View Full Version : eReader Comparison

A few of you were asking what the difference was with some of the various eReaders out there. I know first hand how deciding on one can be a bit of a daunting task. Amazon has four different ones, and that's just from one company! I'll try to explain the pros/cons of each and I'll list info/specs on them as well.

Let me start off by saying that I own an Amazon Kindle Keyboard Wifi. I'll also be buying a new Amazon Kindle Touch when it comes out, as well as the Kindle Fire. I do not own any Barnes & Noble products, but I have read a lot about them and I have played with them as well. I chose the Amazon products simply because they are the right ones for me.

Let's start with the Amazon line-up:

Kindle 4th generation $79 with "Special Offers" (explained below) $109 without.
This Kindle is Amazon's entry level eReader. Kind of like the Kahr CM9. This entry level only has wifi, there's no 3G. This means that if you want to sync books from your Amazon account to your Kindle you'll have to be connected to a wifi network. They've also removed the keyboard from the previous generation Kindle. I think that this was a good move. I personally never used the keyboard anyway. It only got in the way when I was holding it. The battery lasts just as long as it did in the previous Kindle, one month. That's right, the battery lasts a really long time. I read heavily, and my Kindle's battery last me about 3 1/2 weeks. That's pretty amazing in this day age where we have to plug in our smart phones at least once a day. The way you turn pages is by pressing small buttons along the side of the device. It's really an easy and natural thing to do. You don't have to stretch your fingers at all. One can also use the Kindle to play audio books. I haven't ever used this feature, so I cannot attest to how well it works. You can also use it to play music like a big iPod. I haven't used this feature either. This thing is light as well. It's quite a bit lighter than the previous model. On the previous model my smaller hands have no problem holding the Kindle for a few hours at a time. My arms don't get tired, and my fingers don't cramp at all. It's less than 6 ounces. Amazon says that it is 30% lighter than the previous Kindle. It's got a 6" E Ink screen. These screens really do look just like paper in a book. You have to see it to believe it, it's nuts. You can also enlarge the text in your books in case your eyes are shot. (Probably like Bawanna's:banplease:)

Amazon also just teamed up with over 11,000 libraries in the US. What that means is that you can rent books from your library and put them on your Kindle. All from the comfort of your computer at home. All you need is a library card from your local library. I think it's a really cool feature.

Now let me tell you about Amazon's "Special Offers" option. "Special Offers" is what Amazon calls ads. You can order the new Kindle for $30 cheaper if you opt for the special offers option, but then you'll have ads popping up on your screen once in a while. You'll have to decide if this is a problem for you. Me? I don't want the ads. I can't stand commercials on TV telling me to buy crap that I don't want, so why would I want them to interrupt the book I'm reading? I'll gladly pony up the extra $30 to have an ad free Kindle.

Kindle Touch WiFi-$99 With "Special Offers" $109 without. 3G-$149 With "Special Offers" $189 without

The Kindle Touch differs from the entry level Kindle in that it has a touch screen. This is the PM9 version:D. Instead of pressing a button to turn pages, you simply tap the screen or swipe from right to left. They say the battery in this model lasts two months. I find that a bit hard to believe, but I won't know until I get it. This model won't be released until November 21st.

The Kindle Touch comes in two variants, WiFi and 3G+WiFi. The WiFi only one needs to be connected to a WiFi network to sync with your Amazon account, just like the above mentioned Kindle. The 3G version can sync almost anywhere using a 3G signal from Sprint, or a WiFi network. For the 3G version there is NO monthly fee or contract for the 3G. It comes included in the higher price. Let me say again, there is NO contract. You don't sign anything.

The Kindle Touch is fairly similar to the other Kindle with the exception of the touch screen. You'll have to decide if the touch screen is worth the extra money for you. For me? Yes it is. I'm the same way when I get a new gadget as when I get a new gun. We sit together on the couch and hang out for days on end. So yeah, I want the "cooler" touch screen model.

Let me point something out here that I just noticed. The Kindle without "Special Offers" is $10 MORE than the Kindle Touch Wifi with "Special Offers". Something to think about.

