View Full Version : Blissful Day at the Range

Well a quick report on a near perfect day at the range. Went to Norpoint which Scoundrel is familar with.
Myself, both boys and a pile of 45's.
Got there a little later than I like about 12:30 but the place was barren. Had nearly a whole bay to ourselves for most of the afternoon, the guy put most of the people in the next bay, NICE.
Right from the get go, the guy at the counter was a good guy, pretty much whatever you want to each of my confirmation questions. First guy I've seen working there that had a 1911 KImber instead of a Glock or an XD. Told him I'd bring him some handles next trip.
Per my usual practice I shot my CBob and PM45 right from carry condition without any prep, just the way they been carried for the last 2 months, too long. Nice groups, no boggles, all good.
Had my Para LDA compact, took the G21 to knock the dust off it, my son's Springfield V12, damn that shot good today. Colt Huntsman and my Smith 41. Nothing broke, everything just great.
Even bought a new scope for my Savage 17HMR, it shot so well, dime size groups at 25 yards it just deserved better than my 60's vintage Bushnell. Got a 3-9x 40 BSA made for the 17, so should be alot better light for indoors and better all around outside too.
WE rented a Ruger LCR just for grins since I'd never played with one. I didn't like it much. It was the 38 only model and it looked good and felt good but everyshot was like a ball peen hammer to my trigger finger, a blast of gas in the face and the Mag Tech ammo supplied with it was pretty warm as is customary. I couldn't hit anything with it for beans.
The 3 of us shot up the box of 50 and happily gave it back. My oldest was talking the 357 version all the way up there and was thrilled to see one in the rental case. I can't imagine shooting that thing in 357, would hurt equally bad on both ends.
Anyhow it was one of the best days at the range, kind of unplanned, kind of a lets load up and go deal and it was good medicine.
I'm a bad boy for not taking pictures or evidence photos, I'll try to do better in the future.
Better get to cleaning and see if I got some mounts for that new scope.

I'm glad you had a great day with your sons. I haven't shot anything in a week. :(

Now THAT'S a father's day! Glad you had a terrific day as I know the "boys" did also.
My son took off for a few days vacation doing what he loves best, nature photography. He's going to the national parks in Idaho, but bet he also stops at a few more spots along the way. He's really good and becoming better known in that industry. But like making grips, it's difficult to live on what you make, so it's just an expensive hobby.

I haven't shot since August with everything going on so it was long long overdue and it was good therapy. Sad that its back to work tomorrow already.
Oh well, it was a good day.

That is great. Times like that are memorable long afterwards.
Your analysis of the .357 LCR is correct. Sure hurts on the hand end anyway. Might not hurt for long on the muzzle end.:)

Very good. It's nice that you and your sons got some time together at the range... and that it went well.
I didn't go this past week and need to take Boomer and start getting familiar with "him" again, after all the time I spent with the new P40. I can see something to do with a dragon if I need a name for it.... :D
The trouble with having more than a couple of guns is that some get "neglected" and I need to get really handy with the PM45 if I'm hoping to impress anyone this Christmas... favorably, this time. The Kahrs all shoot alike, but there's something special about the PM45 bucking in my hands... and the S.E. Grin that accompanies it.

Glad it went well for you at Norpoint.
They're good people, I think. I rigged up a tripod mount for my S&W M&P 15/22, and asked them if I could set it up in there. They didn't bat an eyelash, said that's fine as long as I leave the bench in place and just stand back a bit further if the tripod goes all of the way to the ground (as opposed to a short tripod that sits on the bench).
That tripod makes it a heck of a lot easier to assemble the rifle, hold it steady, change magazines, disassemble it, etc.
Anyway, I just bought a 1 year membership for $200 so I don't have to cough up range fees every time. I can just go when the mood takes me. I should note the visits in my calendar though, so that when the year is done I can verify that I got my money's worth.
I only have to visit 14 times (pistol shooting) to make it worthwhile though, and I have already gone twice including the visit when I paid for it.
If I get a centerfire rifle, then the visits will add up faster because they normally want $20/visit when you shoot those.

How about "Dragon Breath?" Fire, flames, hot, loud, dangerous.

