View Full Version : Recoil Spring Size Difference

So I think most of you know about my past issues with the CM9 (nosedive, sent back, they cut recoil spring only, now works flawless). I decided to order a new recoil assembly so I could have one extra and also cut the spring to match the same size as Kahr cut on the CM9 before I shot it too much and the spring condensed (hope I explained that OK). I just got the recoil assembly and I am FLOORED at the difference in size. To the experts here: My intention was to cut the coils to match what Kahr sent me but good Lord that is a lot of extra coils. I am still planning on doing this but does the difference in size shock anyone else here? I can't tell you if they cut that much off when I sent it in the first time. The TOP picture is the spring that Kahr reworked and sent back to me (works 100%). The BOTTOM picture is the recoil assembly I just got in the mail from Kahr.
EDIT: Ok, after looking at it I guess it is only a few coils. So I probably overreacted but handling side by side it seemed like a huge difference.

Its only one coil longer. The upper one must already be getting a set. There might be some variability in the strength of the springs, so the new one might not need to be shortened. I would wait until I put it in and see how it works. Then take some off if needed.

Looks like two coil difference to me.

well actually the bottom spring has 15 coils and that is the propper spring the upper one has 13 coils. No doubt the 15 coil one will never take the pre-set of what ur looking at with the 13 coil spring. It will take a set though. Personaly if I was u and the gun is working great with the 13 coil that kahr supposably cut back, the leave it in the gun. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If u want to screw around at the range with the 15 coil one to see how it acts in your cm9 which according to every knowledeable person inside at kahr the 15 coil is the propper spring for the cm9 and Pm9 new style slide. but we know that many have a hell of a time inserting the 15 col spring and then some state they cannot even lock the slide open with the 15 coil spring. I think there is some truth to that to, But I bet if one get s 100+ rounds down range with the 15 coil spring it will shoot itself in and be OK as designed. There is no doubt a 13 coil shorter spring will work and go in easier--duh??? IT IS SHORTER. Maybe at the worst of it all the spring life might be shorter but again if it works and the gun does its think in locking back and ejecting and feeding perfect, then hell leave it alone. some guns are quirkier than others. two identical springs can possably be diffrerent also. At best the 13 coil spring will be easier to hand rack over the 15 coil spring.
I will tell you this, if the 13 coil spring is working great, then why not just go to the wolffs gunsprings site and order the PM9 20# outter recoil spring for your cm9 and you wll then have still the shorter 13 coil set up for easy installation but you have increased the recoil outter spring from factory 18# to 20.5#. That should give u one ideal set up for ur cm9. keep that 15 coil spring back for what ever. I shoot the 20.5# outter spring in my old style PM9 slide and love it. What does it do different u might ask?? If anything u should get longer life out of that spring. felt recoil could be less but hardly noticeable in my ported PM9, but spring life in theory should be longer.
and with wolffs u can just buy the outter spring and not get ripped off by kahr to have to buy the entire assembly which is not needed. I think I have replaced two complete recoil assemblys in my PM9 with 32 K through it and many times just the outter spring. works for me..
now i was one who used to think that if the factory made it, then don't fokk with it, but we know the factory has indeed shortened some of the recoil springs, so it is evident that sometimes that is the fix. About the same way we have noticed a very few who had done some mod work to the extracor tension to get much better results. All guns even the same models are just different in some degree or another.
This past week I have posted two complete different reports from kahr direct about the recoil spring issue and gotten two different answers. so if ur gonna ask kahr prepaore to get totally confused, for it is who u talk to at that particular time as to what answer ur gonna get. Go with what works in YOUR GUN.. If u shoot alot, normally ur gun will let u know when it is time to change springs.

Hog Hunter,
I received a new replacement recoil spring assembly for my CM9 and it was one full coil longer than the original and quite a bit stiffer. I was having extraction problems and the slide was failing to return to full battery. My CM9 now runs like it was in the Indy 500. I ran one hundred rounds of mixed ammo through it without a single failure.

Unannounced design change? Or maybe just some special springs that they bring out of the Kahr secrets box to solve such problems?

Same deal with mine. I sent it back and they shortened the recooil spring by two coils. I think this may be the fix we've been looking for. There may stillb e some magazine issues out there but I have magazines that now work, and a gun that feeds properly!
But, I've decided that I was wrong to go with 9mm and am now looking for a Glock 36. So, if anyone is interested in a nice PM9 at a good price...

List it with good pics in the For Sale section and someone will snap it up.
