I have owned the pm9 and p9 in the past and both gins ran flawless without any issues at all even during the break in period. So obviously when it came time for me to look at the 40S&W I never looked any further than the PM40. Went down and bought one without any reservation and I am now in the 10 day waiting period and decided to read some reviews on the gun to boost my ego and WOW did I find nothing but problem after problem with FTF FTE broken followers broken mags and a bunch of posts about having to modify the mags by sanding the follower in different locations. I was shocked that Kahr would keep manufacturing a gun without addressing these issues. I like the 40 for self defense but am now thinking about putting it up for sale and getting a PM9. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd trade you my almost new PM9 for a PM40 any day, except I still have 1300 rounds of 9mm, and nothing else that shoots it. If I shoot, I like big holes.

Welcome to the forum Duncan! You have been affected the same way all of us were when we were new to the forum. As is true with any brand specific forum, you are going to see people posting with problems. For every one of those, there are HUNDREDS of people with flawless guns who don't ever come on the forum. You bought a quality gun. Follow the Proper Prep and Kahr Lube Chart stickies in the Kahr-Tech section before you go shoot it and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't sweat it. All manufacturers have people complaining about this or that. For example a lot of people cuss Ruger. I have a couple of revolvers and absolutely love them and had a Super Blackhawk in 44 mag that I kick myself for selling everytime I think about it. I almost bought a LC9 instead of a PM9 but the safety was a deal breaker for me on a defense piece.

I think that the a lot of the issues come down to simple things that can be done to avoid common break in troubles, I just got a PM9, followed all the info and it has ran flawless for my break in, I feel very good about my purchase.

a few things that was super important for me:

- Rack the slide, ALOT, I went over 500, actually did not rack the slide in a sense, I held the slide and moved the frame quickly in the same fashion as a rack, but this allowed me to do hundreds in a very quick manner.

- Clean the gun before you shoot it, mine had some gunk, not much did give a cleaning.

- Follow the lube chart, its a perfect way to keep the gun running smooth

- Break the mags down, my 7 rounder had the spring in backwards, this mag gives many people issues. I think a quick simple break down would solve a lot of issues for people.

- Dont shoot junk loads for your break in

If you just keep it simple you will be totally happy with the results!

Cheers!

Welcome to KahrTalk!

My PM9 had two issues out of the box. Both were easily fixed with help from folks here and parts from Kahr. You just never know. The only Kahr model I could not recommend - based on what I read here on KahrTalk - would be the P380. Your PM40 will likely be just fine.

I wouldn't worry about a PM40 at all. I have one and I bought it used. Love it. So much that I bought a CM9 as soon as they came out. Both have been great! You will be pleasantly surprised at how well you can shoot the PM40. For some reason, I can shoot tighter groups with the PM40 than I can with my CM9. No reason to worry about a PM40 at all, based on my one experience with a used (only 200 round before I bought it) gun, probably made 3 years ago.

Well, if you blew it then I'm right there with you. I purchased a pristine used PM40 DLC with night sights yesterday. It was on my "want" list and the price was outstanding as it came with 4 mags and a FIST holster. I'm really looking forward to getting it out to the range and seeing how it compares with the PM9. I think this will turn out well for us.

I'm lovin' my P40, but I am glad I didn't find this site until after I bought it. Otherwise I probably would have went another direction. Fortunately another Kahr owner and good friend that I trust very much pointed me towards Kahr for a carry pistol. :)

Welcome to the forum Duncan. I think you will find a wealth of info here as well as a great bunch of people. I just bought a PM 45 that had some issues, things that were not repairable with parts at my level, so it had to go back to Kahr. When it was returned I still had some problems but with everyones help the gun is up and running. Enjoy your new PM40 JL

I have a PM9 DLC and later bought a PM40 DLC. The only difference is the PM9 has XS Big Dots and the PM40 has the standard night sights.

Both are better shooters than I am. Personally prefer to carry the PM40 and get a bit tighter groups on the PM40. Recently added a Crimson Trace (very nice after sighting it in). Best carry gun ever in a CrossBreed Minituck or in the pocket in a Superfly. Half the time for IWB I use a Remora. All are excellent holsters. Carry an extra mag in a cloth sunglasses case in the opposite pocket.

I think you will find the PM40 an excellent gun IF you follow the break in instructions. I probably put close to a thousand cycles on the slide prior to firing a single round. A couple of hundred rounds with a couple of good cleanings and you have IMHO the best concealed carry gun around (because you will always carry it without it being a pain).

I also recommend the "AGRIPS" product.

I agree. I love my PM40. Using the proper prep and break in, I've not experienced an FTE, FTF, follower problem, mag problem, any problem of any kind. The only issue I had was with some casings fired from Glocks with my reloads. The FTF had nothing to do with the gun. It is a pleasure to shoot. There is no reason to get into the 9 vs 40 issue as they are two completely different birds. Hope you enjoy yours and have as good of luck with it as I have with mine. Prep, prep, prep.

Here again, I agree. AGRIPS and CTL make the PM40 a sweet heart for carry, dry fire practice and the range. I also recommend Remora no clip holster for IWB and pocket. I used to prefer pocket carry, but now carry IWB most of the time....except when I carry my wife's S&W Bodyguard380 on special occasions. The PM40 is the "sweetheart bulldog" for compact conceal carry power.

For a CCW does the 40 have enough extra advantage over the 9 to make it worth giving up one round in the mag? For just a little extra price would you take a 40 over the 9? Is the extra velocity and energy of the 40 over the 9 worth the extra recoil?

I'd been thinking about a new CM/PM9 but after looking at them closer I'm wondering if I should go for the 40? I have a Beretta .380 but would like something with a little more omph.

P.S. Must have gotten something in the wrong place, this was supposed to be a separate new thread, not wanting to hijack another members thread.

For CCW self defense, you will not be dissapointed in the PM40. It will do the job!
