Hey all, last night i had a failure that has rendered my "new" CM9 unusable and Kahr is having me send it back. When i got it last month, i racked the slide 500 times, cleaned and lubed it and then took it to the range and put 250 rounds through it. I did have a few fail to feeds but, other wise pretty solid. Now, i am near the 400 round mark and this happened. Its pretty clear that the outer guide rod spring is slipping out of the end of the muzzle jamming the gun as it gets pinched in the opening. This happened on every round fired last night. I would tear it down, un-jam the spring and reassemble and try again. Now, its pinched so bad that i cant physically rack the slide to clear the jam and there is a spent casing stuck in the chamber. Has any one else had this happen? I feel that this is associated with the "sticky slide" problem i have been having (among others) where the slide almost feels like it is binding up 1/2 way back when trying to rack it.

Wow. I have not had any problems. Hope they get it resolved quickly for you.
Keep us posted.

If you can get the slide forward again or get that spring back inside enough to take the gun down you can just open up that last coil a bit and then when installing it make sure the end is pointed up toward the barrel.
There's less gap between the slide and barrel on the top and the end can't sneak out on ya.
I don't know how long or hard you've tried to take it apart but I'd put a valiant effort into trying to do so. At the worst Kahr could sent you a new recoil spring assembly. Open the end up a bit and you should be good.
Unless I'm missing something, this shouldn't be a tough fix.

Is that a break in the frame construction below the recoil spring? It looks like a hole in the frame or a crack or missing metal.

what bawanna stated should make a good fix.
I have seen some of these spring making and cutting machines and some when they make the automatic cut, the cutter actually slices the end off and there for creates a very sharp, not blunt edge, kinda like hammering the end of the spring to a flattened end. this will as we have seen interfer with the recoil rod and can cause binding. If one will just open that end up a tad and even then take a small file and round that sharp end off. he will have a proper working gun. i realy see no need to send the gun back.
I am also veiwing what Ikeo74 is asking about to. What the hell is that???. Almost looks like the slide if out to far even. Might just be the photo to..,

It's not crystal clear but that recoil spring just might be on backwards too. The part I can see looks like it might be just a little bit flat. The more open end goes to the front. It might be correct, kind of hard to see really and it does look like an obvious open end so maybe I'm all wet too.

Thanks for the responses guys. Just to clarify, the part of the frame that you are seeing is normally not exposed however, since the spring is binding the gun up, the entire slide will not fit entirely over the lower frame. I was able to take the gun apart but, i have not been able to pull the spring out of the jam. Thats why it looks funny.
Also, the spring is installed with the larger end at the the muzzel end and the small tapered end is at the back on the barrel block.
When i called Kahr, they did not give me a option other than sending the gun in. Can i just call back and have them send me out a new guide rod and spring?
Thanks, Darren

I don't follow why you wouldn't be able to get the spring out of the jam if you can get the slide off? I'd send that same picture to Kahr and suggest that a new recoil spring assembly might fix your issue. I suspect they would just send you one. Just a guess but I think that's what would happen.
In the mean time get that spring out of there and bend the end out a tad and see if its gonna work. If in fact for some reason it does have to go back we don't want to be wasting time with a broken gun.
Let us know how it works out. We kind of keep a library of illness's and fixes around here to share the next time they come up.

if u can get the slide off the gun,m then you can get that recoil assembly off the gun. I would do what bawanna suggested. open up that end a tad, smooth it down also and then send kahr that photo and ask for a new reecoil assembly. I have no doubt they will send u one as it will same them big bucks.

That IS the open end of the spring poking out. The guide rod could be too short or too small at the front end, or a combination that allows the spring to get in front of the front of the guide rod.
You could take a wooden dowel and a hammer and tap the guide rod back in so you can get the pistol apart to replace or work on the guide rod and/or spring.
Maybe you need both a new guide rod AND a spring.

Isn't the guide rod part of the recoil inner spring assembly. The outer spring that is stuck just slips onto the rod that contains the inner spring.
And you can't buy just the outer spring anymore so it's the whole unit as a package.
Am I thinking right here. That would be a new and different thing I know.

This sounds like the same problem as this thread:

Once you get the casing out you might want to try opening up the end of the spring. It fixed my "sticky slide" problem.
