AMC made ok cars for the money. My 73 Gremlin was a great car. 258 ci. 6 banger with a 3 speed. 11.9 track times and over 25 mi. to the gallon. Comfy bucket seats and handled well for what it was. I had a head on collision at 55 mph and it saved my life.........................

My dad was considering buying a new 71 Pontiac Firebird with a 400 CI 4bbl 4spd.
Then he realized I was about to get my driver's license and bought a Pinto!

AMC's had to be one of the worst cars made....they mostly were mutt's made up of all types of parts. Wiper motors from one company and mid year from another company, etc. I remember when the Pacers came, out a total POS. Valve covers did not use gasket just a bead of RTV [early version rtv that did not work very well], they leaked like a sieve. The doors were so big hinges broke regularly, gas tanks had a valley [ indentation to fit car] that trapped rain etc. and caused tanks to rust out on top. Steering racks leaked fluid. I worked at AMC dealer back then in the service department. AMC was internally known as All Most a Car= AMC.​ Getting parts to service them regularly was challenging due to constant mid year vendor changes and parts would come in wrong. At least we also had Jeeps which were not as bad. The nightmare continued when AMC took on Renaults.....18i's and LeCars were horrible.

Well I had a '69 Javelin SST that is still my all-time favorite car. And I've had dozens. Thing is, the time of your life when you own certain things matters a lot. Mine was Big Bad Blue. Bought it in '76 I think with about 30K on the clock. It had it's problems and I eventually sold it. But I wish I still had it. But you're right about it being a mutt. Ford block and pistons. Desoto rear hubs (which were splined and prone to stripping). And a mixture of many other manufature's parts for sure. I've pretty much been a Chevy guy all my life, but one thing I appreciated about my Javelin was that the distributor was in the front of the block. Like a Ford.

Distributor in the front was always a big plus to me too. Trying to make adjustments on the Chevy's was a challenge. Been a long time since I been under a hood for anything other than checking the dip stick and not much of that even.

440's and Hemi's had distributor in front! So did my 413 in my Chrysler 300.

I had a 60 Ford F100 pickup with a 1 bbl 223 CI strait six.
Three on the tree with power nothing LOL!
I had to get the truck moving just to turn the steering wheel!
Used to pop the hood, climb inside and sit on the wheel well to wrench on it.
It was tall enough to get underneath without jacking it up!
Not too hard to work on ...
