of the academy that I'm in says that when he hears that, that person has given up, and is then begging for their life. He continues that with the question of how that works and the same belief that I shared. We'll get you and some other like minded folks elected to office, and appointed to the bench, we'll be ok.