DB was the most obvious, but is too used much. I don't feel compelled to name all of my guns, but the PM45 was a long awaited gun... not the all stainless steel K45 that I dreamed of, but the next best thing and better for concealed carry.
I went ahead and renewed my range membership because if I paid by the visit, I would think about the cost and not go as often. With the membership already paid, I'm more apt to get my "money's worth" and go more often... getting more trips for less money. Of course, there's the ammo cost! I do what I can to buy at the lowest price online or local, but good deals online with no tax and little or no shipping costs keeps my ammo cost minimal. I'm always looking for good deals... actively searching on just checking out deals mentioned here. For the right price I'm ready to buy from 500 to 1,000 rounds.

Bawanna, I'm glad you checked out the LCR. I'll steer clear of that gun. Great concept, but not good in the execution, huh?

Not for me. As I said it looked good and felt good in the hand. It was pretty light, easy to carry but it was obnoxious to shoot even in 38 and I couldn't hit nothing even close. No doubt if I spent more time and my trigger finger could survive long enough I could manage the trigger better. The pull wasn't terribly hard just different.
First gun I think I ever rented and I'm glad I did. I wouldn't purchase one but my son was thinking about it and I considered it for the wife. Scratched off my list and I'm a pretty devout Ruger fan, have many. Like em alot, just not this one.

Just got back from the range myself.
Tried out the S&W 640-1 with -
Remington Golden Saber 125 grain 1200 fps
Winchester PDX1 Defender 125 grain 1325 fps
Hornady Critical Defense FTX 125 grain 1500 fps
All accurate.
But no quick follow up shots with any of them.
The 2" gun is a cannon with all 357 mag loads for me.
If it's going to be a hand cannon I'll load it like one.
With the 1500 fps tactical nuke load.
With the 1500 fps Hornady, and a 2 inch barrel,
I'm guessing I'm getting something like 1240 fps and 400+ energy?
Anyway, got XS Big Dots on the way.
Along with a Stainless Steel trigger.
As a side note:
Shot about 4 boxes of 40 with my G27 and three big sticks.
The firepower from a handgun at close range is amazing.
It's like having two buddies with me in the firefight!
1000 rounds of Winchester Ranger arrive tomorrow - Woo Hoo!
Update: No sights, point shooting, rapid fire, double taps -

Right on Wynn! I guess you can call me "MO" for Mr. Obvious. I thought it was clever but didn't consider it may have been used before (Look, Shiny!).
Like you, I renewed my annual membership to the indoor range ($150) because I wouldn't shoot much otherwise. It's an encouragement to go more often and the breakeven against pay as you go is 13 trips a year. I find I go more often and shoot less per trip. Paying each visit I found I would mindlessly shoot 100+ rds and now I may shoot only 3 mags very studiously to hone my skills.
I was told a very long time ago something I repeated to my son and now his kids. "Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect." That is especially true of shooting and the muscle memory stuff. I am most concerned with the first mag as I may not get to the second in a gun fight, then correct flaws in the first one the next two. Then go home and laser practice between sessions occasionally.
Thanks to Bawanna's generosity, I now reload target rounds with his Rockchucker single stage press. That's $6 per 50rds of good ammo vs at least $12 (with shipping) on-line of the cheapest. That puts a trip to the range at $5 including gas. I can do that.

LOL.
Soooo true.
With three Big Sticks and a loader I can tear through some ammo.
Need to pace myself.
But it's so much fun....

Almost like having two sons shooting with you. We burned about 500 45's yesterday in a couple hours along with a pile of 22's.
Great fun though and I'd happily run the press every night so I could do that everyday if I had the loot.
It was a great day. Great evening too, with nothing on TV anymore I spent the evening in my man cave watching Shooter and fondling and cleaning guns and putting stuff away. That wasn't bad either. Pleasant in fact.
Wife wasn't even ticked that I bought the scope for the 17, even replaced part of the cash so I wasn't walking around destitute like normal.
Must have been a full moon.

October Full Moon - LOL!
I couldn't believe the 640-1 I have been hunting local and internet for months
just shows up in front of me a a local gunshow for $525.
I offer $500 and the seller counter offers "let me make your day - how about $489?
Are you kidding me?
That just doesn't happen.
This is a strange and wonderful time indeed...

Sounds like a great day alright. Unplaned with your sons shooting a pile of 45's Hail what could possibly be a better thing to do with the boys? Well at least that you can tell mom about anyway.:D

I did have to back up and replay several parts numerous times just to do a thorough job of critiquing her acting abilities. I'm happy to report she did fine. Great actor, hope we get so SEE much more of her.

As do I! I like the way she got "even" with the guy who raped her! She needed an extended capacity magazine.
