Darn, I feel obligated to argue that the Python has always been cool (and I am not that big a fan of Colt double action revolvers). They were extremely popular (almost mandatory) with the CHP motor officers I knew in the mid 70's.
That vent ribbed barrel has been spliced unto quite a few S&W frames of the years (
Smolt or
Smython) plus some Ruger frames as well (
Cougar). Early on the Cougar was done with mostly Security Six frames, but I see that Bowen Classic Arms has done some on Red Hawk and GP100 frames:
