Same here, when I visited my grandparents in the summer. I’d save up money to take with me, and buy a box or two of 100-round .22LR Winchester.

My cousin and I would leave the house, each with a rifle, with the understanding to be home in time to be cleaned up for supper. The other implied expectation was that we wouldn’t do anything stupid. We didn’t. But, we shot a lot of pecans. When you are aiming at a pecan, you don’t have much wiggle room for error. And being 12 and buying your own ammo, we didn’t have much patience for missed shots. Fond memories.

For me it was Remington, the Western Auto would run specials, 2 boxes for $1.00. Back in those days, I usually shot my grandma's Remington single shot bolt action, circa 1930's. Heavy, but very accurate.
My grandma, had a Pecan grove, and she would call me over to shoot crows and squirrels. She gave you two bullets to start, and you got one more bullet for each varmint killed. We ate the squirrels, but the crows were left where they fell. Grandma had this great squirrel dumpling recipe.

Wish I had that old bolt action today, not sure which relative got it on her passing.

Never had a 22 as a kid but had a single shot 12 gage. We used to shoot crows at Kennedy's gravel pit [back in Massachusetts, yes those Kennedy's].
The crows would taunt and dive bomb us between shots. They would figure out our range and fly just outside it. Next they would dive bomb us when re-loading.

Shot a lot of those myself out of a Rem bolt action. Squirrel hunting and we had a bullet trap in the basement.

Bet they never invited Dick Cheney out to the old gravel pit to shoot!