Kindle Fire $199

This, in my opinion, is not an eReader. This is a tablet, kind of like a less expensive iPad. You can watch movies and TV on it. You can surf the web and play games on it. The screen on the Fire is not ideal for reading books. It's got the same type of screen found on the iPad 2. If you read on it for long periods of time you risk eye fatigue. It's also a lot heavier than the other Kindles. It's almost twice the weight as the Kindle Touch. Your arms and fingers might get tired after holding this thing for an hour. The battery also only lasts for up to eight hours, and that's only reading. Try watching TV or movies and Amazon says that it'll last 7.5 hours.

You may be thinking that I don't like the Fire. I do like it. I'm getting one from my girlfriend for Christmas. This thing is gonna be awesome for watching TV and movies on. The screen should be nice and crisp. However, I won't be reading books on it. I'll be getting a Kindle Touch WiFi for that.

If you're an Amazon Prime member you might not know about Amazon's best kept accidental secret. You can watch free TV and movies on your computer anytime you want. You're already paying for it with your Amazon Prime membership, so you may as well take advantage of it. With the Kindle Fire you'll be able to watch these shows and movies right there anytime you want.

If you're in the market for an eReader and don't care about playing games or watching TV shows or movies on the device, then I wouldn't even look at the Fire. The extra money isn't worth it in my opinion.

Old Kindle generation 3

I really see no reason to buy one of these anymore. If you simply must have a physical keyboard, then you're stuck with this one. Other than that, there's no pluses. The screens are not as nice, they're heavier and bigger. Just ask yourself if you really need a physical keyboard.

Barnes and Noble

Now I'll talk to you about the Nook and Nook Color. Barnes and Noble also has the deal with libraries around the country for you to rent books.

Nook Color WiFi-$249
Pretty much the same as the Kindle Fire in that it's less of an eReader and more of a TV/movie/gaming/internet device. I won't get too much into it because they're so similar. Yes, there are some differences, but this post is about eReaders, not tablets.

Nook WiFi-$139
The Nook is almost the same weight as the Kindle Touch. It's got the same size screen, and the battery supposedly lasts the same. After reading up on the Nook and comparing it to the Kindle Touch...they're the same damned thing device wise except that the Nook has no 3G option. The Nook is $20 more, but I expect that price to come down once the Kindle Touch is released. The main differences between the two devices are the bookstores and infrastructures. Barnes and Noble supposedly has more books available, but Amazon is adding thousands more everyday. If you go to Barnes & Noble a lot then you should seriously consider the Nook. You can use your Nook to read books for free while you're in the store and use it to get discounts in the cafe inside of the store.

Wrap-Up
It all boils down to personal preference. If you are already an Amazon user, you might want to look harder at the Kindles. If you also want to watch TV and movies as well as playing games, or especially if you're an Amazon Prime member, take a look at the Kindle Fire. Also, if you require 3G, then the Kindles are your only option. Take note, the Kindle Fire has no 3G model, only WiFi.

If you're a Barnes & Noble person then take a look at the Nook or Nook Color.

O.K., I'm ending this huge post now. I've been researching and typing for about two hours now. Everyone chime in, let's discuss these. I know that I missed some things, and for that I apologize. Please post up and tell me what I missed. If any of you have any questions please feel free to ask. This IS a forum after all, and that's the definition of the word.

Why a Kindle Touch WiFi instead of a Kindle Touch 3G? 3G you can download anywhere. Wifi I gotta be in the right spot.

Do I get a credit for one of the push button phones if I turn in my old rotary dial phone? Kind of hate to give it up, don't see em in the phone stores too much anymore.

There's actually a gun shop up in Oak Harbor, couple hours away that has a rotary dial phone on the counter. It's owned by a couple and their mother works there. Nice old lady, probably in her 80's, still renting guns and racking slides. She won't give it up. It Works! She said they had to have one of them push button gadgets in the back since some places you had to have it to order stuff, guess it's the push 1 for english concept.

