View Full Version : PM9 Premature Slide Lock Back

As posted earlier, my PM9 has issues shooting 124gr.Gold Dots. The slide locks back after ejecting the fired round. Probably 5% of the time. Only the Gold Dots. I have 330+ rounds of misc. FMJ that ran flawlessly. driving me crazy..
I thought perhaps I was hitting the slide stop with my thumb, but that is definitely not the case. It is not a grip issue..I made sure that my grip was strong and low, and purposely kept my thumb away from the lock.
I am going to try a few different types of ammo. Any suggestions on the ammo type to try?
Any thoughts, in general would be appreciated...Thanks Mike

My PM9 absolutely loves Winchester PDX1 Bonded (124, 147, doesn't matter), feeds like butter.
Mine also has an issue with Gold Dot, hand racking is virtually impossible with it.

very strange for GD ammo to cause that. You might wantto venture over to the kahr tech section and hit on the propper prepping of ur new kahr it will tell you things to look for that is causing pre mature slide lock.
Only a few things can cause it ajdI won't go into details as the thread covers it well.
How about trying that same ammo shooting it left handed to, seeif u can duplicate that issue.. sure sounds like an ammo thing but very strange and it has to be a solveable thing to..
Mike-
You can try mine sometime to see if you're the issue or the gun is...

I've shot (and carried) both Black Hills 124 +P and 115 EXP out of my PM9 without issue. For sure more snot to the 124 +Ps judging from how far the brass is thrown yet felt recoil feels about the same to my senses.

I was shooting +p in the Gold Dots. 70 rounds today, multiple lockbacks. Only with the GD's. Went and picked up some Federal LE Tactical 124 to try next.
I am including a link from the Kel-Tek site that I found when I googled my problem. See what y'all think..I called Kahr, and Richard told me that he has never heard of the problem, but he has only been there for 5 months..Told me not to grind down the slide stop as suggested in the link. But, it looks like this guy has the same issues as I do..Thanks, Mike

have u read my PM to you. u need to eliminate the possables of the issue, just shooting another brand is not really eliminating what the cause it. Your kahr will shoot Gold dots with ease, so something/someone is causing it.
How can we give u an opinion until we know what you have found out. Modifying the slide stop as I told u is a common thing with 1911 owners and some kahr owners have fixed their issue by doing this also. but FIRST u have to determine if that is the issue. I think ur putting the kart way before the horse here, I would not mess with calling kahr until u do some testng yourself. They can't help u, until u tell them DEFINITELY "this is what is happening".

Upon further review, it is indeed the slide stop that is the root of my problems. I put it throught the test as shown in the set-up thread. The Gold Dot only has a couple of thousanths of clearance. If the shell slides ahead at all, it hits the slide stop, because the GD's have bigger shoulders, so to speak. They are not as streamlined as a Win. WB. FMJ, therefore they hit when the FMJ's are not even close.
If Kahr will replace the slide lock, are they smaller and/or less obtrusive? Or will I get the same part back? I am convinced that is the problem. Thank God for my nephew with good eyes..

I've got a post on that KTOG thread stating that I had to do the same to my then new PM9. Back then there were a number of us who successfully did the mod but I don't recall the issue just happening with Gold Dots.

tell kahr (jAY OR EION) EXACTLY WHAT YOU TOLD US HERE. They will send u a new slide stop lever. do this same test with the other defense ammo u just boght, no need to shoot it if it is not going to clear either. Your slide stop lever is out of spec just enough to be causing this. It is correctable but like I told you, IO would not do the filing part until they say yes we will send u a new slide stop lever. Then do the mod, at the worst u can ruin what is really a worthless slide stop lever kand at the best u can fix this clearance yourself and have a good back up slide stop if ever needed. It is not rocket science to do this mod, but thatis ur choice to make also. A new side stop should take care of ur issue..

Could interference by the slide stop also cause nose-dive jams? I am not having premature slide-lock but have experienced multiple nost dive only with Gold Dot 124 gr. I sanded the followers (they were catching on the magazine latch) as per Jocko's suggestion but the nose-dives continue.

I have not had any nose dives at all. In fact my gun doesn't jam. It simply locks open after a round is fired. Usually the second or third, but not always. Had the first round do it once.

I called Kahr this morning and talked to Ian. He asked that I send the gun back to Kahr so the gunsmith can look at it. He never offered to send me another slide stop. So I took him up on the deal. I guess we will have to wait and see how it shakes out..Mike
