View Full Version : PM45 - any reason not to?
JohnR

For no good reason whatsoever, I have it stuck in my head that I want a very small .45 and the PM45 is the only one that meets my definition of "very small."
It seems my pinky would be about half on the pinky rest. Should I expect it to be uncomfortable to shoot? Harder to control for follow up shots? Wicked recoil? I'm still pondering if 5+1 is what I want to walk around with, too.
For reference, my K9 is just about the perfect pistol in terms of feel, carry-ability and shootability.
I'd hate to spend all that money and then find out it's not the gun for me. If I find one to borrow, I'll try it out, but forget about renting one around here.

Recommend Pinky under mag ---use two finger grip.
Bawanna
10-27-2011, 04:42 PM
I get most of my fingers on the grip, if not all. Without the little extra base it would be a pinky under scenario.
I don't find mine uncomfortable to shoot at all. The 45 is a slow meaningful push rather than an obnoxious crack supersonic launch. Much more pleasant than my K40 even with the 40 being all steel.
I think many are surprise how pleasant they really are. I've let others shoot mine and usually the first comment is "This is a 45?".
Be nice to find one to try but I think you'd like it just fine.

My budget is way tighter, so I have been looking at the Taurus PT745. Single stack, 6+1, 20.8 oz, just about exactly the same size as a CW9, good reviews and forum comments about it, and Bud's has it for $352 shipped. It has a thumb safety, but is just as safe to carry as the Kahr with a similar trigger pull, so I wouldn't use it when carrying.

Mine was a two finger grip, but I never found it troublesome. I thought it shot very well, actually. The only reason I haven't replaced it yet is that I'm still hoping for a CM45.

I don't find my pm45 unpleasant to shoot at all, actually it is fun. of my .45's it is next to the smallest, smallest being an amt backup 45. that one is definately more of a handful to shoot. I like 45's and have quite a few, and can think of no good reason not to have the pm45

This is unacceptable.
I handled a PM45 today, and was drawn to it like a magnet. What a little jewel of a .45.
I also gave the CW45 another try, and I concede that I do like it too. The low-budget slide engraving turns me off, which is purely aesthetic and a silly reason not to like it, but I'm a snob I guess. :o
What I'm looking for is the smallest .45 that's still a good shooter, but the price difference is insane and it holds one less round, though it does take larger mags.
If only I could buy 'em both and return the one I don't like...

Remember it's a 45. 6 is enough. The PM will go places the CW might struggle with but not much, pretty much a draw in that respect with a slight advantage to the pm.
It does take 1911 mags, at least mine does ok with Wilson 47D's. Others will sometimes run but not lock open, etc.
Your a snob so I see a PM45 in your future. Guns are alot like cars, motorcycles and even women. If they aren't aesthetically pleasing what's to love. I'm sometimes a snob too. I try not to dwell on it though.

It holds 5+1 .45 which is only 1 less than my 6+1 Pm9. Your 6=1380gn to my 7=1029gn and makes a hole big as Abilene. I'd take that over my PM9 any day.

Yeah, I'm circling all right. :o
I actually don't see any advantage of the PM45 over my K9, other than it makes bigger holes. They're virtually the same size, the K9 holds more but the PM45 weighs less.
This means that whe-
Lemme try this again. This means IF I buy a PM45 it will be 'cause I feel like it and have lots of disposable income. :p

Exactly right, don't want to leave any of that disposable income around for the vultures to fight over when they nail the lid down.
Whe.......If you buy the PM45 you'll notice right away it has some definite weight advantages. And did we mention the bigger holes?
Make no mistake, the K9 is a great gun, maybe even the best ever but don't forget that disposable income. Especially now in these trying times. Spend it or send it to me, I'll help.
I had disposable income once. I think it was 271 dollars I could spend mindlessly. I think that's the year we got a new dryer.

Absolutely!
Everybody get your bait in the water, I think we're into a school of PM45 fish. Kind making me want a second one. Crap. I better look for me some of that disposable income. Is there a program for that?

