......carry a k9 in a silent thunder iwb? pros/cons? would you prefer a crossbreed mini tuck?

Either would work very well but personally I'd opt for the Silent Thunder. I find the other difficult for me to put on and take off. Seems like alot of holster real estate for such a small gun. That being said they are both very comfortable.

IMHO, the silent thunder would not give enough support if you are very active. The Mini-Tuck and its variants give more support and spread the weight more.
Bawanna is right, the Mini-Tuck is harder to take on and off. But then, is that a bad thing? :)
Personally I like the all leather holsters - just my taste - like I like my rifles to have fine wood vs the plastics. :p
Lobo makes a very fine holster at a reasonable price, as do many others.

North Star Holsters (http://northstarholsters.com/IWB.html) have some very reasonably priced 2 clip IWBs in leather and leather lined Kydex, so you can go either way on the material.

somewhere here on the forum, i recall reading that a pm9 was about at the maximum weight a person would want in a slient thunder. anything heavier would be best carried in a cbmt-like holster. just checkin......

Ron can correct me, but it seems like the Silent Thunder first caught on with the 1911's. The first magazine article review I read was for 1911's (http://ezine.m1911.org/tucker2.htm). It's a good read and you'll see lots of 1911 pics. One thing is it is called the Tucker Gunleather Silent Thunder due to a marketing agreement Garrett had with Tucker until Tucker sold his business. It was always Garrett but starting out they built on Tucker's name. It is the same holster by the same people, just under the Garrett name now. Here's another review in the 1911 forum (http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=275829).
For an interesting read see their Garrett News page (http://garrettindustries.mybigcommerce.com/pages/Garrett-News.html) that talks a bit about their history. You'll see their heavy involvement with tactical forces and their pride in America come through.
The 1911 in a Silent Thunder needs a good stiff belt as it does put the weight on one clip, but it is good and many like it. The K9 would be a walk in the park.

Really??
I find that very surprising since our number one seller is the ST IWB for the 5 inch 1911, followed closely by full size glocks with the Kahr PM9 coming in third. There are two trains of thought on holster making, 1. spread the weight around so even if the customer has a not so good belt, you will not get sag on one side. And 2. Minimize the footprint of the holster so as not to create a big sweatpoint on the body and provide for easy on/off. Something that comes in really handy when you are in and out of federal buildings, courthouses, police stations, interview rooms, post offices, etc. One hook or two really has nothing to do with stability as the function of the mount point is just that, a mount point. Merely something to keep the firearm from sliding down into your pants. Our clientele list is full of tier one personell that have tried everything out there and then come to us. Our number one asset is customer feedback and the Silent Thunder as it is today is the product of five years of input from you guys and others. I am off my rant now. :)
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. If you want two mounting points you can also do this. http://garrettindustries.mybigcommerce.com/silent-thunder-iwb-with-tuckable-belt-loops/

Happy Sunday, Ron. I didn't know you had the belt loop option on the Silent Thunder. That resolves any question if there was one about it. If you don't like the single clip get the double.

i'm now on a mission to find the post(er) who mentioned the pm9 was at about the max weight for the silent thunder. geez, i hope i don't come up empty. could it be i'm getting old??????

I carry my 1911 in the Silent Thunder with the standard clip and no issue at all. My PM45 feel almost unnoticeable when I wear it in it's Silent Thunder.
And this coming from a guy who really in NOT a IWB guy. During the week I wear an OWB from Mernickle but trying a Silent Thunder OWB is on my to do list one of these days too.
We had a guy a couple years ago who tried to stir the pot and make a policy at our dept where all off duty and back up holsters had to have a thumbreak.
Thumbreaks are just to keep guns from falling out of poor fitting holsters. I had Kramer holsters send us his feelings which thankfully mirrored my own.
I only mention this because my guns feel solid as a rock in the silent thunder or I wouldn't wear em.
I'd have no qualms about jumping out of an airplane wearing them if I was into jumping out of airplanes but since I'm not and don't plan to take it up any time soon you get the point.

popgoestheweasel, I'll vouch for them, you can take it to the bank and draw interest he's not a poser. I missed your earlier post and only caught it when Mr. Garrett replied.
The real deal and I for one am real glad him and hopefully his wife Sheryl have joined our little circus.
All business's should use them as a model. They do it right.
Edited to add- Reading between the lines in one of my emails to Sheryl it did seem that she did have the bigger office and accompanying authority.
I'm sure Ron still wears the pants in the family, she just picks em out.

You're welcome to move, just leave the PRK at the border of that state. I'll even go as far to say that I'd have no problem showing you around here and taking you to the range.

boy, the guy who posted this statement must be a real idiot. i've searched all over this forum to find testimony supporting this "maximum weight" statement about the silent thunder. NOTHING. imagine that. my apoligies go out to Mr. Ron....and his boss, Mrs. Garrett.
after more thorough research, i believe this idiot may have been referring to a Crossbreed MicroClip holster as being 'unsuitable' for anything heavier than a pm9........although, on their website, it states the MK series Kahr would be suitable for a CB MicroClip.
regardless, i'm definitely going to purchase a silent thunder and give it a whirl on my mk9. surely it will work for my 'yet to be purchased' pm9. as for the k9 i'm 'thinking of purchasing', i'm guessing it's another silent thunder.

Aw, Pop. You're not an idiot, at least not compared to me. If I don't step into it at least weekly I'm not trying. Just remember there's only two rules, 1. Don't sweat the small stuff, 2. It's all small stuff.

Just remembered an old video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17J7bRHSikw) demonstrating how rugged the Silent Thunder Holster is. Ron puts it to the test pitting the holster against a Hummer. Guess who wins.

Thanks OL for trying to spruce up my image but I'm afraid there's no helpin' with that assignment....I've already posted nearly 100 remarks on this forum. As they say, I think the train has already left the station.
Perhaps had I taken the blinders off when I was visiting the garrettindustries website for the 28th time, I might have been able to dispute my own unfounded suspicion....but NO, I was too busy thinking. I never bothered noticing the silent thunder holsters pictured for piano's, sailboats....they even have a s t holster for a machine gun complete with lights. Duhhhhh, I'd say they'll work okay for that 'ultra-heavy' k9.
Again, I apologise for raising such a stupid question. As for your rules....I've heard it said (here I go again), 'Don't sweat the petty stuff AND don't pet the sweatty stuff'. Either way, I'm learning one of the most dangerous buttons on chat forums is the 'submit post/reply' button. Maybe Ron will give me a 2% discount...just for mentioning 'silent thunder' here on KT???

I have little doubt he'll do just that. In fact I'd bet his boss Sheryl would do even better than that. That's the kind of people they are.
Without the submit post/reply button it would be pretty boring around here. I know I often type something out and then think better of it, it's called restraint. I'm obviously not very good at it and my keyboard frequently outruns my small brain with reckless abandonment.
Let us know when your Silent Thunder arrives. Pictures are always good.

You know, if you Go Advanced or Quote a post, you have the Preview Post button, which I use to review a post before submitting it. If nothing else, hit the Edit button. I can't count how many times I have posted one, immediately saw an error and quickly hit Edit to correct it.
And, like you, Bawanna, I have had second thoughts and hit the back button instead of posting. Of course, there are a few times that I should have done that and didn't. :40:

in this case, 'preview post' wouldn't have saved me from being an idiot. i could have previewed my comment for 3 days and still posted it. i find spell check to be a useful tool as well......the only thing about spell check that doesn't work well for me is i NEVER seem to get close enough on the first try. you've gotta be in the ball park for it to work as designed.
