View Full Version : Here's a project I've been working on

As you know, I've just gotten into competing at GSSF matches. Just did one in Charleston this past weekend. I improved over my first match, but I'm still not anywhere near the top or middle of the pack for that matter.

Anyway, one of the courses of fire consists of six 8" round steel plates. So, I thought I would build my own. If I bought one, it would cost $800 or more. So far, this one is still under $200.

The plates were $85 delivered, then $52 to have door hinges welded on the bottom of them. The sawhorse kits were $15. The 2x4's were left over from a previous project. The boards that the plates are mounted on were from a bookcase that I took apart. Last, add about $20 in gate hinges and 3" bolts. I'll probably buy about 3 more 2x4's to finish it up.

I still need to brace the sawhorses for my reset mechanism to work correctly.

Looks functional, might have to do something similar at my local range!

Nice work.

I want to come down to play. That looks like fun. Lets see south a far piece and then east quite a bit and I'm here right?

Yeah. Then afterward, come North about 120 miles to visit me up in the mountains North of Asheville, NC. Then, its back West and North and you're home. :)

Come on down and over, but bring some boots because the plate rack will be set up in a cow pasture.

Clever! I'll bet you could attach a second rope, heading in the reverse direction, to the part you want stationary, make loop with the far end, and drive a stake into the ground to hold it against the pull of your reset rope?

Just a thought . . .

Great idea! Thanks!

I work in city government, I'm used to cow pastures.

When I come I'll make a big loop. Quite a few folks here I'd like to meet in person. I think.

In other words bring your 4 wheeler chair, or may tracked chair if it's muddy.

Melissa, if it was me shooting, I'd likely chew up those boards pretty fast. Be telling myself "don't hit the boards" and you know what happens next.

Wait, it's only 120 miles from Georgia to North Carolina? I might have to llok at a map.

Yeah, I'm going to see if I can find some 2" steel angle to put across the front. Or, I'll mount a couple of 2x4's in front of the main 2x4 to absorb some of the stray bullets.

I was born in Missouri. I like grits. Haven't had any in many years.

I have to chuckle... at myself. If you're like me you'll end up with something so stout you can't move it. Hope you can set it up and leave it.

LOL! I'm planning to leave the sawhorses in the cow pasture with a tarp over them and take the boards with the steel plates home with me. I was going to leave the whole thing, but as soon as I did, someone would find it and steal it or shoot it with a rifle.

Nice work Melissa, looks like fun!
Now you need to hang some gong's around the place
and put up some animal sillouhettes and you'll be just like Hickock45!

LOL! I would need a brain and trigger finger transplant before I was just like Hickock45. That guy can shoot!

I'm not too proficient at building things, so I got the dueling tree in my avatar from brownells for about $350 shipped after discounts. And I got mine before Hickock45 got his!

That tree looks like it would be fun and would probably hold up better than my plate rack. Too bad I couldn't find a steel plate rack for $350.

Uncle B id be a bit suspicious and do a check on statuses. That second vehicle in the garage might mean a thing or two. Or more correctly a thing and two!! Tool wall too (but knowing Melissa might be hers!). I'm no detective.

Cousin JFootin I was in your neck of the woods last year and probably gazed down on you from above. Highest point in NC. Might need to swing by your place next time to pick up all those items you "borrowed" back in the day.

Nice build Melissa5!

Naw, our relationship is built on pure trust. I remember her buying the truck awhile back. I think she's pretty handy with tools too. Not sure how much hands on building she did on her AR but it looks pretty darn nice.

Cousin Mikey, the highest point in NC is Mt. Mitchel, which is in my county quite a few miles from where I live. But depending on your flight path, you might have gazed down on me. I wondered why I felt like someone was looking sat me. :spider:

I pawned all that stuff before I moved up here from GA. Don't have much room in this little apartment.

Mount Mitchell was a blast and its nice to say I've been on the highest peak in the Eastern US if I remember rightly. Whitewater rafting near Hartford was fun too. And sneaking around where they filmed Legends of the Fall was nice too, plus the Appalachian Trail - lots of good stuff to do in your neck of the woods. Next time I'm through there ill have to stop by and say hi and verify the lawn shop story.

OK, cuz. I'll be looking for you with a smile and a wave, and a loaded shotgun if you don't drive on down the road. :D Just kidding! But that's the way it is with a lot of these hillbillies out in the hollers. You go driving by and see one by his mailbox, and he'll smile and wave at you. But just keep moving. He might be a moonshiner, or a pot grower, or a meth dealer, or an Oxycontin dealer, or just a Baptist. But they like their privacy. Actually, there are a lot of good people up here. A nice place to live.

My niece and her husband now own the historic Nu Wray Inn (http://www.nuwrayinn.com/) in Burnsville, my stomping ground. The old hanging sign out front says "Est 1833." It used to be a stage coach stop. They are running it as an upscale bed & breakfast. An ideal base for exploring the area. And Burnsville is a charming little township with colorful little shops and restaurants an easy stroll from the inn, which is located on the town square, which is surrounded by a one lane traffic circle with no traffic lights. (25 m.p.h. speed limit downtown. Nobody's in a hurry around here. :)) Come and stay awhile!

You got it, sugar!

I bought the AR already assembled but did add the sopmod stock, aimpoint h-1, LMT rear sight, TLR1-s light and pressure pad. Maybe I will build one from scratch in the future but it's way down on my list of things to do right now.

I found some steel angle and plating at Home Depot that might help protect the wood but will push the final price to around $250.
