Like all of us, I want my bedside piece to be easily accessible if/when I need it. No fumbling around in the middle of the night, trying to work locks open or to search for my gun in a drawer. Space between my bed and treadmill (aka, the clothes rack) does not allow for a standard-sized nightstand, so I've designed an extremely functional bedside holster for my PM9, Ruger SP101, or any other pistol I may acquire in the future. Counting the travel time to an Office Depot and a Walmart, the project took less time to complete than it will to finish this post with pictures. It also cost a whopping $15 (+ tax).
Take a look at the pictures below and I'll walk you through the procedure in case you want to build one, too.
Picture #1 shows the parts of the my Homemade Budget Bedside Holster:
1. A plastic document holder from Office Depot ($8)
2. A Crossman holster for a generic airsoft pistol from Walmart ($7)
3. Some industrial strength velcro I had in my garage (only 5-6 inches)
Picture #2 shows the Crossman holster out of the package. (Sorry for the low quality pic.) Notice the velcro flap on the back of the holster that serves as a belt strap, the pocket in the front for a magazine, and various straps (which I will remove later since the holster will be stationery).
Picture #3 shows two pieces of velcro in place, making sure the correct side of the velcro would attach to the holster and hold it in place. Next, I cut off all the unnecessary straps and removed the snap strap to clean up the holster and make retrieval easier.
Picture #4 shows the holster without the extra straps, attached to the sign holder, and comfortably nesting my loaded PM9 with an extra magazine filled with hollow points. It's time to put this puppy to bed.
Picture #5 is the finished bedside holster slid between the mattress and box springs, the new night-time home for my PM9. (Don't tell my wife I posted a picture of our unmade bed on the internet! If you do, I'll need to move my new holster set-up to the couch! The holster is completely concealed by the comforter/bedspread.)
My Ruger SP101 fits nicely and looks great in this holster as well. In fact, any full sized pistol would fit since the bottom of the holster is open to allow for larger and longer barrels.
I felt so proud of my project that I celebrated by purchasing a box of 100 WWB on sale at Walmart for $20.97. Hey, that's about $5 more than I spent on this Budget Bedside Holster!

For those who have bed designs without a box spring, check out this magnet "holster" for under $12 shipped. I have Danish furniture which has a teak box type frame with sides that are about 8-10 inches tall and slats to support a firm king mattress. There is no way to slide a document holder under the matress. I can screw this magnet holster into the side. Any size & weight gun will be supported. Two "holsters" support a carbine or shotgun.

Nice work Sierra. I just leave my PM45 in the ankle holster on my leg. Don't even know its there. Course I don't even know my ankle is there either. Saves having to strap it on in the AM.
YMMV.

Nice. A lot cheaper than the $20 one on the Kahr website.
Edit: Nice work Sierra! :)

Great job on the bedside holster, especially on a budget! I think that will work well for you. Speaking of ankle holsters, uncle B, have you found something that works well for your PM45 with CT attached? I'm thinking an ankle holster might be on my naughty/nice list...although for me it'd be PM9 with CT.

Yep! Saw that last night and rounded up some magnets, but I was concerned about the magnets that I had would scratch my slide. In fact, this setup was what started my creative (redneck) juices flowing, which led up to my current design (which, I'm sure, is not original). Great idea!

I got mine from the Kahr shop. I believe its a Gould and Gouldrich? It's very similar to the Galco. Sheep skin under the gun for those who can feel their ankles. Neoprene or skin diver suit material that works real well. Only thing I'd change is it hooks up from front to back where the Galco is back to front so it was easier to put on. It's not a huge issue. It works real well. A nice solid thumbbreak that works just as it should.
I know they make them for the PM9, I wasn't sure on the website if the 45 was available but alas it was. I was happy.

For a change, I wore the Remora ankle holster with my PM9 today. Because I have meatless ankles, I have to wear an athletic sweat band around my ankle and under my sock to keep the barrel from bruising my bone. Works fine, but I've never slept in an ankle holster, Bawanna! I'd be afraid one of my toes from the other foot would pull the trigger (ha!).

I wake up with my legs all crossed up and in knots. The top half rolls and toss's and turns and the bottom just follows along or not.
I have boney ankles too. I call it chicken legs, starved chicken legs. Always had em even when I was an active walking animal carpenter.
I'll have to take a picture of my ankle rig. I'll be sure to post a warning so Melissa and TD2K and Jdlott don't faint. Manly chicken legs are almost as inspiring as a good mustache.

I wear custom molded braces on my lower legs and feet. Can't walk at all without them. I sleep with them and my shoes on so I can get up and drain my tank, which happens several times a night. I have bony knees and sleep on my side, so I put a pillow between my knees and lower legs. Keeps me comfortable. But I don't toss and turn in my sleep. So, my night wear is my day wear without a shirt, with my jeans pockets emptied out, and with a sweat shirt on over my T-shirt on cold nights. And I lay on top of the bed, not under a sheet. One does what one has to do to cope with what life dishes out (or plops on them!:p).

There is a plastic covering to avoid metal to metal contact. If you make your own, shrink some plastic around it with heat

JFootin, thanks for sharing about your unique circumstances. At this time of year when we should all be thankful, your story makes me most thankful, indeed. You're a blessing, my friend.
TriggerMan, I still make look into the pre-made magnet setup to provide even more versatility around the house. You have some great ideas....keep them coming!

I've always been skeptical and concerned about magnetizing my gun with magnetic holders. Maybe it's not a viable concern.
I know I absolutely hate magnetic screw drivers. One of my Brownells bit holders is magnetic and I rarely use it. There are times it's a nice feature but usually it just aggravates the heck out of me.

Hope you don't get "restless leg syndrome". You could shoot your big toe off
while twitching in your sleep.

You are very welcome! It's a step above duct tape, but it works great for me!