Bawanna, you're killin' me here. You can't get two PM45s, that's not your fair share. I'm going to Occupy Worcester until I get my fair share of PM45s.
I've more or less found that all income is disposable. Everything we buy is just fleeting materialism. If I don't spend the money on a new gun, my wife will just spend it on silly things like groceries and bills.

wait just a minute here......john says the k9 is just about the perfect pistol in terms of feel, carryability and shootability. did somebody say the pm45 is nearly the same size as a k9??? john also mentions the pinky finger thing so he must be at least somewhat concerned and/or opposed to the 2 finger grip...at least, that's my take.
so...with this said, a pm45 is going to feel like a k9 in terms of getting a full 3 finger grip??? i have my doubts. of course, that's assuming one can get a full 3 fingers on a k9. as for shootability , a pm45 shoots as good as a k9???
now for carryability......i'm guessing john should be thrilled with a pm45 after carrying a k9. this i can buy. the other areas that he's questioning.....not so much.
of course, i reply to this thread bringing ABSOLUTELY NO FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE....only jumping in the middle because i might, i repeat (bawanna) MIGHT be considering a pm45.

Very questionable. But I do have a K40, near clone of the K9 in all area's. Weight, size, grip etc.
I also have a PM45. The PM is with me always without question. The K40 is languishing in toy box purgatory.
The K9 again is great but the PM 45 to me is a perfect carry gun.
JohnR has a real hankering and disposable income and far be it from me to rain on his parade. Ya know.

Stop it! I already have a CW9 and a CW45 and now, thanks to all of you, I want the PM45. Dang, I finally talked myself outta the CM9 but I will probably be helpless if and when the CM45 comes out. Will this kinda want ever end????
I'll do you one better. I went P45, and got it all dolled up with DLC and night sights. Full three finger grip, and it shoots in one hole at 25 feet. The perfect companion to my PM9!
JohnR
11-02-2011, 07:56 AM
Oh, don't get me going on the P45!
About two vs. three fingers, that's how I measure scotch. Three is better than two. I can do three on my K9, and I could do three on the PM45 but my pinky was right in the middle of the mag floor plate piece. If they made a pinky extension it would be perfect. I just like a nice firm place for my pinky to curl around.
Bawanna, does your K40 languish in the toy box because of its weight, or because it's not as fun to shoot as the PM45? Those are the metaphysical questions that sway me.
The trouble here is, the CW45 is also nearly exactly the size of the K9, holds one more round than the PM45, and leaves enough money on the table for four boxes of WWB.
Damn you, Justin Moon, for making too many good guns. :( :)
Bawanna
11-02-2011, 10:23 AM
Both actually. The weight is noticeable but not a huge issue. The big thing for me is the 45 is much more pleasant to shoot. The K40 is magna ported even but still has a flip. Before everyone calls me a girlyman, I can shoot that 40 all day long without crying or even whining but the muzzle flip just doesn't blow my dress up.
A fellow scotch man too, you might as well order up that P or PM 45, your hooked. My bottle ran dry the other night, I need a new one.

Yep, sold locally... Still don't know what to replace it with, but I'm leaning toward a S&W 442 for variety. I was strong set to get a CZ Rami, but it's not much different in size than my XDM Compact so I scratched that idea.

Mine works perfectly with Wilson 47D 8 rounders. For some reason my Officer size Wilson mags don't lock the slide on empty but feed and fire. Everything is the same, has to be spring pressure or something.
Others have had mixed success with other brands of 1911 mags. Wynn has tested several mag, spring, follower combinations.

Banana, I have not had the same luck....my mags, Wilson 47d rub on the bottom of the slide on my P45, haven't trident the M yet, also had lightly dress the mag. Catch engagement rectangular hole on the side closest to the top.

Is Jocko back?
I didn't do anything to my Wilson mags since they work so well in my 1911's. I heard some work in the Kahrs so I gave them a try and they worked without modification. Why the officer size doesn't is a mystery.
I really wasn't look for a mag alternative, just gave them a try. Now the extra mags I carry for my 1911 I know will work as spares for the PM45. Maybe I just got lucky or something.

nunnya, that's a damn good question and I wish I had an answer for you. To be honest I don't think I ever tried the Dan Wesson mags in the Dan Wesson. I used Wilsons from the get go.
I'll sure take them with me (if I can find them) next range trip and see if they work in either.

