New forum member with a new CW9. I just finished my 200 round break in and want to start testing carry ammo. Those of you who carry a CW9 for protection, what brand and weight ammo do you depend on. Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome.. The ammo I carry in my CW9 is the 147gr+P HST, or 124+P gold dots. Both shoot great.

Welcome to KahrTalk!
Today you'd be hard pressed to pick a really bad 9mm SD ammo. Lots of good stuff on the shelves. 124 +P, particularly Gold Dots, seems to be very popular in carry nines that will handle them. Your choice must feed reliably through your gun.

Here is a list of Self Defense ammo compiled by a leading shooting magazine from their independent tests. All scored in the top percentage for shorter barrel guns. Not tested in that test but I'd add Hornady Critical Defense and Hornady TAP. Look out for due on the market soon, Hornady Critical Duty. Personally, it is the Ranger T Series 124gr +P in all my 9mm self defense guns.

Markis,
can you tag that article I would like to read it. Personally, for some reason, guess 'cause I like Ford over Chevy, I have never been a fan of Winchester ammo.
Real curious about using 147 gr. in my PM9 or CW9. Always thought lighter was better in shorter barrel pistols. JDK

They'll shoot the 147 gr just fine. What WON'T work as well is some low powered 115 gr target ammo. I think Kimber says to only use premium high power SD ammo in their Solo, and many other manufacturers say the same concerning their sub-compact pistols. O'Dell just discovered that with a used Detonics mini that he bought.
Try some 147 gr. You might like it! :)

Here is where the list came from.

I studied defense ammo to death and concluded Federal HST +P 147gn to be the best. Main factors are consistent full expansion and excellent penetration through clothing. The 147gn weight helps if it hits bone. There isn't a one absolute defense round but this is a good one and I prefer it over the others.

Thanks Mr S. I do remember reading the article now. Just didn't remember the table.
I will have to try some 147 gr ammo, I know I have some here somewhere . . . .

Don't have a CM9, but I like Hydra-Shoks in my LC9.

any of these noted rounds wil ldo the job for you. #1 MUST BE TOTAL RELIABILITY. Other than that ur not gonna go wrong with any of the above rounds metioned. fIND WHAT WORKS GREAT, FIND WHAT IS AVAILALBE LOCALLY, FIND WHAT YOUCAN AFFORD TO PAY.
then just shoot it like u stole it..

That's me as well, except the non-+P 147gr HST. The +P is not on the list, and even if it were, I don't see a need to shoot +P in the heavier grained 147 cartridge. I like both HST and 124 gr +P GDHP.
I think the HST may be overall better SD round FOR ME. Depends on feeding and how well and accurate you can shoot it and how comfortable you feel shooting it.
Since I now have a CT LG-437 on my CW9, I'll shoot both again and reassess. It will probably boil down to feed reliability and ability to freely do double-taps because it's pretty hard to miss with a laser.
I also have a bias in favor of the HST because I have more of them to practice with, it's supposedly the carry round for the local police, and I don't want to buy additional Speer 124gr +P GDHP, or HST. :)

HST's work for me in my CW9.

Glad to hear that. I haven't shot either HST or GD for quite some time (a year) and I seem to recall that, as always, GD shot to point of aim pretty well in my CW9-HST seemed a bit more to handle, but that is just my gut recollection.
Ballistically, I think the 147 HST wins out over the 124+P GD, cost-wise HST wins out, and as I said, my local police agency apparently has it as their duty round. So, we shall see...I plan to go to the range some time this weekend.

I know this thread is a couple years old at this point, but . . .
Like the OP I just finished my break-in on the CW9. My LGS recommended Liberty Ultra Defense USM4 9mm . . . . anybody familiar with this round and more specifically any familiarity with this round in the CW9?
Much appreciated.

From the test reports I've read, it's just another over-hyped exotic ammo like the Glaser Safety Slug or MagSafe w/violent expansion but insufficient penetration.
I used to carry Winchester PDX-1 147's in my Kahrs but recently switched to Hornady's 135gr Critical Duty. I believe in sufficient penetration over expansion and the Critical Duty sacrifices a little expansion to provide 15" of gel penetration from a 3" bbl (FBI's suggested range is 12"-18") w/less recoil than the 147's.

Personally I would stay away from rounds like the Liberty Ultra Defense and stick with rounds with a proven record in law enforcement and defense shootings - any of the modern rounds listed earlier in this thread would be a good choice.
I'm currently carrying Federal 124gr +P HST. Functions and shoots well in my CW9, and I was able to acquire a quantity of it at a reasonable price. Whatever round you choose, first priority has to be reliable functioning in your individual pistol.
Chuck
I have shot reliably and stock Speer Gold Dots, Hornady Critical Duty and Remington Golden Sabers for my 9mm's. Found deals for each over a period of time and will continue to look into any of the others on the list (plus Critical Defense which the Ms and I carry in our .380's) as deals pop up.

best carry ammo is one that goes b ang every time. Just sayin
best carry ammo is one that goes b ang every time...
Yeah, you can make yourself crazy if you think it REALLY matters. But then again, if it's my coin, I at least want to spend it on a brand/type that has a good reputation. And when you're out of defensive ammo you'll be shooting the range stuff. It goes bang, too.
