View Full Version : Damaged ejector and muzzle flash

I know the two don't have much in common, but they are somewhat connected for this post.
Recently, I noticed that the end of the ejector on my CW9 was damaged. This had not caused any kind of issue as the pistol runs flawlessly, but I didn't like the look of it. It seems the ejector came to a pretty much knife like front edge and deformed as any thin knife edge will if subjected to impact. My solution was to file the edge back a little to make it a beefier edge.
Here are some before and after photos (sorry about the quality):

About the muzzle flash thing: I took the CW9 out to see how the shortened ejector worked (did fine). I also took another pistol along with me. Shooting went into the late evening and the darkened desert accentuated the muzzle flash from both guns. Anyone care to guess what I'm firing here:

The flash is larger in short-barreled guns. The .22's are designed for use in 16"++ barrels. I get the same thing shooting my 18" 12-gauge... lots of powder wasted in a bright flash.
I would like someone to do flash testing and chrono testing with the new Speer .22mag GOLD DOT short barrel ammo... made for 2" barrels. That would be interesting... had me thinking of buying a .22 Mag pistol... Taurus SS 8-shot 2-3" bbl. WHY? I don't know!

Wow, I was damn close, only missed it by about 18 calibers. Glad you got an AMT, might have another project to talk with you about.

Well I'll be dipped in goose slobber I never seen one like that before. Sure looks ala Ruger don't it?
Must be about 7 1/2 or 8" of barrel real estate too?

According to Wiki...
The pistol was an unlicensed low-cost clone of the Ruger Mark II pistol and, along with the AMT Lightning 25/22 rifle, prompted a successful trademark infringement lawsuit from Ruger that helped bankrupt the company.

So does this mean I can put a check mark over in the bawanna got something right column? It'll be the only one and kind of lonely but it's a start.
Sad to hear it being a leverage point in the demise of AMT but you just can't copy the big boys without being responsible for your actions.

I'm experimenting I copied Gregs signature. I'll see if I get struck by lightning on the way home. It's clouding up out there, could happen.

Bawanna,
That barrel goes 10 inches. FWIW, there was also a Lightning that looked like the Auto Mag: The Baby Auto Mag (http://www.maynardarmsco.com/?page_id=13)
To the best of my knowledge Ruger did sue AMT, but they ended up settling out of court. AMT paid some compensation and ceased production of the pistols. By that agreement, they (AMT) were allowed to continue with production of their Lighting rifle (closely resembles the 10/22). While the above surely didn't help AMT's cause, by many accounts it didn't put them under. AMT continued to make firearms until went out of business some years later for a myriad of reasons. The Maynard site I linked to above supports most of that: http://www.maynardarmsco.com/?page_id=6
This site also has some very good info on the old AMT product line:

I knew I should have patented that signature.

I have the Auto Mag, don't think it's called Baby though. It's my neighbors. It's 22 mag. Don't eject, don't see an ejector and don't see a place for one to go. Looking at Numrich and other places they list an ejector but are out of stock all the time. I honestly don't even know where it goes.
Has to be one. I've just been tinkering with it for quite awhile. They go for ridiculous sums of money at the gun shows. I was shocked. Well they are asking alot, never seen anybody buy one.
Glad you didn't patent that signature, I'd be in hot water for sure.

Jocko

It sounds like you have an AutoMag II (http://www.glossover.co.uk/amt/pdf/AutoMagII.pdf ). The ejector would sit in a slot on top of the frame and the slide holds it in place. If this is the pistol you have, Brownells has the ejector: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=20532/avs|Manufacturer_1=AMTzz1zzHIGH%20STANDARD/Product/EJECTOR (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=20532/avs%7CManufacturer_1=AMTzz1zzHIGH%20STANDARD/Product/EJECTOR)

Well once again you figured something out in 5 minutes that has stumped me for a year and a half. I got the part on my order list at Brownells already.
I still don't see where it's gonna go but I'm gonna look again tonight now that I got a better idea where to look.
I better write down how many times you've bailed me out. I'm gonna send you one of my kids, all I got left are boys, you want a big one that eats alot or a skinny one with 6 pack abs but is kind of scrawny. Not quite the attitude of the bigger version. Your choice.

Shhhsh, I'm using that nice schematic to figure out where this baby food jar of extra pieces go.
I looked and looked for a good schematic, have one in one of my books but it ain't very good. Not clear.
Greg is one sharp cookie, I bet he's got a bunch of knives in the drawer, all I gots a spoon.
Truth be told the neighbor sent this and an old cheap import revolver at the same time. I thought the revolver was toast and I'd never get it. Somebody had been inside, messed it up and gave up. A couple hours tinkering and head scratching and darned if I didn't get that one back together and timed and a shooter, still a POS but it would shoot.
I figured the Automag II would be a cake walk but it's still on the bench.

There are a bunch of arrows pointing at various dots... what bothers me, is that I see some DOTS without arrows and parts numbers!!
I hope you didn't just get a bag of parts... like on American Guns or whatever the other night.