Thanks beatlesfan for posting this, as you know (we've sent 26 PM's in the last 24 hours I'm kind of researching so it's really a big help to me and the missus. So far I'm still heavily into the Advil but we'll figure it out.

What's funny is I worked in the central office in my city when push button (tone dial) dialing came in. They charged extra for it because they had to install extra equipment and those lines were routed to that. The older (pulse dial) was a relay setup that would clack with every number (i.e., 9 giving 9 clacks) then "chunk" to actually connect the call. Now everything is tone dial so I suppose they have to have a special "pulse dial" box that translates to tone.

I'm getting the WiFi version because it's cheaper and I don't pay for books so there's no need for me to sync with Amazon except for software updates. :D If I DO need to sync up for some reason, I can just WiFi tether the Kindle to my smartphone.

Also, I don't know what you guys are rambling on about. Rotary phone? Was that what they used before the first iPhone?:D

I still have the first phone I bought after the Ma Bell monopoly was broken up back in the 70's?... a button-to-rotary flip phone (wired) from radio shack. I still use it for testing outlets and stuff... like the interface from the telephone pole to my house. It's yellow, too. I gave up those $5 a month EACH "Princess" pushbutton phones and started saving a bunch. I understand some people still have those things and have spent fortunes ofer the years!!

Now that my wife doesn't drive and needs me to help her to the bathroom, I spend hours waiting at her appointments. She has 2 apts a week most weeks that last over 4 hours. I have been taking a book but find I really don't want to sit there reading that long, so I bought a decent DVD Player. I noe find I also want to check the forums, surf, listen to music, etc.

Today while wandering around Target I saw the Kindle Fire. The best part was a grandson aged young man walked me through it and I could even understand what he said. Since the hospital has WiFi I can do all sorts of things on it. By signing up for Kindle Prime I can stream movies and eBooks for free and place them in my cloud space on Amazon and go back to where I left off later - even on my PC at home.

But I'm not the hip geek I used to be and need your input on this thing. Is it right for what I want to do? Is it a good device?

Thanks..... Linc

I think for what you want to use it for, the Kindle Fire would be perfect. I know you'll be very very happy with it. The build quality is really good on them to.

I think so Old Lincoln. I got my wife one and she plays games with a bunch of people, reads books, etc. Does more than we know how to do but I'm challenged with anything that plugs in.

beatlesfan is the man on this stuff. I got the wife's old pandigital and he's helped me getting stuff on that. I'm still fighting how to get books he sent me out of the computer and into the pandigital but I'll get it some day.

I just finished #1 only cause my wife paid. I'm still working on downloading the ones you sent me. Admittedly not very hard. I need to increase my effort.

Right now I got a German Sig stripped naked in the white and the sweats coming off me more than the old blue.

Sure hope this works..........................

I saw where I can join the cl8ub and get free streaming, but if I get a free book, does it stay on the reader so I can read it offline? I'm all excited about this now but I do need to be able to read in those places without wifi.

I understand that they have some problems, but the one thing I didn't like was no memory card slot. You have to be dependent on the"Cloud". The leftover 2GB of storage isn't much.

I've read three books on my LG Thrive cellular phone. I downloaded the Kindle App for it and it's always with me so I can read or check email. It has 3G which is what I needed while in SW Colorado. I have the Go Phone, Pay As You Go plan... 10¢ a minute with the quarterly $25 plus tax which is automatically paid and rolls over my time. I buy data as needed and it comes off my balance. I still have a balance of over $200 and I must have spent $200 since I got this phone, but it's cheaper for me than $50 or more a month!

I've used the phone to call up emails with coupons to show at the store when I forgot to bring the printed ones.

I would have bought a Vizio Tablet, but those sold out before Christmas. I would rather have a 7 or 8-inch tablet with more room to use the danged onscreen keyboad. My tiny cell phone can really suck with much typing input.

My cell phone does almost everything and the price is low for me. It's fine for me to read books, but I've only read "free" ones so far... from Baen.com... science-fiction.