Oh man, now I'm under pressure!
We have to replace our heat pump before it gets cold. PM45, or heat pump. The family has plenty of sweaters and heavy blankets. But then, I have other guns...
I suppose I could compromise and get a CW45.
Or get that Bersa UC45 I mentioned a while ago. :p
JohnR
11-09-2011, 12:38 PM
I think I got this figgered out.
What I want is a small discreet carry piece. The PM45 is that. But with only 5+1 there are times I'll feel better with more rounds. So instead of rotating between two guns I'll just get the Kahr 7 round mag with finger grip, keep it loaded, and if I'm heading downtown just swap mags.
And thus I save the cost of buying two guns. Voila, I saved $400!
Hey, that logic works for my wife, somehow. ;)

John,
I've been pondering for the past 4 months and it's still NOT clear which Kahr I should buy. In fact, things seem to be getting muddier. I'm so confused, I no longer ask myself "which caliber" or "do I want night sights". Instead, I'm looking for the perfect pistol with 4 wheel drive and tilt wheel options.
If I had to guess, you're absolutely over-thinking this decision on how to satisfy your urge. I think you should be more decisive. What's wrong with you???
BTW, what's your reasoning for NOT wanting a PM9? I hear they are "very small" as you said you wanted and give you an extra round or two over the PM45.
JohnR
11-09-2011, 01:48 PM
I already have enough nines, small and not so small, and carry one of 'em every day. But believe me I have thought about the CM9 a little bit.
There are only three guns I've been considering, one I think will be too heavy for EDC (heavier than my K9), one will be just like my K9 only lighter and one less round (CW45), but the PM45 is the right size for what I want, the caliber I want, and versatile with different mags. The only reason I haven't ordered one is money is tight.
I'm not particularly turned on by night sites or black slides so at least those decisions aren't holding me hostage.

I'm right there with you John. I've been talking myself out of "upgrading" from a perfectly good PM9 to a PM40. Be strong until the right deal shows up on your future PM45. I'm positive you will end up with one.
kahrlover123
11-10-2011, 09:30 AM
I've shot all the PMs and decide to take PM9 as concealed carry.
My reason is simple. I only need this for 3-5 yards encounting situation.
If you hit the right spot it will do enough damage to stop the attacker.
.45 may be a little too much and it might "go through" to others.
One thing you need to seriously consider is the "follow shots" and the "consequences" of the shots.
If it's at home, it's different story. I have my 1911 and shotguns for that purpose :D
JohnR
11-10-2011, 01:19 PM
Wahl now, KL123, I was just googling up some internet lore on 3" barrels and .45ACP ballistics this morning, and the shorter barrel might just reduce the chance of overpenetration.
I think it's all theory, and I'm not worried about it.
In fact, I got a check in the mail today, so as soon as it's deposited I may just do something foolish...
Bawanna

Quick! Set the hook. We got him. Fish fry tonight!!!!!!
I'd be far less worried about over penetration with a 45 than a 9 and certainly a 40. It's fat, it's slow, it's devastating. The 9 is fast, it's skinny, it's obnoxious like a mosquito. Deadly mosquito but still obnoxious.
Any of that check left over when your done being bad, you just let ole bawanna know. I can help.

Bawanna, you need a technology upgrade. Nowadays, we use PayPal instead of checks in the mail. Free secure account. Almost instant money transfers. And free if it is specified as a gift. I just sold an AGrip grip enhancer, got the payment in PayPal (he forgot to specify it as a gift, so it cost me 94¢), and transferred the balance to my bank account. All done securely.
JohnR
11-10-2011, 02:49 PM
But you have to lie to Paypal and tell them it's something other than a firearm. "Gift" usually works.
With what's left I'm ordering the 7 round mag (only $30 at Cheaper than Dirt, who also has the PM45 for $646) and a Fobus holster for my K9 for IDPA fun. I'll Paypal Bawana the rest, just enough to buy few new red wigglers.

Jfootin, you lost me at the part about bank account.
I use to keep the loot in the mattress (always secure) then I got married and found the pillow case was plenty big enough, then the kids came along and there hasn't been any need for money storage since.
JustinN will be learning this soon if he hasn't already.
Actually JohnR, my night job is making fishing lures so you just spend the whole wad, I got plenty of red wigglers. Thanks for the thought though.
