View Full Version : Wisconsin CCW Permit time...

Wisconsin adopted regulations for concealed carry starting November 1, 2011. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to mail in my application until November 3rd and it made a big difference in turnaround time for processing by the WI DOJ.
My CCW license finally arrived in today’s mail with my number of 19,XXX.
Here’s a recap of some processing times that I’ve pick up on from this forum:
Date Date Days to
Name Sent Rec’d Process
Hognutz 11/01/11 11/09/11 8
Viper 11/02/11 11/18/11 16
Micha2u 11/03/11 12/07/11 34
I’ve heard that applications were around 50,000 for November and see that the CCW training classes are still being held with regularity in my area of NE Wisconsin. More and more people seem to be jumping on board with concealed carry in Wisconsin.
It’s good to be able to join most of the rest of the country in being able to defend ourselves outside of our houses. Now that the paperwork is in order, the attachment is a picture of what I will be carrying.

are they going to reciprocarte with states that issue ccw permits and now will honor wisconsin ccw holders. example Indiana honors all states with ccw where as some states that have ccw do not honor Indiana holders. I think that is bull sheet:der:

In Michigan, Macomb County, mine took from Feb 20 to May 20th. The last two weeks were because I couln't get scheduled for the Gun Board. We have been a "Shall Issue" State for 9 years. Too many applicants.
I just sold my PM9 to a Wisc. member on KahrTalk. Gonna carry 1911s or ocassionally a Sig P238 380

thats whatnice about our Indiana ccw permitting. One can opt for a 4 year permit or opt for a life time permit. One time precessing, finger printing, background check etc and then $100 and u get a lifetime permit. super idea, bug money maker for the state also.
best thing since peanut butter!!

I wish we had a lifetime option in Georgia. I have to renew every five years, and unless they changed the process [the legislature was talking about it] renewing is just like getting a new permit.

Do you need to own property there or will they issue Non-Resident for the cash..I mean fee? Will a bunch of other States then reciprocate with Utah?

They will issue to out of state residents but they require photo and finger prints, and will last for 5 years. You also have to have taken a 6 hour class taught by a Utah certified person.

As a matter of fact I applied for a Utah CCW yesterday. I had to wait until I had my Wisconsin CCW to send along with the application as they require that as part of their CCW approval process.
Utah is fairly inexpensive ($65 for non-resident) and is accepted by a lot of other states including our neighboring state of Minnesota where a Wisconsin CCW is not recognized.

So.. If Wi. recognizes these states, that doesn't mean that they recognize ours? I thought that there was reciprocity between these? Can someone explain the madness....Thanks...Mike

I hope it turns out you wasted your time and money getting your CCW... Meaning you live a full and happy life never having to use your carry gun.
Personally I'd like every good citizen to at least seriously consider the pros and cons of concealed carry. I feel we'd have even more good citizens carrying if they did so.

I really don't get the idea that there is not reciprocity amongst all states that allow concealed carry. 49 states allow you to carry, but not between some of them. So you go on a trip armed, until you reach the border, then case the gun, until the next border, etc. What ever happened to the ''United'' States of America. Minus Illinois, of course...Just venting..I'm better now..Mike

I agree with your sentiment on this.
I also have homeowner's insurance, auto insurance, liability insurance, fire extinguishers and an electrical generator that I hope to never use either.
The only difference with my concealed carry weapon is that I can enjoy shooting it for its own sake as well as providing me with a self-defense weapon.

there is a bill in the works that should make all state reciprocate. If only damn IL got on board. Good thing WI is ok with my UT license.

H.R. 822—the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011” passed the House of Representatives last week. This still needs to get passed in the Senate (not an easy task) and signed by the White House (good luck).
I sure wish hope that they can find something to tack this onto so it goes through. It would be great of states accepted a CCW permit from other states just as they currently accept a drivers license.

Kansas recognizes states who have the same or tougher requirements to get their CC permit as Kansas, they don't recognize states that have lesser requirements than we do. It's not all that tough, an 8 hour class and a shooting demo of being able to put 17 or 18 shots out of 25 into a small old fashioned milk jug looking target about the same size as the small sillouhette targets. Shooting from 3, 5, and 7 yards I believe. 3 yards is one hand only while the others are two handed hold if you want. I believe any type of handgun is acceptable, .22 included.
Sorry Jocko, you can't CC in Kansas.

Given that one needs a permit at all, I really like the concept of that lifetime thing. (Which hopefully would be valid for a long time.)

Utah cashed my check November 22, so I'm going to have to wait a while. Their "60 days" is BUSINESS days, I believe. That's 12 FULL 5-day weeks - add the days taken as holidays on to the end of the 12 weeks.

Before I sent in my application to Utah I had to call the person in charge of their program to clarify something. I was told that the current lead time is 45 days so hopefully we will get them a little bit sooner.
Patience...I wish I had more of it.

Congratulations on getting your Utah CCW!
I wasn't thinking and waited until after November 1st to apply for Utah which meant that I needed to send them a copy of my Wisconsin CCW (which I just got last week). That delayed things for me but you did it a smarter, quicker way by applying before Wisconsin's CCW took effect.

We're planning a trip to The Dells next year with some family, watched with great pleasure as Wisconsin joined the free world, or as free as possible given the boobs running things in DC ... glad I won't have to leave my PM9 behind when we hit the road ...

I knew that, Ohio is the same way. i think both states figure we don't do enough before we issue ccw permits. Now good ol Indiana recognizes any states ccw permitj. I would bet also that Wisconsin ccw permit will be based upon something like kansas and Ohio's also, so probably no dice in wisconsin either

Love to bring the bike, Cougar ... sadly, you haven't watched my wife pack for a vacation ... usually have to rent a giant SUV to get all her stuff loaded; my duffle bag usually gets tied to the roof ... and it's just the two of us ... but looking forward to the trip anyhow, maybe I'll rent a Harley once we get there ...