Interesting day. I bought a new Kindle Fire plus nice holder thing and spent the majority of the rest of the day getting it setup. I had refused till now to set up wireless on my router to remain under the radar. So I worked on it and discovered I have been out of the game so long I didn't have a clue what the acronyms meant. Finally after wearing down all the instructions for the Kindle, the Router and several un-help guides, I guessed at what they meant by the login for the wireless, which of course is called by at least 3 different names depending on what you are reading.

Then I was off to the races setting up email, the link to KahrTalk, Sudoku and looking for free books and videos. I have to buy another cable to download my music. I think I am ready for my long day tomorrow, but am also taking the DVD Player just in case.

If all goes well I will return the DVD Player for a full refund which offsets half the cost of this rig. Of course the Kindle does so much more. Of course I wish I could load, watch then delete my library of movies one at a time. I read you can do that but that's the advanced stuff.

I LOVE my Kindle Fire. I get a free month of Amazon Prime, so I can download free books. There are also stuff on Facebook that you can get free books each day. I love the WiFi because I can have it on during the day and have Facebook up, and have Pandora on during the day instead of having Pandora on my computer at work (which they frown upon). I also can download books. I personally don't mind reading books online. You can also get your subscriptions for your magazines on there as well. I personally am not spending the extra money every year for Prime because we don't buy that much from Amazon. The Fire is a little heavy, but I have something that I put it in that you can stand it up on a table or desk and be hands free.

I'm a lights out at 10PM guy, but last night I kept discovering new things and came up for air very late for me. It takes something really fun to make me do that any more. When I was programming for a living in my home office, I'd get in the zone and hardly look up before 3AM. I miss those days.

I've got one, it's awesome. More ram and expandable storage is why I got it over the kindle fire. I'm not sure how techno savvy you are, but with a little work you can turn it into a full blown android tablet. Well, not yet, but soon. The developers have been hard at work hacking it.

I sent my inherited Pandigital (probably a dinasour?) flying across the room last night. I was already for more Ashes book 2 and it didn't remember my last page, I'd just got done fighting the computer trying to download some embroidery patterns on the new (stupid) computer for the wife who doesn't want to figure out how to do it herself since she has me for a slave. A dumb slave but a slave none the less. I was already techno burnt out, I shouldn't have even tried it. I know I was courting disaster.

I'll find out tonight if it wants to cooperate or eat some lead.

Lot to be said for paper books. And things that don't plug in, or give options, or have moving parts. I guess I really was born 100 years to late.

I'm liking my Kindle Fire more every day. Today I learned I can check out eBooks from the County Library in Kindle format. I looked at their list and about fell out of the chair. They have a ton of books by me favorite authors. And yes I can put them on my Kindle if not direct, through a free program I dl'd to transfer files from my PC to Kindle over a wired USB-Kindle cable.

So exciting I had to tell my BIL who has been feeding my his books. He said I'm going to love it because his son gave him one for Christmas. He has spent $200 on Amazon books so far as he favors first edition expensive books. This is very inexpensive from buying the same as hardbacks. Well, he can afford it but Since I saw what I can get from the library I don't think I need all that stuff.

Well it's comforting to me having an expert such as yourself confirm that I'm an expert at recognizing crap when I see it.
My wife didn't listen to me when I gave her the suggestion to get the touch, made (yeah I'm whupped) me get her the Fire. She does all kinds of stuff and plays games with other people which I didn't know it would do so maybe it was a good choice for her.
I like the screen on the Touch better for just reading which is all I plan to do with it. I do like the 2 easy steps, literally 10 seconds. That means that with half a bottle of advil, a couple days and a semester of computer school even I might be able to download them books. You left out even a cave man can do it but I read that between the lines. I got one that lives down the street, I'll let him do it if I get stuck.

I so do understand this. But....I finally caved and bought into Kindle full time about a year ago. No more paper that ends up stored in the basement where you can't find it again and no more running out of reading material half way through a trip.

Hang in there...if I can do it, you can do it.

