Remember, not only did you contribute to Social Security but your employer did too. It totaled 15% of your income before taxes. If you averaged only $30K over your working life, that's close to $220,500.

If you calculate the future value of $4,500 per year (yours & your employer's contribution) at a simple 5% (less than what the govt. pays on the money that it borrows), after 49 years of working you'd have $892,919.98.

If you took out only 3% per year, you'd receive $26,787.60 per year and it would last better than 30 years (until you're 95 if you retire at age 65) and that's with no interest paid on that final amount on deposit! If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you'd have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month.

The folks in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madhoff ever had.

Entitlement my ass, I paid cash for my social security insurance!!!! Just because they borrowed the money, doesn't make my benefits some kind of charity or handout!!

Congressional benefits ---- free healthcare, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days, now that's welfare, and they have the nerve to call my social security retirement entitlements?

We're "broke" and can't help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans, Home less

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti , Chile , and Turkey . And now Pakistan ......home of bin Laden. Literally, BILLIONS of DOLLARS!!!

Our retired seniors living on a 'fixed income' receive no aid nor do they get any breaks while our government and religious organizations pour Hundreds of Billions of $$$$$$'s and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries!

They call Social Security and Medicare an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives and now when it’s time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did the government borrow from it in the first place? Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave 'US' the same support they give to other countries.

Sad isn't it?

Sorry that this didn't have more to do with guns, but if you're retired it's sure going to affect how many you can afford to buy or how much ammo you can afford.

The first time I openly suggested Social Security was a huge Ponzi scheme was in the midst of an earlier change in the law. Circa 1978. That was the point at which I just wrote it all off as a, well, Ponzi scheme that would collapse before I ever got there and planned around it. Guess I was just ahead of my time. Now getting benefits...heavily taxed of course, but a payout just the same...and I'm totally stunned.

I forgot to add, while doing research on who owns the Federal Goverments nearly $15 TRILLION of debt, Social Security owns a whopping 19% percent, over twice more than any other entity. Thats roughly $2,850,000,000, or 2 TRILLION, 850 BILLION some odd dollars. Thats around $930 for everyone one of the 307.007 million of people in the US as of June 2009. Who do you think the Feds will rob first when they start running out of money - their own citizens. They'll have no choice but to cut off Social Security, since they've robbed it blind. I depend on that money to get buy, when it's cut off I'm going to be in pretty bad shape, as are a number of others I know.
I sure hate to sound all gloom and doom these days, but this stuff keeps slapping me upside the head telling me to spread the word. If you're not somewhat prepared for at least a little disruption at the grocery store or walmart or the gas station, then life could be a little tough for you. Little things are ez to stock up on, like an extra bag of rice or beans, or some some extra salt and pepper, I'm sure the ladies would enjoy having some extra toilet paper on hand, LOL. Don't stock up on things that need refigeration or frozen goods as electricity might not be very dependable. Even if you have a generator, will we be able to get or afford gas? Canned meats, fruits and vegatables are all desirable to have. I like to buy extra ammo every paycheck too. A couple bricks of .22 are affordable, and are a lot better than nothing, and can put fresh meat on the table.

Perhaps one should NOT read this while handling a gun! I've been saying that for years along with trying to get people to understand how they are paying much, much more in taxes due to the pass along taxes embedded in everything you buy. Cain is the first one I heard say anything about that in public. And folks like Obama say they won't tax the little guy, just the big corporations as if they somehow don't pass on that cost to the consumers.

I have always complained that people in my generation (late 20's) are paying into social security that we will never receive. I am almost glad that atleast I know it is coming. I never thought about what would happen to those who are dependant on it will just stop receving it. If you are in that group, I wish you the best. Hopefully you have enough time to start planning now, before it runs out.

There's something wrong with those numbers. First off, Social Security (FICA) is 6.2% x 2 or 12.4%. The suggested total ignores the fact that the rate was not as high as 6.2% over all of the last 48 years, it ignores there was a cap, ie., the wage base which may have applied in a few years and limited your contribution, and assumes never a layoff in 48 years. The current rate seems higher because there is a Medicare contribution of 1.45%. Finally, that $892919 is off for two reasons. Your assuming $4500, which is wrong, AND you're putting it in annually and we don't get paid that way.

Still , all the points are true and make a strong argument for privatizing SS. The problem is that you have to live all 48 years. You must stay healthy enough to work. The stock market can't be in a severe downturn when you want to retire. Your pile of money may be shrunk 20-35% at just the wrong time.

We have been abused by our government when it comes to the way we treat SS and tax dollars in general.

The short, we're in real trouble. The good thing though if you can call it good is if we start on a fast downhill slide a lot of the world is going with us. We won't be alone. But it will still be bad and things will be A LOT different when it's all done.