Might be worth noting that the Kindle Fire is more of a tablet than an ereader. It's backlit and causes eye strain like a computer screen. True ereaders are not backlit and do not strain the reader's eyes. Something to think about for anyone looking to buy an ereader.

My Nook has been great for trips. Load up before I leave home and if I do run out of new stuff and reread what I have stored. Or go online, download some free books and then load into the Nook.

However, the Kindle would probably been a better choice for me as I travel out of the country quite a bit.

Do you have one? The comfort of reading my Fire is remarkable. Even my BIL who is alone except for several hundred books, reads a few every week. He had an early ereader and didn't like it. He was surprised with a Fire for Christmas and has already read 20 or more books. He told me he was amazed at how comfortable reading on it is. I's just getting started but I have to agree so far. BTW, you can adjust the brightness level which may be good in a low lit environment.

My wife ignored my request for a Kindle Touch WiFi for 99 bucks and got me a Kindle Touch 3G Wireless for 189. I think it still has the good reading screen and the capability to download books from anyplace.
Don't figure I'm worth that much but she did it anyhow.
I didn't have quite the 99 so she went 189. Wives, ya gotta love em.
Already sent out an SOS to beatlesfan. Not sure me and technology are meant to be in the same room.

Just an FYI, the Pandigital did in fact work last night after the brief flight across the room the night before. I read it for awhile. Maybe I skeered it into submission.

One more thing I've learned is they tell you it can do this and that but leave out the part about limitations. Some things cannot be done on 3G and while there is a lot of wifi not many hotspots with good speed. At the hospital I can do this but not streaming video. I rented a movie and it took 2 hrs to download.

I'm also discovering which doctors have wifi ... not many. But its still very nice and I'm glad I have it.

The Fire is Wi Fi? I thought it was 3G since you can do your email and play games and stuff. Man am I technology challenged.

The Fire is only WiFi. There's no 3G options like in the other Kindles.

@Bawanna: Your Kindle will have the exact same screen as in the WiFi only touch. The ONLY difference is yours is 3G and will have a higher resale value. :D Slightly worse battery life to, but you should still get a full month or so on a full charge.

I got my fingers crossed. I think I'm gonna dig it. I hope the reading screen isn't too much better than the wifes fire, she'll steal it from me for sure. Plan to give it a test run when I get home. Hers doesn't seem to be too bad but I guess when the touch is better is outside, no glare and such.

If I can make it work without a headache I'll wear sunglasses if I have too. BUT I've heard the screen is really cool, just like a paper page.

Who knows maybe in my next life I'll qualify for the geek squad. NOT.

It does look just like paper. I couldn't believe it at first. The touch is a lot better for reading books, but the fire is better for everything else. If she steals it just steal her fire:D

Just purchased a Kindle Touch for the wife's up coming hospital stay and her birthday. I'm not exactly a tech savy guy, more nuts and bolts. I've been on Amazon for the last hour or so trying to download the first book. At first it was pending and now it's processing. What the hell is up?

If it takes this long to download a book, this thing will be taking a trip back to where it came from.

A little help would be greatly appreciated.

If it takes more than a minute to download there's something wrong. If you have bad Internet signal that could cause it, or a problem on amazon's end.

Thanks beatlesfan! I've came to the conclusion that it's a bad internet signal. I now tap into my neighbors wireless system and pay for 1/2 the bill. My laptop only picks up 3 out of 5 bars on signal strength. The Kindle may not pick it up at all. We have limited internet service in our rural area. I guess I could go to my daughters house to download any books I want on the Kindle.

Thanks again!

Well, must have apps, books, etc.?

Apps I say Tapatalk.

Books:
"A Covert War" by Michael Parker *****
also ran: "Lt Commander Molly Sanders" ***

I read at least parts of several that I didn't find good but I'm sure the authors were trying. I did discover that local libraries lend ebooks. I was shocked to see big name popular authors with top selling books there. I'll be checking those out further when I get my library card.

My BIL likes big authors and new releases and he's burned through $200 on books since Christmas. It's so easy to buy you can get carried away.
